Dealers Doing Brisk Business at ‘More Intentional’ Fair

Tears of joy are not the first thing you expect to hear about at art fairs, but that was the order of the day for Tennessee artist Annie Brito Hodgin at Thursday’s VIP preview at the thirteenth edition of Expo Chicago (April 9–12), where she is showing her paintings with Red Arrow Gallery. “It’s the artist’s first time showing outside Nashville and her first time showing at an art fair, and she’s here with us,” gallery director Ashley Layendecker told ARTnews. Raised in a Southern Baptist fundamentalist Christian culture, the artist paints surreal modern interpretations of Biblical passages, populated entirely with versions of herself. “She works out of her kitchen and is raising three children,” Layendecker added.  Related Articles The tears came when it was revealed that one of her paintings went to the Bennett Collection (founded by Steven Alan Bennett and Elaine Melotti Schmidt, retired from careers in corporate law and education), which created a fund to buy works from the fair by women-identifying artists painting women in a realist style; acquisitions will go …

Traditional Chinese exercise routine reduces blood pressure as much as brisk walking

The Baduanjin exercise has been practiced for hundreds of years as a way to achieve relaxation and improve mental and physical health through gentle movement. Recently, scientists completed a large clinical study to evaluate whether performing Baduanjin has any cardiovascular health benefits. According to the results, researchers found that practicing Baduanjin reduces blood pressure to a similar degree as brisk walking in people with high blood pressure. The reduction in blood pressure occurs after three months of practicing Baduanjin. The reduction is also sustained for 12 months following cessation of practice. These findings were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. High blood pressure remains one of the greatest modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Physicians often recommend exercise to lower blood pressure. However, many patients find it difficult to maintain a regular exercise regimen due to the need for specialized equipment, gym access, or structured exercise programs. If you sit a lot, an expert says just five minutes of brisk walking may make a real difference to longevity

New research published in The Lancethas reported that there could be longevity benefits for those willing to add just five-minute pockets of movement to their day. Lead author Professor Ulf Ekelund, a specialist in physical activity and health, tells Fit&Well that there was a hole in our current understanding of the relationship between movement and mortality. While we know the basics, that sedentary people are at a higher risk of all-cause mortality than those who are active, Ekelund explained that his study focuses specifically on the impact of minor changes. You may like “This is the first study examining how small changes in moderate intensity physical activity may prevent premature deaths in the total population if all individuals adhere to these changes,” he says. The meta-analysis drew on studies that used activity trackers to collect minute-by-minute data, making it more accurate than older studies, which tend to rely on self-reported data. And while previous studies have estimated the number of deaths averted if inactive people met the World Health Organization (WHO) physical activity guidelines—which recommend …
