Bolivia moves closer to state of emergency among large-scale protests

Bolivia moves closer to state of emergency among large-scale protests

Turning to Bolivia now, where conservative President Rodrigo Paz has moved closer to enacting a state of emergency that would allow the military to intervene in demonstrations. For weeks, protesters have constructed roadblocks and taken to the streets demanding the government to tackle Bolivia’s worst economic crisis in decades. Some are urging Paz to step down. The unrest has driven up food and fuel prices, and resulted in a lack of basic goods. Keywords for this article Source link

YA Books Among The Best of the Century So Far

YA Books Among The Best of the Century So Far

Next week, we’ll officially reveal our list of the best young adult books of the century so far. It’s a really wonderful, well-rounded, and inclusive list. But like any list of the “best of,” it will not include everyone’s favorite book. Many beloved authors and titles will not be on the list, and it’s not because they don’t hold up. It’s because a list is a list and has certain confines and constraints to it. We’ve taken “best” to mean both best in the sense that it’s quite enduring literature, as well as influential to the development of the category or genre. The list will officially roll out on Wednesday to our website and it will land here in the newsletter on Friday. The great news is that because YA is a category and not a genre, there have been YA books aplenty on the entries in our “Best Books of the Century So Far” lists. Each of those lists has had at least one YA title and in most cases, more than one YA …

Obsession Among International Competition Lineup

Obsession Among International Competition Lineup

South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival has set an 11-film lineup for the international competition of its 30th edition. Curry Barker’s smash-hit psychological horror Obsession and Jane Schoenbrun’s Cannes Un Certain Regard opener Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma are among the highlights of the selection. The competition — rebranded “Bucheon Choice: World — Features” as part of a programming overhaul for this year’s milestone edition — is the festival’s flagship strand, deciding its top prize, the “Best of Bucheon.” Founded in 1997 and now among Asia‘s largest showcases for horror, fantasy and thriller cinema, BIFAN runs July 2-12 in Bucheon, just west of Seoul. The lineup leans on recent festival-circuit standouts. From Cannes, alongside Schoenbrun’s meta-slasher — which reworks the 1980s summer-camp subgenre through a queer lens — comes Marion Le Coroller’s Species, a Midnight Screening body-horror piece about a high-achieving generation whose anxieties turn physical. From Sundance comes Makoto Nagahisa’s Burn, another portrait of anxious youth, and Adrian Chiarella’s Leviticus, a Midnight entry fusing queer romance and horror through the language …

‘What a joke’: Github Copilot’s new token-based billing spurs consternation among devs

‘What a joke’: Github Copilot’s new token-based billing spurs consternation among devs

The golden age of Microsoft’s Github Copilot appears to be at an end — for the little guy, at least. The company is switching its billing system from a flat subscription rate to a token-usage system that has the potential to bill users at a significantly higher rate. Bigger enterprises may still have the juice for it, but smaller companies and workers could find themselves wondering how they’re supposed to balance the monthly budget. The changes, which will take place June 1, mean that users will charged based on how many tokens they burn through as they work instead of a low flat rate based on requests. Some developers with financial whiplash have taken to places like Reddit and X to bemoan what — in many cases — appears to be a drastic escalation in cost. “What a joke,” one Redditor recently wrote, claiming that, while they currently only pay around $29 per month, the new rate will balloon their costs to nearly $750 a month. “This new usage model is just stupidly expensive. I’m adjusting …

A Trivia Champ, 2 Brothers and a Helpful Grandfather Were Among Victims of Washington Tank Collapse

A Trivia Champ, 2 Brothers and a Helpful Grandfather Were Among Victims of Washington Tank Collapse

Crews have recovered the remains of one more victim of a massive chemical tank rupture at a paper mill in Washington state, authorities said Friday, leaving two workers still unaccounted for. Among the 11 workers killed in the disaster were two brothers who worked there together, a trivia champ and an electrician who would help his farmer neighbors cut hay. A tank containing more than 500,000 gallons (1.9 million liters) of a mixture used to break down wood for making paper collapsed Tuesday morning at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. in Longview, a city of 40,000 along the Columbia River. The collapse expelled a flood of caustic chemicals powerful enough to blow out building walls and overturn pickup trucks at the site. The liquid, called white liquor, causes severe burns on contact and lung damage if vapors are inhaled. What happens during the recovery process The recovery of victims has been slow and methodical, complicated by the dangers posed by the remaining chemicals and other industrial hazards, said Matt Amos, Longview fire battalion chief. Six …

Three community kitchen workers among eight killed by Israel in Gaza | Gaza News

Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 871 Palestinians since the so-called ceasefire began last year. Published On 17 May 202617 May 2026 Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip have killed at least eight Palestinians, including three in Deir el-Balah, and others in Khan Younis and Beit Lahiya. Sunday’s attack on the central city of Deir el-Balah targeted a community kitchen and all three victims were community kitchen workers, according to Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from Gaza City. “This shows that Israel is not only targeting people, but also organisations serving the community across Gaza,” Khoudary added. Reacting to the same attack, Hamas said it was “a deliberate war crime and a renewed scene of the ongoing genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip”. “This occurs amid an unjustified international silence and inaction that emboldens the occupation to continue its massacres, in blatant disregard for all international values, norms, and laws,” said the armed group’s statement. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry’s statistics published on Sunday, Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed …
