Can you stop malaria crossing borders? One nation’s bid to wipe out the disease | Global health

The freezer is filled with blue-lidded tubes of cows’ blood, ready to be defrosted and used to feed the colony of mosquitoes. “Also, you can use your arm,” says Nombuso Princess Bhembe, who tends the mosquitoes at Eswatini’s national insectary, an unremarkable building in the town of Siphofaneni, part of the southern African country’s push to eliminate malaria. But the landlocked nation of 1.2 million people, formerly known as Swaziland, is facing headwinds from not only the climate crisis, aid cuts and insecticide resistance but also economic migration from countries with higher case numbers. In 2024, Eswatini recorded 362 confirmed malaria cases, while neighbouring Mozambique recorded 11.6m cases, one of the world’s highest figures. Next door, South Africa recorded 4,639. It is easy for the malaria parasite to travel in the blood of people using informal crossings along porous borders. Cooper Slams Trump’s Threat To Wipe Out Iranian Civilisation

Yvette Cooper has hit out at Donald Trump after the US president threatened to wipe out Iranian civilisation. Having already warned Iran must agree to end the war earlier this week or risk attacks on civilian infrastructure, the president claimed on Tuesday that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Tehran did not agree to US demands. Those genocidal remarks sparked widespread horror. The government did not respond to the shocking remarks at the time and a subsequent ceasefire deal luckily meant Trump did not escalate any further tensions with Iran. But on Thursday, foreign secretary Yvette Cooper suggested Trump had gone too far. She told Sky News: “We take a different view from the US on issues, and it is possible for us to be strong, close partners on a whole range of issues, but also to take different decisions on issues. “I think that the rhetoric that we’ve seen used, I think, has been completely wrong. I think that sort of escalatory rhetoric can have escalatory consequences.” She also called for a clear …

The U.S. president has been widely criticized for using social media to threaten Iran, after writing on Truth Social: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” According to reports published by the Italian news agency ANSA, Clooney was addressing high school students at an event in Cuneo, Italy when he said: “Some say Donald Trump is fine. But if anyone says he wants to end a civilization, that’s a war crime.” The 64-year-old actor continued: “You can still support the conservative point of view, but there must be a line of decency, and we must not cross it.” The White House shot back in a statement to The Independent, with Communications Director Steven Cheung saying: “The only person committing war …

Trump faces calls for removal over threats to wipe out Iran civilization

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., speaks to the media outside the U.S. Capitol after the House of Representatives voted to pass President Donald Trump’s sweeping spending and tax bill, in Washington, July 3, 2025. Ken Cedeno | Reuters The reticence expressed by Democrats about removing President Donald Trump from office — even after he ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and attacked Iran without seeking congressional approval — quickly fell away after his latest threat to Iran. The president’s Tuesday morning Truth Social post, which threatened “a whole civilization will die tonight” and raised the specter of nuclear war, began a chorus of calls either for Trump’s impeachment or for his removal via the invocation of the 25th Amendment. On Tuesday evening, Trump and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire. “This is a threat of genocide and merits removal from office. The President’s mental faculties are collapsing and cannot be trusted,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., posted to X on Tuesday. “To every individual in the President’s chain of command: You have a duty to refuse illegal orders. …

Trump threatens to wipe out Iran’s ‘whole civilization.’ EU has no comment. – POLITICO

Iran has blocked sea traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil normally travels, sending prices skyrocketing. Trump’s latest warnings come after he suggested strikes would hit bridges, desalination plants and energy targets — which could include civilian infrastructure that, if attacked deliberately, could constitute a war crime. “We don’t want to discuss hypotheticals at this point,” said an EU diplomat, who is also party to the bloc’s policy on Trump and the Iran war. The diplomat and the official were granted anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” Trump said in his Tuesday afternoon post. “WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!” It was left to a smattering of members of the European Parliament to …

Russia threatens to ‘wipe Britain off Earth’ after Putin humiliated – WW3 fears explode | World | News

Putin (Image: Getty) Vladimir Putin’s leading attack dog is calling for Russian military strikes on Britain after the humiliating use of UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to destroy a key Kremlin war factory. Prime time TV host Vladimir Solovyov was unleashed after the dictator faced ignominy over seven direct hits on a key Silicon El microelectronics plant. Russian air defences failed to down any of the missiles which hit the facility 75 miles from the Ukrainian border. The British.” The plant makes hi-tech components for multiple Russian missiles including Iskanders, S-300 and S-400s, Pantsirs, and Bulavas. Care costs can ‘completely wipe out’ inheritance – and it’s shaping family finances

Care costs can ‘completely wipe out’ inheritance – and it’s shaping family finances

Rising care costs are quietly reshaping family finances – and squeezing the so-called bank of mum and dad. New research suggests that growing anxiety about paying for care in later life is causing parents to hold back from helping their adult children now, even when they want to. Data commissioned by Octopus Money shows that two-thirds (67 per cent) of UK adults who plan to give money to family members say they would have liked to give more, but worry about covering their own future expenses. More than 60 per cent of this group are specifically keeping funds aside for potential care costs. For families juggling children who need help with housing, childcare or rising living costs, a painful trade-off is emerging: support children now, or preserve capital in case it is swallowed up by care fees later. Care costs are fuelling the fear The scale of the potential bill explains the anxiety. For people who self-fund, care home fees can cost up to £1,500 a week in the UK, depending on location and type …

How to clear your iPhone cache (and wipe out lag for good)

How to clear your iPhone cache (and wipe out lag for good)

What is cache on my iPhone? Cache is a collection of temporary files that apps and websites store locally on your device to speed up loading, browsing, and your overall session. For example, Safari saves images or scripts from sites so they don’t have to download again. It’s helpful, but too much cache can slow your iPhone down, so clearing it regularly keeps performance smooth. Also: Cookie pop-ups don’t have to be a fact of life online – how I block them and why Clearing cache only removes temporary data, not your bookmarks, messages, photos, or passwords. Offloading an app also preserves your data and settings if you want to reinstall it later, but deleting an app wipes everything for a full reset. Is cache the same as cookies? Cache and cookies aren’t the same. Cache stores copies of images, scripts, and other elements so websites load faster next time. Cookies, on the other hand, save personal data like logins, preferences, and shopping cart items. While clearing cache removes saved page files, deleting cookies erases …
