Better fitness in your 40s and 50s linked to a longer, healthier life

Better fitness in your 40s and 50s linked to a longer, healthier life

Researchers have found that cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) during midlife provides a greater benefit than just living longer. It also means that the onset of serious illnesses is delayed. This is one of the main points of a new study published in JACC, the American College of Cardiology’s flagship journal. The study found that those who had higher levels of CRF during middle age not only lived longer, but also experienced major chronic diseases later in life and spent more years living in good health. When looking at these results, it is important to separate living longer from living longer without any major chronic disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, etc. Cardiorespiratory fitness, or CRF, refers to how efficiently your heart and lungs supply oxygen for physical activities. For many years, it has been established that individuals with higher levels of CRF have a lower risk of dying from heart disease or other illnesses that might result in an early death. Now we see that CRF in midlife is also related to what …

Dating in your 40s isn’t easy. But I was willing to give it a try

Editor’s note: A version of this story, performed by the author, won the L.A. Affairs Live storytelling event on April 3. I am engaged. Which I didn’t think would ever happen. In my 40s, I was in love with someone. We lived together and had been together for seven years. I thought that would be my last relationship. Then he broke up with me, and I was suddenly dumped at 46. I was terrified that would be my last relationship. I don’t know if you’ve ever had the experience of being single in L.A. in your late 40s, but I don’t recommend it. None out of 10. All the thumbs down. It felt like missing the last helicopter out of ’Nam, as if I were running after couplehood as bombs went off around me and yelling, “Nnnnnooooooooooo!!” And I could add, “I know it’s not working out but don’t gggggooooooooo!!!” as I reached with all I had to not be left behind. I felt I had to concede: “Well, die alone it is, then.” I …

Women in their 40s and 50s should be doing this one underrated type of exercise to improve balance and bone health, according to an expert

Women in their 40s and 50s should be doing this one underrated type of exercise to improve balance and bone health, according to an expert

You might assume that jumping exercises are something you should avoid as you get older, but you’d be mistaken. Although low-impact workouts are great for helping you build strength, recover from injury and protect sensitive joints, incorporating some high-impact moves into your routines could also support your body, particularly for women. “Jump training can improve bone health, balance, and your ability to perform all kinds of activities from walking up the stairs to catching yourself if you step off a curb,” says Dr Elizabeth Knight, who researches women’s health at menopause wellness platform Respin. Article continues below You may like “These are all key areas for long-term health, and midlife is the time when these indicators can start to decline, often slowly, so you might not notice until you’ve lost a lot,” she says. According to Knight, a solid workout routine includes strength, cardio, mobility and impact exercises—such as jumping movements. “Adding exercises like jump training to your routine before you experience falls, fractures and weakness is the goal,” she explains. “This is a proactive …

Article continues below You may like Since becoming a parent, Haley says she has had to be realistic about how much movement she can really fit into her weeks and focus on what’s most important for her. “Sometimes, when you’re a parent, your life isn’t about you anymore, and so you’re trying to squeeze [workouts] in,” she says. With all her children in school, she’s been able to start training more. But she says it’s important to be realistic with where you’re …

How to Stay Fit in Your 40s

How to Stay Fit in Your 40s

For the relatively fit, gym-going man, your forties are probably the most disorientating decade. No longer young, not yet old, you exist in a sort of liminal space where your physical prowess is neither expected nor admired. But what does it look like being in shape in your forties? Surely, the bar has to be set somewhere. Well, we’re happy to report (or regretful, depending on whether you find this to be aspirational or depressing) that your body of 40-ish years needn’t look all that different from how it did 10 or even 20 years ago. In fact, it could very realistically be much better. That said, how you achieve and maintain an impressive physique in your forties is where things start to look quite different. “The biggest mistake I see men make in their forties is to attempt to train as if they’re still 25,” says Nick Olsen, personal trainer and founder of X365 Fitness. “Recovery takes longer, there’s an even greater effect of stress on it, and if one ignores things like sleep, …

