Guys Are Wearing Slutty Little Reading Glasses Now

Jack Harlow at the New York premiere of Marty Supreme. John Nacion/Getty Images In a recent viral Saturday Night Live segment, cast member Ben Marshall impersonated Harlow at the Weekend Update desk, looking the part by donning rimless shades and a slightly askew Kangol cap, two accessories the Kentucky rapper has taken to wearing in recent months. Among the many discussions drawn by Harlow’s attire and affect, especially regarding his latest album, Monica, one that has bubbled to the surface—and was referenced on SNL—was a comment he made on an episode of the New York Times podcast Popcast. “I got Blacker,” said Harlow, who is white. That quote and his recent schtick of wearing Cartier reading glasses—a style staple of ’90s and early-aughts hip-hop—has raised eyebrows. As seen back then on the likes of Tupac Shakur, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Master P, and LL Cool J, such readers looked indisputably suave and provocative; on those attempting to syphon that swagger with little claim to it, the style choice can come off a little contrived. Costume-y. But, …

This Clever Bike Bell Can Even Be Heard by People Wearing Noise-Canceling Headphones

The unique Škoda DuoBell bicycle bell is a classic example of a completely analog solution to a problem caused by digital innovation. Its ringing sound bypasses the noise-canceling capabilities of modern headphones, which often isolate the wearer from outside noises all too well. People with headphones using active noise cancellation are often left in a perceptive bubble where they fail to react—or simply react too late—to imminent dangers on streets and sidewalks they can’t hear coming. The DuoBell’s mission is precisely to make itself heard even beyond the latest-generation barrier filters. Ring Bling To design the DuoBell’s ANC-defeating capabilities, researchers from the Czech brand—which coincidentally enough made its commercial debut in 1895 with a bicycle—worked closely with researchers at the University of Salford in the United Kingdom to verify whether there was a way to overcome active noise cancellation. ANC is now present in the vast majority of headphones and earphones, including low-cost models. It’s also a feature of software programs; it’s the tech that keeps your dog’s incessant barking from showing up in your …

‘I couldn’t see, breathe or sing. I blacked out twice’: why are so many metal bands wearing masks? | Metal

When US avant garde metal band Imperial Triumphant decided that their image needed a shake-up in 2015, they considered putting on corpse paint, the ghastly makeup popularised by 90s black metal. But, their singer/guitarist Zachary Ezrin says, they then realised how much effort it would take – and how uncool the post-gig rituals would feel: “You just rocked a show, and now you have to sit backstage and wipe off your makeup.” (Perish the thought of being the average female pop star.) They instead chose to wear striking gold masks modelled after 1920s art deco architecture, though these brought their own problems when they got lost in transit. “We had to do one show where Steve [Blanco, bass] was wearing a new mask that we put together from parts. We went to some Hungarian costume shop and just started grabbing stuff and piecing it together.” Or as Alpha, the masked and nameless frontman of Portuguese black metal band Gaerea says, “When you start to sweat, you can’t see shit, or breathe, or sing” if you’re …

Millennials Are Mourning After Seeing The Brunch Prom Dresses Gen Zers Are Wearing On The Once-Glamorous Night

Millennials Are Mourning After Seeing The Brunch Prom Dresses Gen Zers Are Wearing On The Once-Glamorous Night

Many millennials are mourning the prom dress styles they wore back in the day after seeing the “brunch dresses” Gen Z is opting for these days. When most adults think back on their prom nights, there’s a very specific image that comes to mind. A dimly lit room full of rented tuxedos and, of course, shimmering, floor-length gowns is what’s expected. Each generation has its own unique trends, and social media has been causing them to cycle through at an even faster speed than before. Some things, like a prom dress, feel classic, though. Is there really a need to change it up? According to Gen Z, there is. Gen Zers are wearing what disappointed millennials have dubbed ‘brunch dresses’ to prom. The idea of the prom dress being a unique, easily recognizable look has changed a lot. One millennial, Molly Walker, shared how happy she was to have gone to prom before this shift on TikTok. “Thank God ‘brunch’ prom dresses weren’t trending in 2019,” she said. According to a report from The Atlantic, …

How 3 GQ Editors Are Wearing Acne Studios This Spring

How 3 GQ Editors Are Wearing Acne Studios This Spring

For the last three decades, Acne Studios has occupied a rarified space in menswear, a growing cranny where restraint meets right-now cool. Since its inception 30 years ago in Stockholm, the reliable fashion-crowd favorite has won over countless diehards, who flock to the Swedish label for its kooky riffs on the classics and consistently excellent jeans. So in this installment of How We Wear It, we tapped three GQ editors to put their own spin on the brand’s latest assortment, a quasi-wardrobe brimming with tongue-in-cheek designs rendered in exacting silhouettes and left-field fabrics—plus a heap of top-shelf denim. Here’s how they’re wearing it. Samuel Hine, Global Fashion Correspondent GQ GQ Acne Studios turns 30 this year. What most people might not know is that the Stockholm-based label was actually launched back in 1996 as a multidisciplinary creative studio-slash-advertising agency, not a fashion brand. And then founder Jonny Johansson had the bright idea to make 100 pairs of raw denim jeans to give away as gifts. They caught on, and all of a sudden Acne was …

Horror’s favorite formula is wearing thin

Horror’s favorite formula is wearing thin

Pop quiz: What do you get when you mix the helpless dread of “Rosemary’s Baby,” ’80s-era satanic panic, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” winning an Oscar for best editing, and the ever-growing economic disparity between the richest 1% and the working class? The answer is just about any recent horror movie you can think of — and the one playing in the next theater over, too. That may sound like an exaggeration, but if you head to the multiplex this week, you can catch a double-feature of “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” and “They Will Kill You,” two films so remarkably similar in tone, style and theme that they read like parodies of each other. Their formulas are simple: A woman unwittingly finds herself in an isolated environment filled with satanist cult members who want to kill her to fulfill a Faustian blood pact. She must escape their clutches — the fate of the world might even depend on it — but she can only do it with the power of winking humor …

Luxury watch thief caught after wearing bright neon T-shirt in chip shop | UK News

A bungling watch thief who was caught after he was spotted by police wearing a distinctive bright neon T-shirt while eating in a chip shop has been jailed. James Wall stole Gucci and Cartier watches, a diamond ring and foreign currency during a burglary at a home in Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, at around 5.45pm on 13 December, Kent Police said. Wall, of Beverston Gardens in Bristol, Somerset, pleaded guilty to burglary at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to two years’ in prison. Police were called when he verbally abused a witness who challenged his reason for being in the area, the force said. The 20-year-old was driven away from the scene in a silver Vauxhall Insignia, but patrols spotted the car within an hour. The vehicle was seen reaching speeds of almost 100mph along the hard shoulder before it was brought to a halt near a slip road on the A2 near Wilmington, where the driver had attempted to travel the wrong way on the carriageway, police said.
