China World Cup fans cheer for referee Ma Ning

China World Cup fans cheer for referee Ma Ning

Despite the sport’s passionate fan base in China, the men’s national team has struggled to succeed on the world stage. Efforts to strengthen the program, including investments in academies, pitch construction and youth leagues backed by President Xi Jinping, have yet to deliver international results. And despite years of speculation about a Chinese effort to one day host the tournament, Beijing has not yet pursued a formal bid to do so. This year, there’s at least one national hero in the World Cup: referee Ma Ning, known locally as “Card Master” for his strict approach and liberally reaching into his pocket to show cards. In one notable Shanghai derby in 2015, he handed out nine yellow cards and three red cards, becoming a meme on Chinese social media. “Just seeing him stand out there is enough for me,” a Shanghai-based fan, 25-year-old Hu Qiyun, said in a phone interview. “Whether he decides to hand out cards or not is entirely up to him.” Ma, one of 52 referees picked for the World Cup and the …

Gamers Cheer as Microsoft Pulls Copilot AI Out of Xbox Entirely

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech It may finally be starting to dawn on Microsoft that shoving AI in its loyal customers’ faces at all costs might not be the right move. Among gamers, who have watched the AI industry’s run on computer hardware make PC components horrendously unaffordable in a matter of a year or two, AI has turned more into a derogatory slur than a selling point. Microsoft’s Xbox CEO Asha Sharma appears to have taken this new reality to heart, announcing in a Tuesday tweet that the ailing gaming platform would “begin winding down” the company’s Copilot AI chatbot on mobile and “development” on console. The response was rapturous, to say the least, with netizens jokingly crowning her as the new Xbox savior. “Rest in p**s, Copilot,” one user replied. “Everybody likes that,” one Reddit user wrote, referencing a popular video game meme. The overwhelming positive reaction to Sharma’s announcement highlights a massive growing backlash to AI — and how swinging …

The maths quirk that can cheer you up if you’re feeling unpopular

Orlando Gili/Millenium Images Your friends are likely to have more friends than you do. Don’t worry, it’s nothing personal. It’s just about how networks organise. We can represent a friendship group as a network. Draw a node (dot) for each person and a line between two nodes if those two people are friends. By doing this for a group of people who interact in person or online, we can build a representation of friendship connections. This network allows us to explore questions such as the number of degrees of separation. If someone is a friend of your friend, they are connected to you at degree 2. Their friends are at degree 3, and so on. How many links must we follow to get from one person to another? Connections tend to cluster together. Think of a group of friends – people you live near, some of your work colleagues or people who attend your astrophotography club. It’s likely that a lot of these people are friends with each other, so many of your “friends of …