Dating In Your 40s: My Time On A Reality Dating Show

Dating In Your 40s: My Time On A Reality Dating Show

I never imagined that finding love in my 40s would lead me to reality television. Yet there I was, staring at an Instagram DM from a friend that read: “This show sounds perfect for you 👀.” She’d tagged me in a casting call for Kings Court, a new show set to premiere on Bravo TV and Peacock. My first instinct was to laugh. I’m a doctor. I’m used to saving lives, not competing for declarations of love on prime-time television. But after years of long hospital shifts, well-meaning advice from friends and dating apps that felt more like an obstacle course than a love story, I had to face a quieter truth: success hadn’t made dating easier. It had made it lonelier. So, I didn’t delete the message. I sat with it. And eventually, I clicked on the link. Dating in my 40s as a successful Black woman isn’t what people might imagine. From the outside, it looks like options. On the inside, it often feels like silence. Between 12-hour workdays, raising my son, and …

The surprising reason I’m losing my hair in my 40s – and the good news about getting it back

The surprising reason I’m losing my hair in my 40s – and the good news about getting it back

I’m usually quick to attribute every miserable sign of ageing to the perimenopause. So when I found myself sitting in the Mayfair office of Anabel Kingsley, a leading trichologist and the brand president of Philip Kingsley Clinics, bemoaning my quietly retreating hairline and shrinking ponytail, plus the alarming number of strands appearing everywhere from my hairbrush to my washing machine, I was ready to point the finger squarely at my hormones. But after inspecting my scalp in HD, Anabel asked a surprising question: “Were you ill about three or four months ago?” I didn’t even have to think. Despite my (definitely perimenopausal) memory lapses, the bout of flu I had in November is etched into my nervous system. It was the kind that leaves you bedridden, followed by a hacking cough that lasted for nearly two months. “That’s what this hair loss is,” she confirmed. Hair loss following flu? Even as a (well-seasoned) beauty editor, this was news to me. © ShutterstockIf you’re finding yourself losing hair, think back to when you were last ill From …

Jane Fallon’s ‘brave and bonkers’ life shift in her 40s – and partner Ricky Gervais

Jane Fallon’s ‘brave and bonkers’ life shift in her 40s – and partner Ricky Gervais

Before the award-winning comedian Ricky Gervais hit the big time, his partner, the best-selling author Jane Fallon, was the breadwinner in their relationship. At the start of their careers in the mid-1980s, the couple, who met at university and have been together for more than 40 years, lived above a “scary” brothel in King’s Cross, London, during what she recalls as a “bleak” period in their lives.  Although Ricky was undecided about which path to follow, Jane, 65, became a TV producer, going on to work on shows including EastEnders and having hits with Teachers and This Life. “I was always saying: ‘I’m going to get us out of this. I’m going to work my way out of this,’” the author of Welcome to the Neighbourhood tells Ateh Jewel on this week’s episode of HELLO!’s Second Act podcast. © GettyJane with her long-term partner Ricky Gervais “I felt as though I was on the rung of the ladder I wanted to be on. I knew that once I got a proper road into TV, that would be something …

Katherine Jenkins on finally finding ‘clarity’ and purpose in her 40s – exclusive

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Katherine Jenkins, as the UK’s best-selling classical musician, has always been crystal clear about her path in life. So it comes as a surprise when the mezzo-soprano, 45, tells HELLO! that she feels as though she has only recently come into her own. “In my forties, I’ve found I have a stronger sense of self than ever before,” she tells us in this exclusive interview. “I have total clarity now. I know very clearly what I want to do and what I don’t want to do.” Although that won’t include appearing in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! (Katherine says she is invited to take part in the reality show every year), the Welsh singer has made her first foray into the business world with Cygnet, her luxury drinks brand, which launched in 2023 and featured at this month’s Golden Globes ceremony. “A proud moment” is how she describes the night, when Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence were pictured enjoying martinis made with Cygnet gin.  © CBS via …
