Barunson Boards Indonesian Horror Feature ‘Zona Merah: Dead City’

Barunson E&A, the Korean production banner best known for backing Bong Joon Ho’s multi-Oscar winner Parasite, has boarded Zona Merah: Dead City, a feature film adaptation of the hit Indonesian horror series Zona Merah.  The Seoul outfit will handle international sales on the project, produced by Indonesia’s Screenplay Films, and launch it at the upcoming Cannes Marché alongside Inherit, the new horror feature from Thai hitmaker Banjong Pisanthanakun. The deal extends Barunson’s ongoing push into Southeast Asian cinema, as the Korean company continues to assemble a portfolio of saleable genre titles from the region. The original Zona Merah debuted as an original series on Vidio, the Emtek Group-owned platform that has emerged as Indonesia’s leading domestic streamer. Set in the fictional town of Rimbalaya, the show follows Maya as she searches for her missing younger brother Adi amid a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak, racing to find him before authorities seal off the area as a “zona merah,” or red zone. By Wednesday morning, when Zona Maco opened its 22nd edition to VIPs, Mexico City Art Week was in full swing. Monday and Tuesday had seen a slew of gallery openings across the capital city, with museum exhibitions also opening this week. The energy during opening day was vibrant, with many dealers telling ARTnews that last year was great, and this year is seemingly even stronger. How that will translate into sales still remains to be seen. But what is certain is that there is a strong showing of art at the fair, which focuses on contemporary art but also hosts dealers of antiquities and curios, modern art, design, and photography in the expansive hall of the Centro Banamex, on the outskirts of CDMX. Mexico City’s Zona Maco to Bring Together 241 Exhibitors Next Month

Next month, Zona Maco, one of Latin America’s top fairs, will alight in Mexico City, bringing together droves of collectors to Centro Banamex, on the outskirts of the capital city for the fair along will several satellites. The fair will take place during the same time as the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar, but the conflict doesn’t seem to have impacted Zona Maco, which said it has 50 museum board groups confirmed to attend during the event running from February 4–8. The upcoming iteration will bring together 241 exhibitors across nine sections, several of which focus mainly on modern and contemporary art. There are also sections for design, books, and antiquities.
