A former London gang leader who was described as a “dangerous” criminal and nicknamed “The General” was rehomed in Newport to force him to cut ties with his previous life but he still can’t stay out of trouble. Joland Giwa, 36, was caught with around £17,000 worth of drugs at a property where he was living in Risca near Newport, a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard on Friday. The former gang leader once led an 80-strong south London gang who led a campaign of terror for several years in Croydon. In 2017 the gang was behind a surge in violence on the streets of Croydon which saw stabbings, shootings and murder. A London judge said there was a “significant risk” of him reoffending and the decision was made to send him to south Wales and cut him from his criminal convictions in London. Lately, more restaurants and bars have been asking patrons to refrain from using their phones, and it’s definitely sparked some debate. Their goal is to bring back real conversations, but not everyone is on board. According to a report from Axios, there are a handful of states with restaurants and bars restricting phone usage for customers. There are even some places that are asking patrons to lock up their phones so they aren’t even tempted to pull them out. The problem that has arisen, however, centers around safety concerns, especially for women. Restaurants and bars are starting to ban phones. Axios found that 11 states now have individual restaurants or bars with some form of phone restriction or a “digital-detox incentive.” For example, Washington, D.C., has the most venues in the U.S., with five restaurants and bars that have this policy. Others can be found in Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York, and Texas. It’s not just independent bars and restaurants, either. I have never managed to score a reservation to Bar Cecil, the restaurant that opened in April 2021 as an homage to Sir Cecil Beaton, the famously flamboyant British photographer, designer, author and all-around Renaissance man who died in 1980.
