Just 12 members of the Southampton University Students’ Union backed a scheme to make plant-based food the default option across all bars, canteens and cafes it runs on campus with critics slamming the decision and demanding pupils have “freedom of choice”. Victoria Atkins MP, Shadow Environment Secretary, said: “What has happened to freedom of choice? Why foist a vegan diet on 25,000 students because a few hundred of them signed a petition?” She added: “If the student union is so worried about the environmental impacts of food, presumably they will also ban avocados flown in from the other side of the world, grown in the smoke-blackened embers of rainforest deforestation.” Ms Atkins said: “Students should have the choice to buy good, local meat and dairy products – produced in the UK, to the highest animal welfare standards in the world.” The changes, which come into effect next academic year, followed a vote …

The threat came on Tuesday during a meeting between Hegseth and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, according to two people with direct knowledge of the meeting who were not authorized to speak publicly. While both sides agreed Hegseth vowed to punish Anthropic for not bending to the administration’s demands, accounts of what exactly the threat was vary. One person close to the discussion said Hegseth dangled the possibility of canceling Anthropic’s $200 million contract with the Defense Department, while a Pentagon official said repercussions could include forcing Anthropic to allow the federal government to use its AI tools against its will and blacklisting the company from receiving future work with the U.S. military.  For months, Amodei has insisted that using AI for domestic mass …

The most prestigious board ever put together. That is how the president of the United States, a man convicted of fraud, described his new team focused on international relations. A team that does not include representatives from our closest neighbors — Mexico and Canada — but did save room for leaders accused of war crimes by the International Criminal Court. Now, we do not know whether President Trump created his “Board of Peace,” which this week held its first meeting, specifically to undermine the authority of the United Nations. But we do know that the president has pledged $10 billion in tax dollars to the board’s mission while still owing the U.N. half that amount in back payments. We do not know whether Trump, who is indefinitely the leader of this peace board, intends to relinquish that power after he leaves the White House. One explicit goal of the second Trump administration, if not its defining mission, is to undo the recent past and rewrite history to fit its own master narrative. By now it’s axiomatic that making America “great again” has never referred to any fixed point in the actual American past; it’s more like a mashup or highlight reel of random images taken from eras before any living American was born. We can see that vision embodied with startling literalness in the propaganda posters recently concocted by the Labor Department, such as the depiction of a whites-only church picnic apparently taking place in Uncanny Valley. A massive ice storm that plunged tens of thousands of Tennessee homes into darkness has become a political flash point as angry residents cope with power outages stretching into a second week. The finger-pointing escalated this week as some Republicans argued that a major utility company run by Democratic appointees has “woke” policies on diversity and tree-trimming that are the causes of customers’ woes. There’s bipartisan and widespread consensus that Nashville Electric Service, which serves the city as well as surrounding counties, mishandled the storm, struggling to mobilize enough workers and equipment to quickly clear fallen trees and restore service. Roughly 6,000 customers still don’t have power 11 days after the storm. Amid communication snafus, some residents were incorrectly told their lights were back on. In Davidson County, a 39-year-old man and a 92-year-old man were found dead of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes, with generators nearby. Katie Miller, the conservative podcaster, former DOGE aide, and wife to Stephen Miller, thinks the Constitution and the philosophical tradition upon which it is based are “woke” nonsense. Or possibly she doesn’t understand what they are. It’s hard to say which explanation is worse. For several days, analysts have debated which of these discouraging explanations pertains. The relevant text is a pair of angry posts on X (most of her posts are angry) this week. The first came at 8:20 Monday morning. She highlighted, with evident alarm, a post from the day before by Caitlin Kalinowski, a hardware engineer best known for her work on virtual reality. Ever since, the public conversation about “cancel culture” and the effects of social media on our lives has changed profoundly. In 2022, Elon Musk bought Twitter, eventually turning it into X, a site where white supremacists, race scientists, and out-and-out Nazis enjoy chopping it up. Williams found this development particularly disturbing. “Questions are back in play that I really would have thought were completely settled, even in 2020,” Williams says. “People are getting tens of thousands of likes for tweeting that all immigration must stop.” Eventually we’ll know for sure if a repeat of Williams’s journey—a rejection of Woke 1, a negative experience of Trump 2, and a tentative embrace of Woke 2—is happening across the nation.
