When Freaks Were Chic: An Oral History of Danceteria

When Freaks Were Chic: An Oral History of Danceteria

Danceteria’s tolerance and topsy-turviness allowed for enormous creativity—but it also allowed for some precarious situations. BRILL: We would do dinners on the roof in the summertime. One night I wanted to get down to the dance floor and the elevators were very slow. I was always in fetish stilettos and rubber skirts that had limited maneuverability, but I saw some people climbing down the fire escape ladder. So I just climbed down [10 stories], went through the window into the club, and then climbed back up to the roof afterwards. Thank God no one was hurt that way. But we were desperate to find a place where we not only belonged but could create and express—and if it came with a little bit of danger, then that was okay. DAVIS: There were two elevators side by side at Danceteria, and [fellow elevator operator] Audrey Roman and I used to stop in between floors and open the trap doors inside of the elevators. We would sit with our legs dangling down the shaft and share a …

Chic and cheerful: 15 hotels for affordable European glamour | Europe holidays

GREECE Toes in the sea on Kastellorizo Just 2km from the Lycian coast, Kastellorizo is much closer to Turkey than mainland Greece. Ferries from the Turkish beach town of Kaş, as well as Rhodes and other Dodecanese neighbours, dock at the island’s tiny harbour, lined with colourful neoclassical houses. One of them, an ochre-painted mansion with pistachio green shutters, is Hotel Mediterraneo, which is so close to the water that you can practically roll out of bed and into the sea from the ground floor suite. Mediterraneo’s owner, Parisian architect Marie Rivalant, is one of many artists and creatives who have fallen for Kastellorizo’s sleepy charms. She took over the quayside pension 25 years ago, painting the seven bedrooms in sunny colours and layering them with rugs, cushions, antiques and artworks (if you like her bohemian style, there is a small shop at the hotel selling her finds). Breakfasts blend influences from her travels too: flaky Turkish börek pastries, Greek yogurt and freshly baked croissants, served on the terrace.Doubles from €170 B&B, mediterraneokastellorizo.com A shipshape …

Soon your face starts to sweat, then your underboob, then your thighs and before you know it, you’re arriving at work looking like you’ve stopped off at the local lido on your route in. Now, the nape of your neck is a matted Niagara Falls. Cooling the head and neck region has been scientifically proven as an effective way to improve physical performance of endurance athletes in the heat, because these areas are more sensitive to temperature than the rest of the body. So, when something cool touches those areas, we can feel more comfortable even if the rest …

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack Del Día Dark: Sustainable and Chic

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack Del Día Dark: Sustainable and Chic

As we get out of the house, the gear-obsessed WIRED Reviews team is writing about our favorite bags and EDCs. Today, reviewer Boutayna Chokrane raves about her love for her Lululemon gym bag. You can also check out other Bag Check stories where WIRED writers share their carryall of choice. There’s a certain type of traveler who has spent years quietly furious at the travel-bag industry. One who has stood at luggage carousels watching identical cases circle endlessly; who has wrenched a shoulder hauling a poorly balanced pack through an airport; who has dug desperately through a seemingly bottomless compartment, searching for a specific charging cable tangled-up cord that looks like spaghetti. Thankfully, Cotopaxi’s Allpa Travel Pack Del Día Dark can help solve most of those problems while stashing an impressive amount. (You’re going to have to untangle your own cords.) It might even take the crown from my previous pick for best bag in the world. Now, it’s been eight long years since WIRED reviewed this bag. We loved it then, but in the …

Forget the Red Carpet: At the Cannes Film Festival 2026, the Stars Are Just as Chic in Casual Looks

Forget the Red Carpet: At the Cannes Film Festival 2026, the Stars Are Just as Chic in Casual Looks

The Cannes Film Festival 2026 is proceeding at full speed, with glamour on every corner. But some of the chicest looks aren’t on the red carpet, the undisputed scene of the glitziest gowns. Instead, take a peek at the sunny streets of the French resort and in the cult celebrity sighting spots for some of the cooler fits in Cannes—or toward the trip to the stars’ favorite hotels. Begin at the Nice airport, where the big stars disembark. Along with the entrance to the main hotels on the Croisette, the French airport has become a veritable catwalk filled with celebrities sporting casual looks. Cascades of sequins or sumptuous long dresses are lovely, but who wants to wear that on a plane? Let’s face it, it’s not just sequins, rustling silks, and lamé that the Cannes Film Festival is made of. Practical jeans, oversize shirts, T-shirts, or sundresses are the foundation of daytime outfits for the festival’s biggest names. When you’re off the clock (or the carpet) why suffer, when less rigorous and constructed looks can …

Jess Cartner-Morley’s May style essentials: summer totes, chic shirts and the best shoes of the year so far | Fashion

May starts with a bang, in fashion. The Met Gala, which happens on the first Monday in May every year, is the most outrageous, most high-concept red carpet of the year. The Met looks don’t offer much in the way of real-life style, but they are a nice reminder that fashion in the summer should be fun. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. Alexia Ioannou Reveals Her Tips for Keeping ‘nou’ and Vintage Shoes Looking Chic for Years to Come

Alexia Ioannou Reveals Her Tips for Keeping ‘nou’ and Vintage Shoes Looking Chic for Years to Come

If the shoe fits, why stop at one pair? Alexia Ioannou certainly doesn’t. The founder of nou built her fashion eye hunting down rare vintage treasures from labels like Valentino, Emilio Pucci, Fendi, Dolce&Gabbana, Dior, Manolo Blahnik, and Chanel before turning that passion into her own footwear line filled with playful prints, bold colors, and vintage-inspired silhouettes. Alexia Ioannou/Instagram “Moving from curation to design was a natural evolution because I noticed a void in the modern market,” Ioannou tells ET. “The industry had stopped taking risks with the bold colors and playful patterns that once defined great design. I wanted to create pieces that captured that vintage aesthetic but were built for modern living.” From animal-print heels to bridal-ready mules, nou shoes are designed to feel special enough to spark conversation, while still being practical enough to wear on repeat. Alexia Ioannou/Instagram “My design process is instinctive, but highly tactical,” she explains.  “I pull from every era, mixing a ’70s fit with ’90s hardware or an unexpected color reference until it feels completely nou.” And according …

Connor Storrie Rocks Chic All-Black Suit

Connor Storrie Rocks Chic All-Black Suit

Connor Storrie has officially made his Met Gala debut. The Heated Rivalry star arrived at fashion’s biggest night sporting an all-black Saint Laurent ensemble, adorned with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Storrie was first spotted leaving the Carlyle Hotel before making his way to the 2026 Met Gala, posing and joking with the gathered crowd. The night’s theme is Costume Art and had a dress code of “fashion is art,” leaving attendees plenty of room for interpretation. Storrie opted for a black suit with a black-and-white polka-dot shirt underneath, leading into a bow at the back of his neck and a train. He took the jacket off to walk the carpet, looking extra chic in the sleeveless ensemble. The actor told Vogue on the carpet that the look was the brain child of his stylist, James Yardley, and YSL’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello. Storrie topped his look off with a large brooch from Tiffany & Co. The 26-year-old actor’s appearance at Monday’s Met Gala was hotly anticipated. Speculation had been brewing online as to whether Storrie …
