A Judge Is Protecting Youth Gender Care in Kansas While a Settlement in Texas Attacks It

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas judge on Friday protected access to gender-affirming care for transgender minors as the nation’s largest children’s hospital moved to restrict such care in Texas, buckling under pressure from the Trump administration. Texas Children’s Hospital, based in Houston, said in a statement that it had agreed to a legal settlement “to protect our resources from endless and costly litigation.” The hospital, which serves more than 1 million patients a year, stopped providing hormone treatments for transgender children and teens in 2022, a year before the state banned such care, but still faced a yearslong investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office. Paxton and the Trump administration said the hospital would pay Texas $10 million and would be required to open what he called a “detransition clinic” to “reverse the damage” from gender-affirming care, which he’s described as child abuse. Most major medical groups say access to gender-affirming care as important for people with gender dysphoria. Transgender teens, parents and providers have described it …

Israel kills seven in Lebanon, agrees ‘ceasefire’ extension at talks in US | Israel attacks Lebanon News

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend a ceasefire that was due to expire on Sunday by 45 days, the US said, after direct talks in Washington DC concluded, despite ongoing Israeli attacks and ceasefire violations in Lebanon. “The April 16 cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress,” said US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott on Friday, after the second day of talks concluded. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Pigott, who described the talks as “highly-productive”, said that political negotiations would continue on June 2 and June 3, while a “security track” would begin on May 29 at the Pentagon, involving Lebanese and Israeli military delegations. “We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,” Pigott said. The latest talks were the third round of direct negotiations between the two sides this year, but few details have emerged of the specifics that were discussed in the latest …

Crabby 82-Year-Old Politician Attacks 10-Year-Old Child for Thinking Electric Cars Are Cool

Crabby 82-Year-Old Politician Attacks 10-Year-Old Child for Thinking Electric Cars Are Cool

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech North Carolinian congresswoman Virginia Foxx has never shied away from regressive takes. Over her many decades in politics, the 82-year-old representative has opposed everything from the release of the Epstein files and abortion for sexual assault survivors to legalized gay marriage and even aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina. But as flagged by the Daily Beast, the octogenarian politician’s latest broadside may take the cake. When a 10-year-old child wrote her a letter expressing support for electric cars, Foxx didn’t agree to disagree — instead, she fulminated at the poor kid in a response that sounds more like a late night Donald Trump post on social media than a polite rejoinder to an engaged member of the public. “Your request that ‘the federal government should give a $5,000 tax rebate for all new electric car purchases’ means that the federal government must take that money out of the pockets of hardworking people who may not have the means …

Sánchez backs Barcelona football star Yamal against attacks from Israel – POLITICO

“I expect a great and respected club like FC Barcelona to distance itself from these statements and make it unequivocally clear that there is no place for incitement or for support of terrorism,” Katz said in a post on X.  Sánchez hit back by saying the teenager had “only expressed the solidarity with Palestine felt by millions of Spaniards. Another reason to be proud of him.”  The new spat follows last month’s bid by Spain and three other EU members to end the bloc’s association agreement with Israel, which was ultimately rejected by other foreign ministers. Sánchez is the most vocal EU leader in condemning Israel, saying at a political rally in April that “a government that violates international law or the principles of the EU cannot be its partner.”  The 18-year-old Yamal is expected to be one of Spain’s key players during this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America. Iran warns the US against attacks on its oil tankers and other ships but ceasefire appears to hold

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy on Saturday warned that any attack on Iranian oil tankers or commercial vessels would be met with a “heavy assault” on one of the U.S. bases in the region and enemy ships, even as a tenuous ceasefire appeared to be holding. Iranian state TV reported the warning a day after the United States struck two Iranian oil tankers, casting doubt on the month-old ceasefire that the U.S. has insisted is still in effect. The U.S. military said the tankers were trying to breach its blockade of Iran’s ports. Meanwhile Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy’s regional headquarters, said it arrested dozens of people it alleged had links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Washington awaits Iran’s response to its latest proposal for a deal to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping and roll back Tehran’s disputed nuclear program. And Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow’s proposal to take enriched uranium from Iran to help negotiate a settlement remains on the table. Bahrain says …
