China widens anti-corruption net to catch ‘quasi-naked officials’

Removal from a position, especially a senior post, typically signals the end of a person’s career in Chinese politics. It is also often difficult to find private sector employment following removal. Insiders and analysts said the caution about officials’ overseas family ties reflected the party’s growing concerns about fugitives moving embezzled funds abroad. The party insider added that China’s cross-border judicial cooperation with the US had become more challenging in recent years compared with other countries due to the intense rivalry between Beijing and Washington. A provincial official familiar with disciplinary matters said scrutiny had intensified because none of the “naked officials” involved in corruption cases had previously disclosed having family members overseas. Over the past decade, Beijing has expanded its overseas travel restrictions to cover several state employee categories, including officials, executives of state-owned enterprises as well as government contractors and employees at hospitals, the SCMP reported in 2024. The restrictions have only become harsher since then. In at least two provinces in southern China, local authorities have imposed stricter overseas travel requirements on …

Europe’s China shock worsens as trade deficit widens – POLITICO

France’s High Commission for Strategy and Planning estimates that a quarter of the country’s exports are “directly threatened” by Chinese competition. For Germany, that number rises to a third. The advisory body has recommended that the EU retaliate with a weaker euro — which would give exporters a boost — and across-the-board tariffs. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng seemed to offer an olive branch at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland last month. In a speech made in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to annex Greenland, He promised that China would uphold the international trade order and “open its door still wider to the world.” He also said that the government would move to fix economic imbalances that had sapped domestic demand and added to the export glut. Galatasaray secretary sentenced as Turkey widens sweeping illegal football betting probe

Cumhuriyet reports that the club’s general secretary, Eray Yazgan, was sentenced by an Istanbul criminal court to 10 months in prison and fined 2,000 Turkish lira ($46). The charge related to promoting betting and games of chance through advertising.
