Millions with lung conditions ‘at risk’ following wet winter and rising energy bills

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Millions of people living with lung conditions face heightened health risks this winter due to persistent wet weather and the looming “spectre” of increased energy bills, a leading charity has warned. Asthma + Lung UK highlighted that exposure to damp and mould, exacerbated by these conditions, can trigger fatal asthma attacks, increase chest infections, and lead to hospital admissions. The warning follows a survey by the charity, conducted before recent oil price rises, which revealed nearly a fifth of people with lung conditions were already struggling to adequately heat their homes. With the Met Office reporting one of the wettest winters on record for the UK, including England’s eighth wettest, these damp environments create an ideal breeding ground for indoor mould. The charity’s most recent annual survey of 9,387 patients confirmed that mould and fungi act as a trigger for a …

More flood warnings as UK’s wet weather set to continue | UK weather

More flood warnings as UK’s wet weather set to continue | UK weather

Anyone hoping for relief from the UK’s wet weather may be disappointed next week, with more flooding expected and patches of snow forecast. The Environment Agency has issued 73 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, mainly in areas of the south-west of England and the Midlands. There are also 177 flood alerts – which indicate possible flooding – in place across England. According to Natural Resources Wales, two flood alerts are in place in South Pembrokeshire and the Lower Severn catchment in Powys. The Met Office said blustery showers would spread across many areas overnight on Sunday, with chilly temperatures for many and frost in the north. Monday will bring sunny spells and showers, with some heavy rainfall expected. There is a risk of hail and thunderstorms, as well as snow showers in the far north. It will be largely drier and brighter on Tuesday. There will be the risk of some rain and snow in the south on Wednesday and Thursday but it will be mostly dry in the north, according to the Met …

Early Mars was warm and wet not icy, suggests latest research

Early Mars was warm and wet not icy, suggests latest research

A recent study showed that Mars was warm and wet billions of years ago. The finding contrasts with another theory that this era was mainly cold and icy. The result has implications for the idea that life could have developed on the planet at this time. Whether Mars was once habitable is a fascinating and intensely researched topic of interest over many decades. Mars, like the Earth, is about 4.5 billion years old and its geological history is divided into different epochs of time. The latest paper relates to Mars during a time called the Noachian epoch, which extended from about 4.1 to 3.7 billion years ago. This was during a stage in solar system history called the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB). Evidence for truly cataclysmic meteorite impacts during the LHB are found on many bodies throughout the solar system. Two obvious scars from this era on Mars are the enormous Hellas and Argyre impact basins; both are well over a thousand miles across and each possesses enough volume to hold all the water in …

Here is why the UK’s weather has been relentlessly wet in 2026

Here is why the UK’s weather has been relentlessly wet in 2026

There is no doubt about it – it has been a miserable start to the year. The Met Office have said that rainfall totals from December 1 to February 9 already exceed the average rainfall for the whole winter in a huge swathe of locations. Persistent rainfall has led to heavy flooding in parts of the country, including Somerset (Ben Birchall/PA) PA Wire The start of February has been particularly grim – several regions, including south and central England, eastern Scotland and northeast England have already reached or exceeded their entire February average rainfall. But why has the weather been so shockingly bad? What weather systems are causing such downpours, and is climate change to blame? And when, oh when, will we see the sunshine again? Why has the weather been so bad? Atmospheric forces are behind the seemingly endless drizzle – but we need to look beyond the UK to the broader North Atlantic region for the full explanation. The jet stream, the Atlantic air current that controls much of our weather, has been …

Why is the UK so wet? The ‘blocking’ phenomenon causing rain to ‘stall’ over country | UK News

Why is the UK so wet? The ‘blocking’ phenomenon causing rain to ‘stall’ over country | UK News

