Man with axe arrested at mosque in ‘serious security incident’ | UK News

A man has been arrested after allegedly entering a mosque in Manchester with an axe in his bag during Ramadan prayers. The suspect, a white man in his 50s, went into Manchester Central Mosque in the Victoria Park area around 8.30pm on Tuesday, police said. He was wearing hi-vis clothing and was said to have had an axe, a knife and a hammer with him. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said no one was injured and no threats were made. The force said it had not declared it a terrorist incident, but was working with counter-terrorism police to investigate. The suspect is being held on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and class B drugs. Police are searching for a second man, a black male, who is believed to have been with the suspect but left before officers arrived. The chairman of the mosque said volunteers had kept the suspect talking until police arrived and arrested him. David Lammy is facing a revolt over plans to slash jury trials (Image: Getty) David Lammy is facing a growing Labour revolt over his plan to axe jury trials as it emerged the first judge-only cases could be heard in two years. The Justice Secretary confirmed he will slash half of jury trials, dramatically increase the number of video court hearings and roll out the use of Artificial Intelligence. Mr Lammy took the fight to the rebels, claiming critics were using “old-fashioned” and “male” arguments amid a record Crown Courts backlog of almost 80,000. But Labour’s Karl Turner blasted: “His proposal to curtail the right to trial by jury across swathes of serious criminal cases is not acceptable. There is deep and growing concern across Parliament that the plan to do away with jury trials is unnecessary and there is no evidential link between the juries and the cause of the backlog. “How much time would actually be saved through the reduction of a right to trial by jury? What are the unintended consequences of …

David Lammy is overhauling the justice system (Image: Getty) Crime victims could continue to face agonising delays to trials for another 10 years, a justice minister has admitted. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is planning to axe thousands of jury trials in a bid to reduce the crown court backlog. But courts minister Sarah Sackman has admitted it could take up to a decade for the number of “outstanding cases” to fall to a “sustainable level”. And Ms Sackman confirmed suspects currently awaiting a trial after being charged could face a judge-only hearing, with the changes set to apply retrospectively. A staggering 78,329 trials are waiting to be heard, Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures show. This is projected to rise to 88,700 by September and 108,700 by September 2028. In a letter published on Wednesday, Ms Sackman told the Justice Select Committee: “The Deputy Prime Minister and I have been clear that we need to present to Parliament a package of measures that can have a significant and reliable sitting day saving. “Our objective is …
