Spiritually burned out? Tish Harrison Warren and some ancient monks have advice.

(RNS) — Tish Harrison Warren had everything going for her. A job as a priest at a church she loved. A family she adored. Good friends. And a dream gig writing about faith for The New York Times. And yet, she, like millions of Americans, was exhausted. And God had gone silent. “I would sit to pray, but it felt as though the line had gone dead. I did not feel a sense of God’s nearness. I didn’t feel much of anything at all,” writes Warren in her new book, “What Grows in Weary Lands,” out Tuesday (May 12) from Penguin Random House. “And I’d begin to think, is anyone there?” Warren, who is ordained in the Anglican Church in North America, found a way forward with the help of some friends and advice from the desert fathers and mothers, a group of ancient spiritual guides who fled into the desert to find God more than 1,500 years ago. Their advice, Warren writes, helped her build a sturdier spirituality for taking on the modern world. …

Sam Allberry exits church, Keller Center over relationship with man

(RNS) — Sam Allberry, a pastor and apologist who advocates for celibacy as the faithful path for LGBTQ+ Christians, has been “disqualified from gospel ministry” following an “inappropriate relationship with an adult man in 2022,” according to a statement from elders at Immanuel Nashville, a nondenominational church where he has served as an associate pastor since 2023. The Nashville, Tennessee, church’s statement, first reported by Protestia, said church elders were first made aware of the relationship between Allberry and another man in spring 2024, and based on “information available at the time and the posture of Sam and the other party,” the church determined it wasn’t disqualifying behavior. But after receiving new information this January, per the statement, the elders reopened an investigation into Allberry’s actions. “(W)hile the relationship did not go as far as it could have, Sam’s conduct constituted a serious breach of trust and a failure to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel,” the statement said. “The Elders are unanimous in their decision that Sam is currently disqualified from gospel ministry. …

Church trial date set for ACNA Archbishop Steve Wood

(RNS) — Archbishop Steve Wood, who leads the Anglican Church in North America, will face a church trial beginning on July 20, according to an announcement from the court Tuesday (April 21). He has been accused of sexual harassment, bullying and plagiarism and faces three church charges: alleged violation of ordination vows, conduct giving cause for “scandal or offense” and sexual immorality. The Tuesday announcement also revealed that Wood filed a motion to dismiss the case. The court will hear arguments on that motion beginning on May 7. “We are grateful to the Court for its diligent work in this matter,” said the Rt. Rev. Julian Dobbs, who serves as dean of the province, in the statement. “I ask that our clergy and lay members join me in earnest prayer that God, in His wisdom and providence, would bring a just and righteous resolution, that His Church would be preserved in truth and unity, and that all parties involved would know His grace.” Wood was inhibited, or temporarily suspended from his ministry, in mid-November, days …
