Trump’s ‘absurdly incoherent’ Iran pleas leave allies befuddled – POLITICO

Despite the lack of concrete support, allies’ joint statement appears to be pleasing Washington. “It’s common sense for President Trump to call on our NATO allies to step up and do more to help secure the Strait [of] Hormuz,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Sunday. “Now we’re already starting to see them answer the President’s call.” In practice, Europe could deploy destroyers to help Washington escort convoys through the strait, said Sidharth Kaushal, a senior research fellow and naval military expert at the Royal United Services Institute, since the U.S. only has around 25 of the heavily-armed, missile-capable type of vessel available to immediately deploy worldwide. Europe could also supply counter-mining capabilities, he argued, one area where the U.S. is  “quite constrained.” Germany, Estonia, France, Romania, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and the U.K. together operate roughly 40 counter-mine vessels, he said, compared to America’s four. “There is a role for a wide array of navies to play in this,” said one British defense official, adding the U.K. had begun examining possible options such …

I connected my Obsidian vault to NotebookLM for real — it’s absurdly powerful

I connected my Obsidian vault to NotebookLM for real — it’s absurdly powerful

Finally. An actual way to connect Obsidian and NotebookLM for real. I know you’ve probably watched videos and read articles claiming they’ve connected the two, only for the whole thing to end up being a glorified copy-paste workflow where they move notes from Obsidian into NotebookLM by hand. That’s not a connection. I agree with you. The appeal and the why is obvious. Obsidian is an excellent place to store information, and because it uses plain Markdown files (.md), there’s very little fear involved. You’re not worrying about some company disappearing one day and taking your notes with it. The files are there. They stay there. They’re yours. That removes a huge amount of friction, and it’s a big reason why so many people, myself included, end up with vaults containing thousands of notes and millions of words. NotebookLM, on the other hand, is not a good note-taking app. But it is excellent at turning notes into something usable. Summaries, podcasts, guided breakdowns, and other forms of information that are much easier to digest. It’s …

I do? The rise and rise of the absurdly long engagement

But the next phrase to come out of the well-wisher’s mouth is often a little more logistical: “So, when’s the wedding?” Historically, you could bet on the answer to this sitting somewhere between a year or 16 months on from the proposal. But, today, ceremonies can sit multiple years away from the day the person in love gets down on one knee. One couple living in Los Angeles, Jody Watkins and Nicholas Brucculeri, were betrothed for so long that they even threw a party celebrating one year until they’d walk down the aisle (the halfway point of their engagement) rather than simply throwing the wedding itself. “We have …

I archived years of files in minutes — this Windows tool is absurdly fast

I used to dread organizing my old files. Years of photos, work documents, and random downloads sat scattered across multiple hard drives, and the thought of compressing everything into neat archives felt overwhelming. Every time I considered tackling it, I’d put it off because it seemed like a task that would take hours or even days. Then I discovered PeaZip, and everything changed. The whole job took less time than my lunch break, and I was surprised at how smooth and intuitive the process felt. PeaZip is a free, open-source file archiver that supports over 200 different compression formats, making it incredibly versatile. I can create archives in popular formats like ZIP and 7Z, extract files from obscure formats I’ve never even heard of, and everything happens faster than I expected. After using it to organize years’ worth of accumulated digital clutter, I’m genuinely convinced this tool deserves much more attention than it gets. It turned a dreaded chore into something surprisingly easy and even satisfying. What makes PeaZip really fast Modern compression algorithms that …
