Space storms could switch train signals and cause serious accidents

Trains entering and exiting London’s Clapham Junction Station Jack Taylor/Getty Images A number of electrical systems in the railways of many countries, including the UK, are vulnerable to space weather. In the worst case, a red signal could be turned green, potentially causing a deadly train crash, says Cameron Patterson at Lancaster University in the UK. “You could have disruptions to signalling systems, which are crucial to railway safety,” he says. “We have to prepare for these things now, and getting that message across, I think, is really important.” The sun is constantly blasting out charged particles, as well as light. This solar wind is what causes auroras. Sometimes, the sun emits more material than usual in what’s known as a solar storm, which can affect Earth’s magnetic field. The main danger is to satellites, but solar storms can also affect electrical systems on the ground because any change to a magnetic field can induce unexpected currents, including in railway tracks. That’s a problem because many railway systems rely on direct currents running through sections …

Investigating one of the worst train accidents in Spain’s history : NPR

More than a week after one of the worst train accidents in Spain’s history, many questions remain unanswered, and survivors struggle to move on. EMILY KWONG, HOST: Tomorrow, train conductors in Spain start a three-day strike to call for better safety on the nation’s rail network. This comes after a train collision in January that killed 46 people. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. NPR’s Miguel Macias reports from Seville. MIGUEL MACIAS, BYLINE: It was a regular Sunday afternoon. Many Spaniards were following week 20 of LaLiga, the famous soccer league. Barcelona was playing that night. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED ANNOUNCER: Goal (vocalizing). (SOUNDBITE OF HIGH-PITCHED RHYTHMIC BEEPING) MACIAS: That’s sound from Cadena SER radio. But then, the soccer play-by-play was interrupted by breaking news. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #1: (Speaking Spanish). MACIAS: Over the hours, the worst fears were confirmed as the death toll rose steadily. By the time Spaniards got up the next morning, it was a full-on tragedy. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia spoke at a white nationalist event organized by Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes that caused Republican leaders to denounce her. Last week, Greene’s Twitter account was temporarily suspended by the Elon Musk-headed platform over a tweet with a graphic referring to a “Trans Day of Vengeance,” as she denounced a planned transgender rights rally. And come Tuesday, Greene has announced plans to protest in New York City when former President Donald Trump is expected to be arraigned on an indictment of more than 30 counts, calling the proceedings against him an “unconstitutional WITCH HUNT!” But on Sunday, Greene was featured on CBS’ “60 Minutes” in an interview the long-running show promoted on Twitter with the tease: “Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, nicknamed MTG, isn’t afraid to share her opinions, …

Girls to design Africa’s first private space satellite

Story highlights Africa will launch its first private satellite into space It’s been built by schoolgirls CNN  —  They may be teenagers, but 17-year-old Brittany Bull and 16-year-old Sesam Mngqengqiswa have grand ambitions – to launch Africa’s first private satellite into space in 2019. They are part of a team of high school girls from Cape Town, South Africa, who have designed and built payloads for a satellite that will orbit over the earth’s poles scanning Africa’s surface. Once in space, the satellite will collect information on agriculture, and food security within the continent. Using the data transmitted, “we can try to determine and predict the problems Africa will be facing in the future”, explains Bull, a student at Pelican Park High School. “Where our food is growing, where we can plant more trees and vegetation and also how we can monitor remote areas,” she says. “We have a lot of forest fires and floods but we don’t always get out there in time.” Information received twice a day will go towards disaster prevention. It’s …
