The Weird, Twisting Tale of How China Spied on Alysa Liu and Her Dad

The Weird, Twisting Tale of How China Spied on Alysa Liu and Her Dad

On November 16, 2021, Matthew Ziburis sat in his car in a residential neighborhood in the Bay Area stalking an “enemy,” as he put it. A veteran of both the US Army and Marine Corps, Ziburis had previously served in Iraq. But on this mission, he was working at the behest of China’s government. The targets that autumn day were American citizens: Arthur Liu and his teenage daughter, Alysa. Arthur’s personal story was an exemplar of the American Dream. As a university student, he took part in the 1989 pro-democracy movement in China. After the crackdown at Tiananmen Square that year, he fled to the United States, settling in California. Arthur poured a small fortune and an equal amount of energy into molding Alysa into a figure skating phenom. As a national champion at age 13, she bantered along with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, and was at the time on track to represent America at the Winter Olympics the following year in Beijing. Ziburis was surveilling the Liu home when he called Arthur, …

The Olympic figure skater exuded confidence as she posed on the red carpet, opting for a minimalist yet striking ensemble that perfectly balanced elegance with edge. Her fitted black gown featured a unique halter-style neckline designed to resemble a loosely draped tie, adding a contemporary twist to the timeless silhouette. © Getty Images for iHeartRadioAlysa Liu attends the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards The dress hugged her frame before falling into an asymmetrical hemline, revealing a glimpse of her legs and giving the look a dynamic, fashion-forward finish. She completed the outfit with pointed black heels and a structured black clutch, keeping her accessories understated to let the statement design take center stage. Intrinsic Motivation Helped Alysa Liu Win Gold

Intrinsic Motivation Helped Alysa Liu Win Gold

“I skated every day when I was like 13, 14…Especially as a kid, you don’t really know what you want. Skating feels more like a responsibility or a burden even. Like this is what I have to do.” –Alysa Liu, 20, 2026 Olympic gold medalist, women’s figure skating Alysa Liu has described her early skating career as fueled by extrinsic motivation, or a desire to do something based on external factors like pressure or a reward. People experience extrinsic motivation on a daily basis: An employee stays late at the office in hopes of a bonus or promotion. A student studies hard for a test to get an A and avoid disappointing their parents. This external pressure can be helpful but, when too dominant, can also drain the joy from activities people once loved. In Liu’s case, the urging of her father and coaches provided extrinsic motivation—and it worked. At age 13, she became the youngest U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Champion in history. But at 16, she quit skating abruptly to do things she wanted …

Alysa Liu Effect: ‘Stateside’ Gets Post-Olympic Bump

It’s been nearly two months since PinkPantheress released the music video for the -featured remix of her song “Stateside.” While the pop stars joining forces received plenty of online attention and streams, the song’s been getting a bit of an unexpected bump as of late. U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu, who just took home the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, has been on a viral spree of her own, with the Bay Area native’s Exhibition Gala performance of the “Stateside” remix in particular getting attention online. Liu, 20, gave PinkPantheress and Larsson a shoutout in her routine during the non-medal portion of the games that allows the skaters to have a bit more fun by doing some of the choreography for the song. The obsession with Liu’s performance has managed to make a tangible difference for the pop song, which has been climbing the charts and seeing its streams increasing. Larsson, currently touring the U.S. in support of her glittery Midnight Sun album, performed the song at her Los Angeles tour stop earlier …

Olympic figure-skater Alysa Liu reveals surprising sport she’s trying next

Alysa Liu, 20, has become a household name thanks to her incredible run at the 2026 Winter Olympics, winning Gold in the women’s singles figure skating – marking the first women’s figure skating gold in decades – and the team event at the Winter Olympics.  But now Alysa is back in her hometown of Oakland, near San Francisco, the athlete is considering her next steps. “I heard that surfing was really similar to skating and skiing,” Alysa told People magazine. “In the way that we glide. There’s not many activities in life where you feel the glide, and I recently heard surfing was one of them. So I really want to try that out.” © NurPhoto via Getty ImagesAlysa Liu (USA) competes during the Women Single Skating Figure Skating There are tons of options for Alysa as surfing near San Francisco is diverse and year-round, beginner-friendly spots like Pacifica (Linda Mar) and Bolinas. Golden Girl Alysa Liu Takes a Victory Lap

Golden Girl Alysa Liu Takes a Victory Lap

When I ask the figure skater Alysa Liu to name something she thinks is overrated, she takes a beat, then quips, “Happiness.” It’s not the answer you’d expect from someone who just won two gold medals at the Olympics. Or maybe it is expected, in the sense that 20-year-old Liu—who gives off the vibe of a guru with good hair—clearly has an unusual perspective on success, failure, and everything in between. “I don’t think we really want to be as happy as we say we want to be,” she explains. “We go watch a movie just to be sad. We want to feel all the emotions, and we want to feel them deeply. We think optimizing happiness is how we should live as a society, but really, it’s not. We want to push ourselves. We just want to use our potential.” Liu knows all about potential. She was a child prodigy and the first American female skater to land a quadruple lutz in competition; she won her first national championship at 13, defended her title …
