The perfect base for a Wind in the Willows weekend: a stylish B&B in the Chilterns | England holidays

The perfect base for a Wind in the Willows weekend: a stylish B&B in the Chilterns | England holidays

Strolling through a deep tangle of beech trees to get some fresh air after a long drive, I think of the scene in Kenneth Grahame’s wistful story The Wind in the Willows, where Mole gets lost in the Wild Wood. “There seemed to be no end to this wood, and no beginning, and no difference in it, and, worst of all, no way out.” I’ve come to South Oxfordshire to explore what was once Grahame’s old stomping ground. Although I don’t share his character’s fear of the woods, I do share his own wonder for this part of the country, close to suburbia yet wrinkled with pockets of wildness. It’s one of those spring days when the light feels elastic and daffodils brighten the verges of muddy lanes. The moon is rising, however, and smoke drifts from the chimney of a cottage just beyond the woods. Nocturnal creatures may be rousing but I’m feeling the pull of a cosy burrow. I leave the trees and head back to my accommodation, Bonni B&B, in Hill Bottom. …

how conspiratorial thinking and wind farm opposition fuel each other

how conspiratorial thinking and wind farm opposition fuel each other

A generalized tendency to believe in secret plots can predict whether someone will oppose the construction of a local wind farm months later. Likewise, coming to oppose that local wind farm can deepen a person’s general conspiratorial worldview over time. These mutually reinforcing perspectives can potentially stall the transition to renewable energy sources if community concerns go unaddressed. The research was recently published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Transitioning to renewable energy often relies heavily on the expansion of onshore wind power. Local communities, however, frequently resist the construction of new turbines in their neighborhoods. Residents might worry about changes to the landscape, the potential impact on local wildlife, or the economic fairness of the development. Without community acceptance, ambitious national goals to mitigate climate change can face severe delays. Previous research indicated that people with a high propensity to believe in conspiracy theories were more likely to oppose local wind farms. A conspiracy mentality is a general worldview characterized by the assumption that secretive, malevolent groups are orchestrating societal events behind the scenes. …

5 offshore wind farms move ahead after Trump admin misses appeal deadline [update]

Photo: Sunrise Wind The US Department of the Interior has missed the final deadline to appeal court rulings allowing five US East Coast offshore wind farms to continue construction. April 10, 2026: In December 2025, the Trump administration ordered construction to stop on five major US offshore wind projects – Sunrise Wind, Vineyard Wind, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, South Fork Wind, and Revolution Wind – citing national security concerns. All five developers challenged the move in court – and all five secured injunctions allowing work to continue. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said he planned to appeal those rulings. But a bipartisan group of senators has been negotiating a long-awaited energy permitting reform bill for months, and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, made it clear that if Burgum appealed, then the permitting deal would fall apart. Burgum allowed the final appeal deadline to lapse, and the five wind farms can proceed with construction and come online as planned. Collectively, they’ll be capable of generating …

UK storm forecast as 60mph gales and heavy rain threaten Grand National | Weather | News

There will be widespread rain this weekend (Image: WXCharts) Heavy rain and strong winds are expected on Saturday, April 11, as Aintree’s Grand National gets underway. The event kicks off today as much of the country enjoys warm and dry weather, but that will soon change as racing fans flock to Aintree over the weekend. Current projections from forecasting service WXCharts show rain stretching from Scotland throughout the North West of England and down to the south coast, along with winds as strong as 60mph. More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the event over the four days it is running, with the weekend to be particularly busy. Ticket-holders should prepare for unfavourable conditions on Saturday, April 11, according to the latest weather maps. The Met Office has warned of patchy showers with some sunny spells in the region on Saturday, with similar conditions expected on Sunday, April 12. It comes after a particularly warm spell at the beginning of April, as temperatures soared into the mid-20s this week. READ MORE: Snow maps show …

California ocean wind power that floats is forcing engineering firsts

California ocean wind power that floats is forcing engineering firsts

EUREKA, Calif. — Here along the rugged North Coast of California, there’s little to suggest that Humboldt Bay, with its eelgrass, oysters and osprey nests, will soon become a launchpad for one of the most ambitious clean energy projects in state history: a hub for floating offshore wind. The plan is for major private players to erect hundreds of wind turbines in the bay — each rising as high as L.A.’s tallest skyscrapers — then tow them out to the ocean. Some experts believe the wind project is critical to California’s goal of 100% carbon neutrality by 2045 and represents a key climate change solution. The state has a target of 25 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by that year — enough to power about 25 million homes — and nearly all of it would come from five lease areas in federal waters near Humboldt and Morro bays. Yet the technology for wind power that floats — as opposed to standard towers permanently attached to the sea floor — is just emerging, and has never been attempted …

