“Cheaters and thieves”: Trump spends New Year’s Eve bashing Democratic Party, blue cities

Donald Trump doesn’t seem interested in turning over a new leaf in 2026. The president spent the last day of the year attacking his enemies in the Democratic Party and leadership in blue cities. “The Democrats are a bunch of cheaters and thieves that never want to do what’s good for America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They refuse to even consider Voter Identification. Why??? Because they want to cheat, and the Republicans should not put up with this.. any longer!!!” The claims of cheating came mere hours after Trump praised Tina Peters, a 2020 election denier and former Mesa County clerk who was sentenced to 9 years in prison for allowing unauthorized people to access the local election system. “God Bless Tina Peters, who is now, for two years out of nine, sitting in a Colorado Maximum Security Prison, at the age of 73, and sick, for the ‘crime’ of trying to stop the massive voter fraud that goes on in her State,” he wrote. “Hard to wish her a Happy New Year, but …

Scientists discover onion-like layering in Earth’s inner core

Scientists discover onion-like layering in Earth’s inner core

Earth’s inner core has long challenged researchers because seismic waves do not move through it uniformly. Compressional waves generated by earthquakes travel roughly 3 to 4 percent faster along Earth’s rotation axis than they do across the equator. This directional difference, called seismic anisotropy, also varies with depth. Near the outer boundary of the inner core, anisotropy is relatively weak, typically around 2 percent or less. Deeper toward the center, the effect becomes much stronger, rising to about 4 to 6 percent. Understanding why this directional behavior intensifies with depth remains a major problem in Earth science. Two leading explanations have been proposed. One argues that the shapes of grains or inclusions inside the core become aligned, a mechanism known as shape preferred orientation. The other points to lattice preferred orientation, in which the crystal structures themselves line up as the material undergoes deformation. An overview of the experimental setup at DESY in Hamburg reveals the vacuum chamber housing the high-temperature diamond anvil cell: The cell’s orange colour comes from the light it emits at …

Commentary: Parents, don’t think about screen use for teenagers only in terms of limits

Commentary: Parents, don’t think about screen use for teenagers only in terms of limits

Teenagers see devices as extensions of their social world. As one 15-year-old said to us in our research, “If I don’t have social media, I don’t know what’s happening among my friends. When I go to school, I feel left out.” KNOW THE MEDIA, KNOW THE CHILD Many conversations fail because parents are unfamiliar with the media their children use – know the media, know the child. Understanding what makes a game, video or influencer appealing helps parents guide, rather than police. Parents don’t need to spend hours playing games or binge-watching content from controversial creators to understand their appeal. What matters is gaining enough insight into why these experiences resonate with kids. For instance, if parents think of Roblox simply as a “game”, they may miss the point – children often see it as a platform for socialising and expressing creativity, not just a challenge to beat or level up. A quick way to learn is by watching gameplay clips on YouTube to get a sense of what the games involve. The same approach works for …

Windows 11 is ‘enhancing’ your audio, and you should probably turn it off

Windows 11 is ‘enhancing’ your audio, and you should probably turn it off

By default, Windows 11 enables a few settings that can drastically change how your audio input and output sound. Your system’s audio drivers, default devices, sample rates, or Bluetooth codec settings can all cause your headphones, speakers, or microphone to sound worse than expected. If you’re not an audiophile, you may not know that Windows 11 is applying “audio enhancements” to your system sound automatically, and it might be doing more harm than good. For some reason, Microsoft enables audio enhancements in Windows 11 by default, and this can cause compatibility issues and general instability with certain audio accessories and software programs. However, audio enhancements are also critical for certain features, so not everyone should rush to disable them. Here’s how Windows 11 is adjusting your computer’s sound, and whether you should put a stop to it. Avengers, Toy Story 5, The Odyssey

2026 is looking to be a top-tier year at the movie theater. The latest installments in the Dune, Spider-Man and Avengers franchises will be released, while Millennial nostalgia will continue at the multiplex with Devil Wears Prada and Practical Magic sequels. And new films from Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig will both be gracing IMAX screens. (Though not at the same time, so don’t expect a Barbenheimer repeat.) As for star power, movies with Jacob Elordi, Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson and Ariana Grande are on the docket. Zendaya will have a particularly big year with the A24 release The Drama, Nolan’s The Odyssey and the third Dune, plus Spider-Man: Brand New Day. These are the most anticipated movies (with release dates) heading to theaters in 2026. Ukraine, EU Officials Dismiss Alleged Attack on Putin Residence

By Gram Slattery and Jonathan Landay WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, Dec 31 (Reuters) – Ukrainian and European officials have rejected Moscow’s claims that ‌Ukraine targeted a personal residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin with a drone ‌attack this week, an incident that threatens to disrupt U.S.-led peace negotiations heading into the new year.
