The Department of Justice’s criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is merely “temporarily paused,” a pair of Democratic senators said in a letter sent to the department Friday and obtained first by CNBC. “Your announcement leaves the door wide open for you to relaunch the criminal probe against Chair Powell — or future baseless investigations into Powell or other Fed Governors and a future Fed Chair — should it once again become politically expedient for you to do so,” Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said in the letter addressed to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro. Pirro said in a statement Friday that the Fed’s inspector general had been asked to investigate cost overruns on an ongoing renovation project. Pirro didn’t specify who had made the request. That could be a challenge for Warsh as he seeks to overcome a legacy of ethics scandals under the current chair, Jerome Powell. Warsh in filings to the Senate Tuesday disclosed owning assets worth roughly $135 million to $226 million. That is in addition to what Forbes estimates as a $1.9 billion fortune held by his wife, Jane Lauder, granddaughter of the cosmetics founder Estée Lauder. But Warsh’s disclosures don’t reveal everything about his wealth. For one, the forms ask only for reporting values in broad ranges, making precise calculations of his wealth impossible. In a bipartisan team-up, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Republican Sen. Josh Hawley are demanding more transparency regarding the energy use of data centers.  The pair sent a letter to the Energy Information Administration on Thursday, urging the EIA to “establish a mandatory annual reporting requirement for data centers.” Wired reported the news earlier.  Data centers have become a major topic of debate, as tech giants like Amazon Web Services, Google, Meta and Microsoft continue to buy massive amounts of land to house artificial intelligence data centers. While some landowners are taking the payouts, others — like a Kentucky woman and her mother, who turned down $26 million to sell their land — are holding out because of their opposition to data centers. The interested buyer in Kentucky remains anonymous, but the landowner told WLKY they were described as a “major artificial intelligence company.” Not only do data centers need large plots of land for their infrastructure, but they also require substantial water and electricity to operate. WASHINGTON — The Senate passed a bill Thursday aimed at boosting the supply of housing and bringing down prices, marking a rare bipartisan breakthrough on a major issue. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, written by Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., won 89 votes. Ten senators voted against it. Scott is the chairman of the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and Warren is the ranking member. The 303-page legislation creates a series of grants and pilot programs for housing construction, while revising federal definitions to encourage more housing units and prevent Wall Street from buying up tons of single-family homes. “Dear Me” is the name of the original song for which the legendary songwriter Diane Warren is Oscar-nominated this year — but it’s also what she says she thought, with a little bit of exasperation, when she sat down to record the medley, posted below, of all 17 songs for which she’s been nominated over the course of her career, as that is quite a lot of tunes to have written and to have to remember! The tune, which Warren wrote for and is featured in Bess Kargman’s documentary Diane Warren: Relentless, extends the songwriter’s undesirable records for most noms in that Oscar category without a win and most noms for a woman in any Oscar category without a win.
