Politics Home | Keir Starmer Says It “Beggars Belief” Officials Withheld Information Over Peter Mandelson

(Alamy) 2 min read13 min Keir Starmer has said it “beggars belief” the Foreign Office withheld information over Peter Mandelson’s vetting failure. The Prime Minister addressed MPs in the House of Commons on Monday after it came to light that Mandelson was appointed as US ambassador despite serious security concerns and failing vetting checks.  It has also emerged that the single biggest client of Mandelson’s ex-lobbying firm Global Counsel was linked to the Chinese army. Downing Street has said security concerns and vetting failures were not raised with them after Mandelson was appointed.  Starmer told MPs it was “astonishing” neither he nor his cabinet were informed about Mandelson prior to securing the job. Starmer told the Commons: “I know many members across the House will find these facts to be incredible.” “To that, I can only say they are right. It beggars belief that throughout the whole timeline of events, officials in the Foreign Office saw fit to withhold this information from the most senior ministers in our system in government. “That is …

“Points to possible cover-up”: DOJ withheld Trump-related documents in Epstein files

The Department of Justice omitted information in the Epstein files surrounding allegations that President Donald Trump sexually abused a minor, per an investigation published by NPR on Tuesday The Epstein Files Transparency Act was signed into law in November 2025 and required the DOJ to release all unclassified materials related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. The latest tranche of files was released Jan. 30. NPR reviewed the unique serial numbers on the pages of the Epstein files in their investigation, which showed that many pages catalogued by the DOJ are not shared publicly. Of the documents not available to the public, more than 50 concerned FBI interviews with a woman who accused Trump of sexually abusing her when she was a minor.  The accuser was interviewed four times. Only the first interview, in which Trump is not mentioned, is available in the database. More information from discovery in Maxwell’s investigation was found, but only seven of the 15 documents are publicly available. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., of the House Oversight Committee shared a statement about the …

Robert Garcia said on Tuesday. Garcia’s statement comes after reports that FBI interviews with that accuser were not viewable on the DOJ’s database of millions of files related to Epstein that were made public after a federal law was passed by Congress mandating their disclosure. “For the last few weeks, Oversight Democrats have been investigating the FBI’s handling of allegations from 2019 of sexual assault on a minor made against President Donald Trump by a survivor,” Garcia, D-Calif., said in a statement. “Yesterday, I reviewed unredacted evidence logs at the Department of Justice. Oversight Democrats can confirm that the DOJ appears to have illegally withheld FBI interviews with this survivor who accused President Trump of heinous …

Gabbard Rejects Claims She Withheld Whistleblower Complaint From Congress

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) – U.S. Director of National Intelligence ‌Tulsi Gabbard on Saturday disputed claims ‌by lawmakers that she sought to block Congress from accessing a whistleblower complaint, saying she took “immediate action” once notified of the need to provide security guidance for its ‍release.  A top-secret complaint filed with the intelligence community’s inspector general last May by an anonymous government official alleged that the U.S. spy chief’s office sought to prevent the routine dissemination of certain classified intelligence for political reasons.  Gabbard was appointed to her post by Republican President Donald Trump last year. A November letter from Andrew Bakaj, the whistleblower’s lawyer, to Gabbard’s office, which was also shared with the House ‌of Representatives and Senate intelligence committees, alleged that Gabbard had hindered the dissemination of the ‌May complaint to lawmakers by ‍failing to provide necessary security guidance on how to handle it.  Democrats such as Senator Mark Warner, the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, have said that Gabbard’s agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, was required …
