A large tent collapsed during a Virginia church’s 20th anniversary celebration on Friday evening, killing one person and injuring nearly two dozen others, officials said. Heavy rain, lightning and strong winds tore through Moneta, a small community about 124 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of Richmond, as the EastLake Community Church was holding an outdoor service, Shelley Basinger, a spokesperson for Bedford County, said in a statement. The group was in the process of leaving the event tent when it collapsed, according to Abbey Johnston, acting chief of Bedford County Fire and Rescue Eleven people were taken to the hospital and 11 others had minor injuries and were treated at the scene, Basinger said. “Initially, I’m told it was a very chaotic scene, trying to account for the individuals,” Johnston told reporters. Officials rushed to rescue everyone inside the tent behind the church and move them to safety as the strong thunderstorm raged on, she said. Independent launched Independent 20th Century in 2022 in the Battery Maritime Building, a Beaux-Arts landmark overlooking New York Harbor. This fall, the fair is moving uptown to Marcel Breuer’s former Whitney Museum building, now Sotheby’s global headquarters. The fifth edition of Independent 20th Century will run from September 24–27 at the Breuer, bringing together 56 exhibitors and presentations devoted to artists and movements from across the 20th century. More than 130 artists will be featured, with roughly 80 percent of the presentations dedicated to one or two artists. For Independent founder Elizabeth Dee, the move marks more than a change of address. For the 20th-anniversary iPhone, Apple is said to be introducing a display that curves down around all four edges of the device for a borderless visual experience. It could be one of the biggest design shifts in the iPhone’s history since the 10th anniversary iPhone X, which saw Apple drop the Home button, introduce a notched display, and adopt an intuitive swipe gesture-based navigation interface. Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone will use a new type of curved screen technology that more effectively hides the display bezels from the user’s line of sight for a purer viewing experience, claims a Chinese leaker. Apple is reportedly planning a radical redesign for the 20th-anniversary iPhone that could feature a display that curves around all four edges of the device. To achieve this, Apple will reportedly use an equal-depth quad-curved panel supplied by Samsung, and it sounds like it’s going to be quite different from typical curved screens.
