Phoenix Seminary to be acquired by Biola University

Phoenix Seminary to be acquired by Biola University

(RNS) — After three decades of independent operations, Phoenix Seminary is set to be acquired by the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. The acquisition will elevate Talbot as the second-largest interdenominational seminary in the country and, with campuses just outside Phoenix and Los Angeles, the leading site of theological education within the two largest metropolitan areas west of the Rocky Mountains. Founded in 1988, Phoenix Seminary is a nondenominational conservative evangelical Christian educational institution. Located in Scottsdale, Arizona, the institution’s faculty includes professor emeritus Wayne Grudem, who is best known for his seminal work, “Systematic Theology,” and for co-founding the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, which promotes a complementarian approach to marriage and gender. Ed Stetzer, the dean of Talbot School of Theology located in La Mirada, California, told Religion News Service that Phoenix Seminary’s board of directors reached out to Biola University to initiate the acquisition of its assets in early January. Biola University’s board of trustees unanimously approved the plan. In a comment to Christianity Today, Phoenix Seminary chairman Ron Ogan emphasized …

DOJ Opens Investigation Into Suspected Race-Based Practices At Arizona State University

Authored by Kimberly Hayek via The Epoch Times, The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has launched a Title VI investigation into diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices at Arizona State University (ASU), one of the country’s largest public universities. View of the campus of Arizona State University, a public research university located in Phoenix, Arizona. Shutterstock Wednesday’s announcement comes after recent viral videos that appear to show university personnel participating in or concealing the handling of distinguishing students by race, color, or national origin. Federal officials noted the videos raised the prospect that ASU may have violated civil rights protections while benefiting from considerable taxpayer support. “No student should be denied access to opportunities or resources because of race, color, or national origin,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s (DOJ’s) Civil Rights Division said. “The United States is committed to keeping universities free of unlawful discrimination – especially when they try to hide illegal conduct to avoid oversight and compliance.” Federal law does not allow discrimination on the basis of …

Arizona Supreme Court denies prosecutor appeal against sending fake elector case back to grand jury

Kris Mayes, Arizona’s attorney general, speaks to members of the media outside the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025. Eric Lee | Bloomberg | Getty Images The Arizona Supreme Court has denied a prosecutor’s appeal of an order that the state’s fake elector case against President Donald Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and others over the 2020 presidential election be sent back to a grand jury. The decision released Thursday marks another setback for Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes as she struggles to push the sprawling case through the courts. Mayes’ office said it will again present the case in its entirety to a grand jury rather than end the prosecution. Her office declined to comment further on the court’s decision. The ruling came after similar cases in Michigan and Georgia were dismissed by the courts and a special prosecutor dropped a federal case in late 2024 that charged Trump with conspiring to overturn the 2020 election. Cases related to …

Frankie Valli Cancels the Remainder of the Four Seasons’ Farewell Tour, Citing Health Concerns

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Frankie Valli, whose legendary falsetto defines the sound of the 1960s rock group the Four Seasons, has cancelled the remainder of the band’s 2026 tour dates, citing health concerns. “I’m so sorry to disappoint the folks who have purchased tickets to my shows, but I have decided to take the rest of the year off from touring to focus on my health,” the 92-year-old singer wrote on social media Friday. Valli, the frontman and only original member still performing with the Four Seasons, launched an extended farewell tour billed “The Last Encores” in October 2023. Shows scheduled for April of this year were rescheduled to dates in summer and fall. Now, all eight performances remaining for 2026 in cities from Scottsdale, Arizona, to Detroit have been called off entirely. The Four Seasons found fame in the 1960s, but the band’s hits –- from “Sherry” to “December 1963 (Oh What a Night)” –- span decades. The Four Seasons sold 100 million records worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall …

Kalshi and Arizona regulators seek paused appeal while Ninth Circuit weighs cases

Kalshi and Arizona regulators seek paused appeal while Ninth Circuit weighs cases

Kalshi and Arizona gaming regulators want the Ninth Circuit to slow down an appeal that could help define how far federal commodities law reaches into state gambling enforcement. In a joint filing submitted May 27, both sides asked the court to pause briefing while several related appeals already pending before the same circuit are decided. These focus on whether the Commodity Exchange Act gives the Commodity Futures Trading Commission exclusive authority over event contracts offered through federally regulated exchanges. The parties told the court that any pending appeals “could bear on the questions at issue in this appeal” and argued that waiting for decisions would help produce briefs “that will be most useful to the Court.” Under the current schedule, Kalshi’s opening brief is due June 8. The proposed pause …

Charles Spencer and Cat Jarman have said yes. This is the fourth marriage for the ninth Earl Spencer, brother of the late Lady Diana. Spencer, 61, wed Jarman, 43, on Friday, confirming the event in a joint statement. “We both feel incredibly fortunate to have been on a path from being colleagues to friendship to deep love and an unbreakable bond,” they said in remarks shared with People. “Every stage of our relationship has been accompanied by laughter and we share the same passion for life.” Earl Spencer split from his third wife, Karen Gordon, in 2024. “I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren,” he told the Mail on Sunday at the time. “I wish Karen every happiness in the future.” He first married model Victoria Lockwood in 1989, welcoming four children: daughter Kitty, now 34, twins Amelia and Eliza, 33, …

Arizona sports contracts lawsuit against Kalshi paused while Ninth Circuit appeals continue

A legal fight over prediction markets and state gambling authority is now on hold in Arizona while federal appeals judges weigh several related cases. Kalshi, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Justice Department, and Arizona regulators jointly asked a federal judge Friday (May 15) to pause litigation involving sports-event contracts offered on federally regulated exchanges. The request was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona and asks Judge Michael T. Liburdi to freeze proceedings until the Ninth Circuit rules in at least one pending appeal tied to prediction-market platforms. They are suing Arizona Attorney General Kristin K. Mayes and Arizona Department of Gaming Director Jackie Johnson over whether the state can enforce gambling laws against contracts …

Children in Arizona are going hungry because of Trump’s food stamp cuts

Children in Arizona are going hungry because of Trump’s food stamp cuts

The Arizona Department of Economic Security, which administers federally funded SNAP benefits, acknowledged the drop in people receiving food stamps, including some who should be getting them. The state had to adjust to the new eligibility requirements under last year’s law and has also been stepping up efforts to reduce its payment error rate to avoid federal penalties starting in 2027. Doing so, though, has required additional documentation for each case and strained an already overstretched workforce, leading to delays in approving benefits. “We acknowledge that many families are awaiting critical assistance, and our teams remain committed to finding every possible solution to minimize elevated wait times. Processing delays are driven in large part by the requirements in H.R. 1,” Department of Economic Security spokesman Brett Bezio said in a statement, referring to the legislative title for Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” The White House said the law is intended to reduce federal spending and “restores basic work requirements, prioritizes American citizens, and implements reasonable cost-sharing measures with states to crack down on waste, fraud, and …
