Figure skating-Fans of Chock and Bates launch petition questioning ice dance result

MILAN, Feb 12 : Triple world ice dance champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates will leave the Milano Cortina Olympics with silver medals, but also an outpouring of support from fans questioning the judging that denied them gold.  Debate around Wednesday night’s ice dance victory by French duo Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron has sparked a petition on Change.org calling for the International Skating Union to review the scoring. Despite the swirl around them, Chock and Bates said on Thursday they were holding tight to the emotion of their performance and the belief it was the strongest of their career. “We haven’t studied (the scoring) in depth, but we did speak to our coach and we did talk to each other, and we know how we felt on centre ice after we skated,” Bates, 36, said.  “We felt like we delivered our absolute best performance that we could have. It was our Olympic moment. It felt like a winning skate to us, and that’s what we’re going to hold on to.” The petition entitled …

Madison Chock and Evan Bates fall just short of gold in ice dance final

Madison Chock and Evan Bates fall just short of gold in ice dance final

MILAN — One of the ice dance teams who stood on the podium Wednesday night has been a figure skating pair for 15 years, a couple for nine, and married for nearly two. Their chief rivals have been partners for less than a year, with one of the skaters competing for her fourth country internationally. Unfortunately for the former, the latter still won. The United States’ Madison Chock and Evan Bates fell short of their first individual Olympic gold medal on Wednesday, losing in the figure skating ice dance event to the French team of Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry. Follow along for live coverage “We’re still in shock,” Cizeron told reporters after. “We had such a special time on the ice today, and looking back a year ago when we started dreaming of this, it’s pretty incredible what we’ve been through.” The two pairs entered the night in a heated battle for the top spot. After the rhythm dance portion on Monday night, Chock and Bates trailed Beaudry and Cizeron by only 0.46 …

Figure skating-Malinin, Chock and Bates reign at US Figure Skating Championships

Figure skating-Malinin, Chock and Bates reign at US Figure Skating Championships

Jan 10 : Ilia Malinin, ‌a red-hot favourite for gold at next month’s Milano-Cortina Olympics, cruised to a fourth consecutive national title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday, while Madison Chock and Evan Bates captured a record seventh national ice dance crown. Malinin, who separated himself from the field in St. Louis with a remarkable performance in Thursday’s short programme, returned to score 209.78 points in the free skate for a 324.88 total in his final tune-up for the Olympics. The 21-year-old Virginia native has now won every competition he has competed at since the 2023 Grand Prix Final. Malinin ‌said he was playing it a little safer while breaking in his new skates, ‌noting that he usually did it around the nationals. “But these nationals were closer, because of the Olympics. I did not have a lot of time to get comfortable in them. Some days they can be good, some days they can be uncontrollable,” he said. “So, I decided to play it safe here, to save my conditions, conserve my …

2025 was chock full of exciting discoveries in human evolution

2025 was chock full of exciting discoveries in human evolution

This year has brought many revelations about our ancient human relatives WHPics / Alamy This is an extract from Our Human Story, our newsletter about the revolution in archaeology. Sign up to receive it in your inbox every month. If I tried to recap all the new fossils, new methods and new ideas from the study of human evolution in 2025, we’d still be here in 2027. It has been a packed year and I don’t think it’s possible for one person to digest everything that happened, unless that person locked themselves in a room and paid no attention to anything else. That’s especially true in human evolution, because it’s a decentralised field: unlike particle physicists, who often team up en masse to do great big one-off experiments like those at the Large Hadron Collider, palaeoanthropologists are whizzing off in all directions at once. There are two ways this exercise in rounding up the year could go awry: I could bury you under a mountain of studies that you can’t dig your way out of, or …