Dry weather and wind set up tough conditions for Masters

Dry weather and wind set up tough conditions for Masters

AUGUSTA, Georgia, April 8 : Dry weather, low humidity and the possibility of wind are expected to leave Augusta National playing firm and fast for this week’s Masters, a prospect top players said would add to the challenge of the year’s first major. World number one Scottie Scheffler said the forecast was among the best he had seen at Augusta in recent years and should produce the kind of quick conditions that test every part of a player’s game. “The forecast looks great. It’s going to get firm and fast,” said Scheffler, a two-time Masters champion.  “I would imagine they (tournament organizers) would like the greens to get fast. I think that increases the challenge of the golf course.” Scheffler said the course was “shaping up nicely” and that even a small amount of rain earlier in the week had done little to change the expectation that the greens would remain firm. “We might get a little bit of wind too,” he said. “This is the best forecast I’ve seen for this tournament in a while.” …

behavior: The way something (often a person or other organism) conducts itself or acts towards others. biology: The study of living things. The scientists who study them are known as biologists. chemical: A substance formed from two or more atoms that unite (bond) in a fixed proportion and structure. For example, water is a chemical made when two hydrogen atoms bond to one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H2O. Chemical also can be an adjective to describe properties of materials that are the result of various reactions between different compounds. drone: A remote-controlled, pilotless aircraft or missile. engineer: A person who uses science and math to solve problems. As a verb, to engineer means to design a device, material or process that will solve some problem or unmet need. environment: The sum of all of the things that exist around some organism or the process and the condition those things create. Environment may refer to the weather and ecosystem in which some animal lives, or, perhaps, the temperature and humidity (or even the placement of things …

An Art Expert on Where The Magnani-Rocca’s Stolen Art Might Wind Up

An Art Expert on Where The Magnani-Rocca’s Stolen Art Might Wind Up

To Kimiko Bossi of Finarte, the recent theft at the Magnani-Rocca Foundation has a broader significance. “This is a very hard blow not only to the institution involved, but to the entire art world,” she says. “It represents a serious episode, both for the economic value of the works, and, above all, for their cultural importance.” Bossi is the Senior Director and Expert of Modern and Contemporary Art at the renowned auction house, and her comments come as the world comes to terms with the loss of substantial works of renowned masters. On March 22, thieves stole a Renoir, a Cézanne, and a Matisse from the legendary museum in the village of Mamiano di Traversetolo, near Parma. The theft raises serious questions about what happens when well-documented work makes it to the black market. Vanity Fair Italia spoke to Bossi about the art crime system that springs into action after such a tragic event. “We are talking about very recognizable works, stolen in a manner that is now the focus of law enforcement investigations,” she …

UK to construct first floating offshore wind farm in Celtic Sea

UK to construct first floating offshore wind farm in Celtic Sea

Up to £64m government funding will back Port Talbot’s development as the first port in the Celtic Sea specifically developed to support floating offshore wind. The new port will help unlock at least 4.5 GW of floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea – helping deliver clean, homegrown electricity, protect households from volatile fossil fuel markets and create up to 5,000 new jobs. The new initiative builds upon work by the UK Government to support the steel industry in Port Talbot and to allocate all £122m funding to training for Tata Steel workers and businesses to regenerate the town. The funding will enable Associated British Ports (ABP) to complete the essential design and engineering work needed to build one of the first floating offshore wind ports in the UK at Port Talbot. Why the Celtic Sea? The Celtic Sea offers some of the best conditions for floating offshore wind in Europe. Unlike traditional offshore wind farms, floating turbines are deployed in deeper waters, where they can harness stronger, more consistent wind speeds. This funding is …

The US’s largest offshore wind farm just produced its first power

Photo: CVOW Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, which will be the US’s largest wind farm when it’s complete, has sent its first power to the grid. Dominion CEO Robert Blue confirmed the milestone on LinkedIn, writing that the wind farm had delivered its first power “right on schedule”: This project is a critical part of Virginia’s all‑of‑the‑above energy strategy. As additional turbines are installed, CVOW will continue delivering more power on the path to full completion early next year. The 2.6-gigawatt (GW) CVOW, 28 miles off Virginia Beach and under construction since 2024, is about 70% complete, with 176 monopiles installed. Two Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines have been installed, and power is currently being generated from one of them. The Charybdis, the first Jones Act-compliant wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), installed the wind turbines. Construction on a third is underway. The turbines will be turned on gradually throughout the rest of the year. The project is scheduled to finish in early 2027. Advertisement – scroll for more content Dominion Energy became …
