Western media is blowing Royal Enfield’s electric motorcycle launch

Western media is blowing Royal Enfield’s electric motorcycle launch

There’s a strange pattern emerging in Western coverage of Royal Enfield’s upcoming electric motorcycle, the Flying Flea C6. And if you’ve been following the story closely, it’s getting harder to ignore. First, it was the range claims. When Royal Enfield finally dropped the full specs last week, I seemed to be one of the only voices raising an eyebrow at what looked like an extremely optimistic range figure for such a small, lightweight urban electric motorcycle. And I shouldn’t have been the only one, since it was simply a matter of basic math and a bare minimum of experience with similar bikes that could have told anyone that Royal Enfield’s range ratings were twice as high as they should have been for real-world operation. Yet much of the Western motorcycle media largely repeated the claims without much scrutiny. Now we’re seeing the same thing happen again, this time with the revealing of the bike’s sticker price and claims of ‘astonishing’ pricing. Avalanche Beat the Blues 3-1 to Clinch Central Division and Top Seed in the Western Conference

Avalanche Beat the Blues 3-1 to Clinch Central Division and Top Seed in the Western Conference

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Valeri Nichushkin scored twice and Colorado Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Tuesday night to clinch the Central Division and the top seed in the Western Conference. It is the third time in five seasons, and first since 2023, that the Avalanche finished as the top team in the conference. Martin Necas also scored and Scott Wedgewood made 18 saves for Colorado, which has earned points in eight of its last 11 games. Wedgewood was shaken up midway through the third period after Philip Broberg made contact with him after being tripped by Sam Malinski. Wedgewood was driven awkwardly into the post and stayed down for several minutes, but remained in the game. Robert Thomas scored and Joel Hofer made 34 saves for the Blues, whose slim playoff hope took a hit with the loss. Colorado outshot St. Louis 17-3 in the first period and had a two-goal lead as a result. Nichushkin gave the Avalanche the lead with 3:49 left in the first and Necas made it 2-0 …

“Will you stand for Western civilization?”: Vance demands Hungary reelect Viktor Orbán

“Will you stand for Western civilization?”: Vance demands Hungary reelect Viktor Orbán

Vice President JD Vance traveled to Budapest this week to support the reelection campaign of right-wing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, calling on his citizens to stand with him when they go to the polls on Sunday. Orbán has been in power for 16 years, and is trailing in his fifth campaign to center-right candidate Péter Magyar. As a close ally of President Donald Trump, there is concern in the Trump administration that Orbán’s loss could signal a failure of their shared right-wing policies. Vance appeared at a press conference alongside the prime minister, with the events labeled as a “Day of Friendship.” “I’m here because of the moral cooperation between our two countries,” Vance said on a stage he shared with Orbán. He said the U.S. and Hungary provided a “defense of Western civilization,” that was founded on “Christian civilization and Christian values.” Vance said the European Union was responsible for “one of the worst examples of foreign election interference,” in reference to Hungary being downgraded in 2022 from a full democracy to an “elective …

EU’s Šefčovič confirms push for Western steel club with US and UK – POLITICO

EU’s Šefčovič confirms push for Western steel club with US and UK – POLITICO

“I know that all of our U.K. friends would be very much interested in such a cooperation,” Šefčovič  said. The U.K. has long pushed for inclusion in a Western steel bloc, in the hopes that it could help Britain dodge the new 50 percent tariffs Brussels plans to impose. Britain has already moved in the same direction — tightening quotas on steel imports and raising tariffs above those quotas to 50 percent. “Because of global overcapacities, we have to adopt different safeguard measures,” said Šefčovič. “Americans did it. Canadians followed. We had to adopt our safeguard measures to simply save our steel industry. U.K. is following suit,” he said. Source link

When Soviet Youth Bootlegged Western Rock Music on Discarded X-Rays: Hear Original Audio Samples

When Soviet Youth Bootlegged Western Rock Music on Discarded X-Rays: Hear Original Audio Samples

A catchy tribute to mid-century Soviet hipsters popped up a few years back in a song called “Stilyagi” by lo-fi L.A. hipsters Puro Instinct. The lyrics tell of a charismatic dude who impresses “all the girls in the neighborhood” with his “magnitizdat” and guitar. Wait, his what? His magnitizdat, man! Like samizdat, or underground press, magnitizdat—from the words for “tape recorder” and “publishing”—kept Soviet youth in the know with surreptitious recordings of pop music. Stilyagi (a post-war subculture that copied its style from Hollywood movies and American jazz and rock and roll) made and distributed contraband music in the Soviet Union. But, as an NPR piece informs us, “before the availability of the tape recorder and during the 1950s, when vinyl was scarce, ingenious Russians began recording banned bootleg jazz, boogie woogie and rock ‘n’ roll on exposed X‑ray film salvaged from hospital waste bins and archives.” See one such X‑ray “record” above, and see here the fascinating process dramatized in the first scene of a 2008 Russian musical titled, of course, Stilyagi (translated into …

Thousands of seabirds dying on western Europe’s coasts | Somerset

Thousands of seabirds dying on western Europe’s coasts | Somerset

Thousands of seabirds – mostly puffins, but also many guillemots and razorbills – are being washed up dead or dying on the Atlantic coasts of western Europe, in what scientists call a “wreck”. This year’s events, the consequence of a series of severe storms during the late autumn and winter, are the worst since 2014, when as many as 54,000 birds were found stranded. Of these, well over half – between 30,000 and 34,000 – were puffins. This may only be the tip of a very large iceberg, as puffins usually spend the winter far out in the north Atlantic, meaning many more birds will have died at sea and their corpses will never reach the shore. The RSPB has warned that this recent series of weather-related disasters comes on top of a very tough few years for puffins. Avian flu and a decline of their favourite food – sand eels – have reduced breeding success at their colonies on offshore islands and around our coasts. They, and Britain’s other seabirds, such as gannets, fulmars …
