Russian Black Sea Town Plunged Into Environmental Catastrophe After 4th Drone Strike On Oil Complex

Russia’s Tuapse on the Black Sea can’t catch a break as it has been hit by Ukrainian drones for the fourth time within only a month, after a series of devastating attacks in April which unleashed large fires. On Friday another fire broke out at a marine terminal in Tuapse after this latest Ukrainian drone strike, regional emergency officials have confirmed. Over 100 fire-fighting personnel are battling the blaze. Tuapse has already been under a state of emergency for several days, when a Ukrainian drone strike triggered a massive refinery fire, forcing evacuations and spilling oil into coastal waters. 2026 Vantor/NBC via Getty Images That prior fire was only extinguished Thursday, and only 24 hours later the next drone strike hit. The town there has already been facing environmental disaster, with even black rain reported due to the constant thick black smoke hanging high above. Russia’s consumer safety watchdog Rospotrebnadzor warned residents to limit time outdoors, keep windows closed, and wear masks due to elevated benzene levels – a highly toxic carcinogen – following repeated drone attacks. …

As Iran crisis drags on, fears of global food catastrophe grow | US-Israel war on Iran News

In the nearly two months since the start of the Iran war, prices of fuel and fertiliser have surged worldwide. The question now preoccupying economists and policymakers is when – and how hard – the fallout will hit the cost of food. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list Analysts are in broad agreement that the true impact of the conflict has yet to be felt, due to the lag between rising agricultural input costs and higher prices on shelves. They also agree that the severity of the fallout largely hinges on how long disruption to shipping continues in the Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries about one-third of global seaborne fertiliser and one-quarter of seaborne oil. “Food prices will definitely rise in the coming months, making it more difficult for many people around the world to afford adequate and healthy diets,” Matin Qaim, executive director of the Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn in Germany, told Al Jazeera. “Poor people in Africa and Asia will be hurt the most because they have …

AI CEOs Worried About Chernobyl-Style Event Where Their Tech Causes a Horrific Catastrophe

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech The AI industry is no stranger to bad press, from fears over sweeping job losses to a burgeoning mental health crisis, suicide and even murder linked to the tech. But what’s really top of mind for AI tech leaders, according to new reporting by The Economist, is that their tech could soon be implicated in a Chernobyl-style event — referring to the 1986 catastrophe that’s now nearly synonymous with the failings of the nuclear industry. Experts have warned that as the AI industry continues to permeate society, the risks of a horrific and hyper-visible tragedy tainting the entire space are becoming significant. “The Hindenburg disaster destroyed global interest in airships; it was a dead technology from that point on, and a similar moment is a real risk for AI,” Michael Wooldridge, a professor of computer science at Oxford University, told The Guardian last month. The possibility is looming particularly large as AI becomes deeply interwoven in the Trump …

An Avalanche Catastrophe as a Psychological Event

An Avalanche Catastrophe as a Psychological Event

In the past, avalanche tragedies were viewed mainly as natural events, with postmortem analysis focused mainly on physical factors such as snow load, slope angle, and weather conditions. As a result of an influential 2002 paper by avalanche writer Ian McCammon, it is now accepted that multifatality avalanche accidents are social phenomena, with the outcome (human deaths) attributable less to natural forces and more to bad decisions. The recent Castle Peak (California) ski tragedy, in which nine people lost their lives, offers an opportunity to test the validity of McCammon’s theory. The Event and Its Decision Points According to a New York Times interview with two male survivors, there were two parties: an all-female group of eight friends with two guides, and a male group of three strangers, also with two guides. Three of the guides were male, and one was female. The guides for both groups worked for a respected firm: Blackbird Mountain Guides, and the 11 customers paid around $1,500 each for a two-night stay at the Frog Lake ski “huts” (a misnomer, …

Labour MP Labels Keir Starmers By Election Results A Catastrophe

(AP Photo/Jon Super) A Labour MP has hit out at Keir Starmer after the party’s humiliating defeat in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Karl Turner said the result – in which the party came third behind the Greens and Reform UK – was “a catastrophe”. In particular, he blamed the prime minister’s decision to block Manchester mayor Andy Burnham from being Labour’s candidate. The by-election was triggered by the resignation on health grounds of Andrew Gwynne, who won the newly-created seat for Labour with a majority of nearly 13,500 at the 2024 general election. Turner, the MP for Kingston-upon-Hull East, said: “The reality is we’ve ended up with a situation which we could have avoided, that’s just the truth. This was avoidable. But here we are, in Manchester, with the Greens. It’s the worst result the Labour Party could have ever had, frankly. “So here we …

The West’s Winter Has Been a Slow-Moving Catastrophe

The West’s Winter Has Been a Slow-Moving Catastrophe

If you are reading this on the East Coast, congratulations on the warmer weather you’re finally getting this week. It was cold and snowy for a while there. Here in the West, we wish we’d been in your shoes. Spare a thought for the tens of millions of us who live on the other side of the continent, where a catastrophe is unfolding. In Colorado, where I live and grew up, this winter has been especially warm and dry. Last year closed with the warmest December in the history of recordkeeping. It was 8.9 degrees warmer than the average from 1991 to 2020, and the warmest of all in a record that goes back to the late 19th century. Over this past weekend, my neighbors and my family walked with our dogs and our kids in T-shirts and shorts, because it was in the mid-60s in Colorado Springs. About 60 miles north, my family in Denver saw a new record high of 68 degrees—on February 15. But temperatures are not the only reason this winter …

GLP-1s Are an Environmental Catastrophe

GLP-1s Are an Environmental Catastrophe

Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonist drugs have become an enormously popular way to lose weight. And with generic, much cheaper versions of the medications on the horizon, their use could soon grow even further. But apart from being a clinically proven way to shed pounds — at least temporarily — along with a whole constellation of other health benefits, the drugs also turn out to be a major strain on the environment. As detailed in a new paper published in the journal Nature Sustainability, researchers from the University of Melbourne investigated how the process of producing peptides — short chains of amino acids that aren’t just used for GLP-1 agonists, but plenty of other drugs and treatments as well — releases huge amounts of organic solvents and other plastic byproducts that don’t break down on their own in nature. Fortunately, the researchers say they’ve come up with a much more environmentally friendly procedure that could make producing peptide-based treatments far more sustainable in the long-run. So far, they’ve been manufactured using a technique called “solid phase peptide synthesis,” …

Videos of Minneapolis shooting undercut Trump admin claims

On Saturday, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse and U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. There’s a wide gap between what Americans have seen of the shooting and what federal officials are telling them. Soon after the shooting, Department of Homeland Security officials rushed to defend the officers involved, claiming the victim “approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun” and that when federal agents attempted to disarm him, “the suspect violently resisted.” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem defended the Border Patrol agent who shot Pretti, saying in a news conference that the agent fired “defensive” shots after the victim violently brandished a gun. “The officers attempted to disarm this individual, but the armed suspect reacted violently,” Noem said. In a separate press conference, Border Patrol commander-at-large Greg Bovino claimed Pretti may have wanted to do “maximum damage” and “massacre law enforcement.” But videos taken by bystanders, filmed from several different angles, tell a different story. In the first video verified by CNBC, protestors can be heard …