Rainfall records have been broken across Britain as a phenomenon called a “blocking pattern” is causing the wet weather to linger. Blocks are “areas of high pressure that remain nearly stationary and distort the usual […] progression of pressure systems,” the Met Office says. The pattern has settled over northern Europe, preventing weather fronts from clearing and causing the rain to stall over the UK, it added. Check the weather forecast in your area “The result has been continuous waves of rain, strong winds, and hill snow in parts of Scotland,” Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said. This event has created a sense of winter being “stuck on repeat” in many places, the Met Office added, and the persistent rain has caused hundreds of homes to flood, with more at risk. The Environment Agency (EA) had 97 flood warnings in place across England on Tuesday night, with two flood warnings in Scotland. A further 150 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, were in force across England, with seven in Scotland and one in Wales. …

‘No end in sight’ to Britain’s wet weather as dozens of flood warnings issued | UK weather

The unrelenting rain is expected to continue on Sunday and into next week with dozens of flood warnings in place across Great Britain. The Environment Agency (EA) has issued 85 warnings for England, meaning flooding is expected, mainly concentrated in the south-west and Midlands. A further 245 flood alerts are in place, meaning flooding is possible, from North Yorkshire to Cornwall and from the Welsh borders to Norfolk. Natural Resources Wales has another 11 flood alerts in place while Scotland has one flood warning and five flood alerts. The Met Office said there will be further showers on Sunday, particularly in the west, while persistent rain and drizzle will affect parts of Scotland. The outlook for Monday to Wednesday is cloudy with spells of torrential rain across the UK though with occasional drier interludes. It has rained every day for the last 37 days in the UK, while Aberdeen has had zero hours of sunshine since 21 January and Sheffield has had no hours of sunshine so far this month, Sky News reported. In only …

NASA readies for ‘wet dress rehearsal’ ahead of Artemis II moon launch

NASA readies for ‘wet dress rehearsal’ ahead of Artemis II moon launch

As NASA makes final preparations to send four astronauts on a journey around the moon, a critical test Monday will reveal whether its enormous moon rocket is truly ready to fly. Known as a “wet dress rehearsal,” the test is essentially an elaborate launch day walkthrough. NASA will fully fuel its next-generation Space Launch System rocket, going through each step as it would on the actual day up until roughly 30 seconds before liftoff. The results will allow engineers and mission managers to assess the performance and readiness of the booster. The much anticipated Artemis II mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than Sunday and send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the moon. The path will take the crew farther from Earth than any humans have gone before. But the official launch date is highly contingent on the outcome of the wet dress rehearsal. Rodriguez Carrillo/AFP via Getty Images Preparations are underway to begin critical testing of NASA spacecraft for the Artemis II mission that will send four astronauts around the moon. Fuel testing is set to begin Monday, NASA says. The fueling phase of prelaunch testing known as a “wet dress rehearsal” was delayed because of freezing temperatures at the launch pad located at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Here is what to know about preparations and the mission. What exactly is a wet dress rehearsal? A wet dress rehearsal is a designated time before launch when engineers and crew conduct testing of the spacecraft. During this final test, the Orion spacecraft that will house the astronauts and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will be checked over the course of a detailed countdown schedule. A countdown clock began at 8:13 …

16 Best Heat Protectant Sprays for Wet and Dry Hair (2026)

16 Best Heat Protectant Sprays for Wet and Dry Hair (2026)

Honorable Mentions Photograph: Kat Merck Sutra Heat Guard Blowout Cream for $24: I love Sutra’s IR2 hair straightener, so I had high hopes. This thick and almost fragrance-free cream is meant to protect up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and reduce drying time, but my hair felt dried out after use. Mane Temp Check for $26: “Smell cute, feel cuter” goes the slogan for this line of hair products and tools from celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, founder of Ouai. This pink spray immediately cheers up any bathroom counter with its handwritten-style cartoon letters, happy clouds, and lychee/rose/vanilla scent. Though I loved how it worked on my 3a hair, I can see how it may be too drying for some. The Rootist BioBrew Fermented Leave-In Repair Serum for $57: Same as the brand’s dry shampoo, this lightweight spray’s claim to fame is its use of Rootbiotic Ferment, a fermented botanical blend that provides bioavailable nutrients for the scalp and hair. It’s an interesting concept, but I wasn’t blown away by its standard properties like frizz reduction. At …
