Cable, Gilts Under Pressure As UK PM Starmer On The Brink As Rebellion Spreads

UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, is on the brink this morning as The Telegraph reports that six Cabinet Ministers reportedly call on him privately to quit and the number of MPs on the record saying he must go reaches 84. The Telegraph learnt before the meeting that six ministers – Shabana Mahmood, John Healey, Ed Miliband, Lisa Nandy, Yvette Cooper and Wes Streeting – had been expected to demand Sir Keir’s resignation. However the Prime Minister did not give Ministers a chance to speak against him and instead set out his case on why he should remain in office. He told Ministers: “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered. The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.” He then spent the rest of the hour discussing policy issues and the impact of the Iran war. Rebecca Long-Bailey, who served under Jeremy Corbyn and was sacked from Sir Keir’s shadow cabinet …

Carrick deserves full-time job after guiding Man Utd to brink of Champions League

Yet, remarkably, the goal was the signal for Brentford to take hold of the game. It is no exaggeration to say they should have scored three times after going behind and Andrews, the impressive Brentford head coach, was crestfallen their endeavour was not rewarded. A better connection from Igor Thiago at the back post, when Keane Lewis-Potter zipped a ball across the six-yard box, would have resulted in a Brentford equaliser in the 23rd minute and then, in the next attack, Michael Kayode was denied by Senne Lammens’s outstretched arm. The worst was still to come. Thiago, one of the players of the season, found himself clean through on Lammens after a ball from Ouattara but, rather than shooting, he hesitated, took a touch then slipped over. It prompted one of those growls to tumble out of the Stretford End, a wake-up call that ideas needed to be bucked up. When Ayden Heaven slid in to dispossess Thiago a couple of moments later, the decibels were cranked up further. This could not continue. And it …

Supermaket with 300 stores on brink of administration | UK | News

A major supermarket chain with 300 stores is on the brink of administration, with thousands of jobs at risk. Southern Co-op is scrambling to secure a merger deal over fears it could go bust. The British supermarket, which operates more than 300 food stores, funeral homes and coffee shops across southern England, said three consecutive years of financial losses had pushed it to the edge of insolvency. Over 300 outlets all face potential closure unless a merger with the national Co-op Group proceeds. Southern Co-op’s chair and chief executive wrote a letter to members on April 22, warning that the proposed merger represents their best chance of survival. Janet Paraskeva and Ben Stimson issued a statement, saying: “Southern Co-op has made losses for the past three years. “Over the last year, trading has become more difficult, and we have relied on ongoing support from our banks and suppliers to continue operating. That support cannot now be increased within the time available.” Crunch meetings will be held on May 6 and May 21, where members will …

The rising cost of fertilizer and fuel prices is pushing some farmers to the brink : NPR

Sledge Taylor, 73, walks his corn fields just outside Como, Miss. on Friday, April 17, 2026. The corn stalks are currently between vegetative stages known as V3 and V5, normally when Taylor would be applying nitrogen fertilizer. But he said he may not do it this year because of the cost of fertilizer. Jay Marcano for NPR hide caption toggle caption Jay Marcano for NPR COMO, Miss. – On a bright, dry Friday morning in Panola County in the Mississippi Delta, Sledge Taylor did the same thing he’s done every morning for the last 53 years — the same thing his father did every morning, and his father before him. He walked his fields. The little green stalks of corn he grows on about 4,000 acres are between vegetative stages known as V3 and V5, tallied by the number of visible leaf collars on the stems. It’s a critical stage for determining future yields, when the plant’s roots claw deeper into the dark alluvial soil. The Mississippi River built the Delta over thousands of years, …

Trump breaks silence on ‘helping out’ major airline on brink of plunging into liquidation | World | News

Donald Trump commented on a major airline facing difficulties, suggesting he wouldn’t be against a merger or even seeing the federal government helping it out. The US President said the government could help Spirits Airlines, which is struggling and facing liquidation. Speaking to CNBC’s, Mr Trump said: “I don’t mind mergers. I think I’d love somebody to buy Spirit, as an example. You know, Spirit’s in trouble. … Maybe the federal government should help that one out.” Spirit has already sought government aid from Mr Trump administration in recent days, according to people familiar with the matter, as reported by CNBC, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is planning to meet with several discount carriers to discuss the impact higher fuel is having on airlines. Jet fuel costs, skyrocketing after the war in Iran, played a part in the difficulties recently experienced by Spirit Airlines too. Quoting JPMorgan, CNBC said that if fuel stays at about $4.60 a gallon this year, Spirit’s forecast operating margin for the 2026 fiscal year would range from negative 7 per …
