Tim Cook Calls Apple Maps Launch His ‘First Really Big Mistake’ as CEO

Outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook has named the botched 2012 launch of Apple Maps as his “first really big mistake” in the role, according to a Bloomberg report covering the town hall meeting that was held Tuesday with his recently announced successor, John Ternus. The Maps app launched with mislabeled landmarks, faulty directions, and a user experience that fell well short of Google Maps at the time. “The product wasn’t ready, and we thought it was because we were testing more of local kind of stuff,” Cook told staff. Reflecting on the debacle, Cook said it was “valuable,” noting that he expressed regret to users at the time and suggested they use competing navigation apps instead. From the report: “We apologized for it, and we said, ‘Go use these other apps. They’re better than ours.’ And that was some humble pie,” Cook said. “But it was the right thing for our users. And so it’s an example of keeping the user at the center of the decisions that we made.” Cook added: “Now we’ve got …

Apple Maps Ads Move Closer to Launch With iOS 26.5 Beta 2

Apple Maps Ads Move Closer to Launch With iOS 26.5 Beta 2

With the second beta of iOS 26.5, Apple is continuing to prepare for ads in the Apple Maps app. There’s a new splash screen in the app that says it will display ads based on approximate location, current search terms, or a view of the map when searching. Ads will also be shown in the “Suggested Places” section that was added in the first beta. Apple says that advertising information is not linked to an Apple Account to preserve user privacy, so ads viewed and interacted with will not be associated with an Apple Account. Data is not collected or stored by Apple and not shared with third parties, according to Apple. Signs of ads in the Maps app were spotted in the first beta, but iOS 26.5 testers could start seeing ads with the second beta. It’s not yet clear if Apple has just implemented the splash screen, or if ads are going to begin showing up in the near future. Apple announced plans to introduce ads for the Maps app back in March, …

Apple to Introduce Ads in Apple Maps as Part of Services Revenue Push

Apple is planning to include ads in Apple Maps search results as soon as this summer, reports Bloomberg. Apple is aiming to earn more money from its services division, and it could announce plans for Maps ads as early as this month. Ads in ‌Apple Maps‌ will be similar to ads in Google Maps. Retailers and brands will be able to bid for ads associated with search categories. Starbucks, for example, might display an ad when someone searches for coffee. Restaurants will be able to bid for search terms, and the highest bidder’s ads will appear at the top of the results for a given term. Apple plans to display ads in the iPhone app, Mac app, iPad app, and on the web. We first started hearing about ads in the Maps app last year, but now the feature is nearing completion. Revenue from ads could make up for current and future changes to the App Store that could limit the money that Apple earns, or from the loss of any search deals with Google …

EU Spares Apple Maps and Apple Ads

EU Spares Apple Maps and Apple Ads

The European Commission today said it found that Apple Maps and Apple Ads should not be designated as “gateways” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act. In a press release, the European Commission said that Apple Maps and Apple Ads are not big enough individually to qualify as “important gateways between business users and end users,” and therefore the platforms will not be subject to stricter regulations. This follows an investigation that began in late November. “This assessment is based on a number of considerations, including that Apple Maps has a relatively low overall usage rate in the EU, and that Apple Ads has very limited scale in the online advertising sector in the EU,” the European Commission said. Apple as a whole is still considered a “gatekeeper” under the Digital Markets Act. Apple Ads and Apple Maps will have more in common soon, as Apple reportedly plans to start showing ads within Apple Maps search results as soon as this year. Note: Due to the political or social nature of the discussion regarding this topic, …
