At 88, peter campus Swaps Youthful Ego for Late-Style Modesty

A death stare greets me as I enter peter campus’s exhibition at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. A man looks right at me, dead on—or at the camera, really. His harsh eyebrows, thick yet articulated, add to the intensity. I check the video’s title and learn that it’s a death stare of a different kind: Head of a Man with Death on His Mind (1978). The man swallows occasionally, blinks infrequently. Set against a white background, his face is nevertheless lit as if in chiaroscuro, recorded in black-and-white. Is he thinking about his own death, that of a loved one, or just general grief? At one point, his eyes gaze downward, as if he is looking toward hell or the grave, or is simply sad. It’s oddly arresting, given that nothing much is going on. Related Articles Campus made this work in his early 40s. I can’t help but think about how many of his peers—how much of the first generation of video artists—are gone now, and how death might be on his mind …

Up to 1,600 cats find a haven on Beirut university campus : NPR

A cat hangs out on American University of Beirut campus grounds. A code of conduct stipulates students are not allowed to mistreat the animals. Tamara Saade for NPR hide caption toggle caption Tamara Saade for NPR BEIRUT — There are several things that make the American University of Beirut unique. Among them are its 160-year-old liberal arts education in the center of the Middle East. There is its seaside location in a cosmopolitan capital. But hands down, the college’s most unusual feature is its campus cats — as many as 1,600 of them. The cat rescue started during the Lebanese civil war in the 1980s when animals sought shelter from street fighting in the 1980s on its campus in the downtown Hamra area. It has evolved into a continuing program to care for cats abandoned during more recent wars. The American University of Beirut campus in Lebanon offers refuge to as many as 1,600 cats. Multnomah gave up its campus in a failed takeover. Alums want it back.

Multnomah gave up its campus in a failed takeover. Alums want it back.

(RNS) — Multnomah University was facing the end of its days. “We have cried, prayed, and walked a difficult path together as a community,” the Christian school’s president, Jessica Taylor, said in a 2023 video. “Without God’s provision, there was no path forward.” Then, in the fall of 2023, Taylor announced a new “transformative partnership” with Jessup University, a similarly nondenominational evangelical Christian school in Northern California. As part of the agreement, Multnomah would give all its assets to Jessup, including its campus in Portland, Oregon. In return, Jessup would turn the Multnomah campus into a branch location. Jessup would also serve Multnomah students until 2027. When the partnership was announced, leaders at Multnomah said they were hoping to avoid a “catastrophic university closure,” like the kind that occurred at Concordia University in Portland, a Lutheran school that shut down in 2020. The deal with Jessup ensured Multnomah’s existing students could graduate, and it kept a Christian college in Portland.  “Multnomah University is making a significant step to ensure our legacy lives on for generations …

Conservative college students don’t face greater barriers to campus resources

Conservative college students don’t face greater barriers to campus resources

A new study suggests that assertions of widespread bias against conservative students in American higher education may be unfounded regarding access to administrative resources. The research indicates that university administrators are just as responsive to requests from conservative students as they are to liberal ones. These findings were published in the journal Political Behavior. The motivation for this research stems from a documented decline in public trust toward colleges and universities. This erosion of confidence is particularly pronounced among Republicans, who increasingly view higher education as hostile to conservative viewpoints. Jessica Khan, an assistant professor of American government at Northwest Florida State College, designed this study to test whether these perceptions reflect reality. Khan sought to determine if political ideology acts as a barrier for students trying to access basic campus services. “There is substantial debate in popular and academic circles concerning allegations of liberal bias in higher education, but the catalyst prompting the studies in this publication was a meeting that Turning Point USA held at Florida State University when I was a PhD …

With limits on campus protests, quieter vigils are the growing voice of protest

With limits on campus protests, quieter vigils are the growing voice of protest

NEW YORK (RNS) — Judith Lynn, who has lived close to Columbia University for two decades, marched beside pro-Palestinian students when campus protest against the war in Gaza erupted two years ago. “I was right there yelling with those beautiful students, but to see that squashed,” she said. “I’ve been finding ways to go beyond the protest.”  She has found her voice, she said, in silent vigils. On either side of Columbia University’s main entrance on Broadway and 116th Street in Manhattan, Lynn, 74, stands with a large group dressed in black. Some of the group hand flyers to the steady foot traffic in and out of the campus. Others hold a steady gaze into the middle distance. On this day, Lynn clutches a black-and-white portrait of Yunseo Chung, an international student from Korea detained by immigration agents in March.  RELATED: The encampments are gone, but students who protested for Palestinians vow to continue “It is solemn and elegant,” Lynn said. “It is a direct statement, but because it is silent it is very powerful.”  …

How ‘campus climate’ affects students’ attitudes to people of different religions

How ‘campus climate’ affects students’ attitudes to people of different religions

This year’s new university students are settling into life on campuses often notable for their diversity – and that includes in religion. Over 33,000 Buddhist students started university in the UK in 2023-24, for instance, alongside 769,220 Christian and 37,520 Sikh students. Universities have a role to play in helping their students relate to others of different religious backgrounds, especially at a time of concern over antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. Our research has pinpointed some key things universities can do that make a positive difference. We can also highlight the things they shouldn’t do. We surveyed 1,000 students twice, one year apart. We wanted to investigate how the university environment, or campus climate, influences how students engage with other religions and worldviews. To assess this we asked students how far they agreed with statements such as “there are people of other faiths or beliefs whom I admire”, “I try to build relationships with people who hold religious or non-religious beliefs that I disagree with”, and “my faith or beliefs are strengthened by relationships with …

Where to eat near campus: UCLA, USC, Loyola, Long Beach, Northridge

Graduation season is upon Los Angeles. Parents and extended family members are traveling in for the occasion, while students are wrapping up finals and preparing to walk across the stage into a new, postgraduate phase of life. This year, due to nationwide pro-Palestine protests on college campuses, some of those annual celebrations look a little different. Citing security concerns, USC canceled its mainstage commencement and held a smaller ceremony at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum last week; attendance was limited to graduates, their families and loved ones. At UCLA, a pro-Palestine encampment was destroyed with more than 200 protesters arrested, though graduation ceremonies remain on schedule for June 13 through June 16. At other campuses across Southern California, campus life is marching on as usual, with some students heading home for the summer while others enter the “real world” of interviews and job hunting. Dining options near college campuses usually are focused on convenience and affordability, such as the USC Village development that opened in 2017 with a Trader Joe’s and Starbucks below new student housing. …
