(RNS) — At my daughter’s recent graduation from a liberal arts college in the Northeast, artificial intelligence was repeatedly booed when it appeared in commencement speeches. The reaction did not strike me as simple technophobia. It sounded like moral apprehension. My own young adult children voice many of the same concerns that I hear from colleagues in higher education from across North America and Europe: AI may weaken critical thinking, devalue human creativity, consume staggering quantities of energy and water, exploit poorly paid labor and accelerate a culture already too eager to exchange wisdom for convenience. Likewise, as I help develop AI resources for colleagues in theological education through a Wabash Center grant, the objections are palpable. Faculty worry that students using AI will replace their ability to learn to think. Scholars worry that their work may be absorbed without consent. People of conscience wonder whether refusing these systems is the only ethical response. Then I came to Manila. The name “Magneto” surfaced during a discussion about using artificial intelligence to discover crystal structures for stronger permanent magnets. In Marvel Comics, Magneto can control every form of magnetism. In a chemistry laboratory, the challenge is less theatrical, but no less ambitious. A federally funded team wants to find materials that can generate and maintain magnetic fields stronger than those produced by today’s leading permanent magnets. The effort combines machine learning with hands-on synthesis, testing and materials characterization. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, known as ARPA-E, awarded $2.7 million to a group led by Kirill Kovnir, a chemistry professor at Iowa State University. The researchers aim to identify, make and test new magnetic compounds that can outperform neodymium-iron magnets. Those magnets are currently the strongest permanent magnets available. That barrier, known as the mycomembrane, is not just sturdy. It is selective, allowing some molecules through while keeping others out. For drug developers, that has created a basic problem. A compound may look promising on paper, but if it cannot cross that outer layer, it may never reach its target inside the cell. Earlier this week, a picture circulated online that seemed to show Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell covered in tubes in a hospital bed in a state of extreme distress. The image was shared widely on Reddit and X, but by Wednesday, the revered fact-checking site Snopes had debunked the image, noting that, when checked, the image registers as containing the SynthID watermark designed by Google to identify AI-generated pictures. In short, the watermark worked exactly as it was supposed to in a win for anti-deepfake technology.
