‘Undeterred’: Hungarian investigative journalist faces threats and espionage accusations from Orbán – Spotlight

Gavin Lee is pleased to welcome Szabolcs Panyi, VSquare’s Budapest-based lead investigative editor in charge of Central European investigations and investigative journalist at Direkt36. His reporting into alleged ties between Hungary’s political leadership and Russian state actors triggered an unprecedented response: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán publicly accused him of espionage. According to Panyi, Orbán seeks to discredit independent journalism with false narratives of conspiracies against the government. His work examining communications between Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Sergei Lavrov appears to have triggered an aggressive preemptive effort to undermine both the findings and the journalist behind them. This reflects a deeper transformation within Hungary: the erosion of press freedom, the instrumentalization of state institutions, and the increasing convergence between political power and informational control. Despite intimidation, surveillance, and threats, Panyi says he remains committed to his investigative work, not simply as an act of defiance, but rather as a necessary function of democratic accountability. Fraud accusations fly as Hungarians vote in contentious election – POLITICO

Magyar’s Tisza party has made available its own system for voters to report fraud. Fidesz has followed suit by enabling a hotline and a dedicated email address. “The overwhelming majority of these violations are tied to Tisza. They cry fraud — but they are the ones committing it,” Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör said Sunday morning. “Based on Fidesz submissions, 639 cases of electoral violations have been established, with 74 police reports currently underway,” Dömötör said. Opposition leader Magyar said early Sunday that he would accept the results as long as there is no serious electoral fraud, urging voters to report any irregularities they see, HVG reported. Magyar said that if the election is fair and free then Tisza will win; and he accused Orbán’s government of preparing false flag actions to invalidate results in Tisza-led districts. Orbán’s international spokesman Zoltán Kovács, meanwhile, posted a message on X Sunday morning accusing Tisza of preparing the ground to storm government buildings if they lose.   “Location matters — and this one speaks volumes,” Kovács said about the …

Melton clarified her remarks Thursday on her Instagram Story, stating that Pulisic did not cheat on her and that she had been given “false” information. “I’ve made some comments on a private matter and it’s been taken out of context,” she …

Why False Accusations Are So Disturbing

Why False Accusations Are So Disturbing

There are lies we find acceptable, depending on the circumstances. We may lie to protect someone, to spare a person’s feelings, to bypass complexity in explaining a difficult incident, or to avoid inconvenience. But only one kind of lie is momentous enough to be expressly forbidden in the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not bear false witness. This post focuses on professional and personal false accusations in our daily lives, revealing general psychological principles that may apply to other, more fraught and complicated circumstances—in the justice system, in divorce confrontations, and with bullying. Why are false accusations so disturbing, and what can we do if we are falsely accused? The Just-World Hypothesis Many of us hold the sustaining belief that the world is just and that people get what they deserve. Some of us accept this belief explicitly. Most accept it implicitly. When we see others experiencing misfortune, our belief in a just world reduces anxiety by providing at least a partial explanation. In doing so, it benefits our own psychological well-being. But the just-world hypothesis …

Conflict Between Art-Dealing Brothers Erupts in Assault Accusations

Conflict Between Art-Dealing Brothers Erupts in Assault Accusations

A legal conflict between two art-dealing New York brothers over the names of their respective businesses has escalated from accusations of breach of contract to allegations of physical assault.  An October 21, 2025 complaint filed by Harry Hutchison against Projjal Dutta and Aicon Contemporary says that on April 11, Hutchison was at work on the second floor at 35 Great Jones Street in New York when he was “accosted” by Dutta. “He was assaulted, beaten, and battered” by Dutta, says the complaint, causing “severe and permanent injuries” and “pain, shock, and mental anguish” as well as considerable medical expenses and the loss of the ability to “perform his normal activities.” Related Articles In a response, Projjal Dutta’s attorney states that as the defendant, Dutta “reasonably believed that [Hutchison] was using or was about to use unlawful physical force against Defendant, and if Defendant used force, he used only such force as Defendant reasonably believed to be necessary to protect himself from imminent harm.”  Dutta claims that Hutchison actually “shoved, battered, and assaulted Dutta,” causing his …

Scruggs/NPR The Justice Department has published additional Epstein files related to allegations that President Trump sexually abused a minor after an NPR investigation found dozens of pages were withheld. They include 16 new pages that cover three additional FBI interview summaries with a woman who accused Trump of sexual abuse decades ago when she was a minor. Also included are two pages of an intake form documenting the initial call to the FBI from a friend who relayed the claims. NPR’s investigation previously found 53 pages that appeared to be missing from the public database. Now that these documents are published, there are still 37 pages of records missing from the public database, including notes from the interviews, a law enforcement report and license records. The Justice Department has repeatedly …

These Wallabee Lookalikes from ECCO Are So Comfortable, the Unc Accusations Don’t Bother Me

Have you ever copped something and just stood there in disbelief at how good it is? I had a full-on Wee-Bey-from-The Wire moment when I slipped my feet into a supple, buttery pair of borderline-orthopedic shoes from ECCO.Kollektive, a sub-line of the Danish label ECCO. I picked up these Clarks Wallabee-adjacent shoes, and they have been in my weekly rotation for nearly a year now. They were so good, I doubled back for the loafer version. My future 60-year-old self is already grateful. Ecco.Kollektive Joke Loafer Ecco.Kollektive Joke Lace Shoe Founded in 1963 in Bredebro, Denmark, ECCO has built its reputation on producing some of the softest leather in the game. But it wasn’t until 2022 that the brand launched ECCO.Kollektive (formerly At.Kollektive), a platform that teams up with designers like Peter Do, Kiko Kostadinov, Bianca Saunders, and New York design duo Eckhaus Latta to reinterpret pieces from the archive. This promptly sent me down a rabbit hole exploring the broader Grandpa-core movement happening in footwear. The Joke silhouette is simple and unfussy—the antithesis of …

Labour Faces By Election Accusations Over Fictitious Voting Group

Labour Faces By Election Accusations Over Fictitious Voting Group

Labour is embroiled in a dirty tricks row over a campaign leaflet featuring a “fictitious” tactical voting company. The offending literature has been put through voters’ doors on the eve of Thursday’s crunch Gorton and Denton by-election. It says: “The Tactical Choice says Vote Labour. Based on a new prediction made in the last 24 hours we are recommending voting Labour.” However, no organisation called “Tactical Choice” appears to exist. The leaflet says it is promoted on behalf of Labour candidate Angeliki Stogia. Labour is locked in a three-way battle with the Green Party and Reform UK in the seat. Bookies make the Greens odds-on favourites, followed by Reform and then Labour, for whom Andrew Gwynne won the seat at the 2024 general election with a majority of nearly 13,500. Two real tactical voting organisations – Tactical.Vote and StopTheTories.Vote – have already recommended voters back the Greens to stop Reform winning. The leaflet was sent “on behalf of” Labour candidate Angeliki Stogia. A Green Party spokesperson said: “In a final throw of desperation, Labour have …
