Truecaller clashes with India’s telecom regulator over anti-spam rules

Truecaller has opened a public fight with India’s telecom regulator over rules governing caller ID apps, saying the country’s anti-spam framework is making it harder to protect consumers from unwanted calls in its biggest market. On Wednesday, CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala (pictured above) took to X to publicly challenge the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), accusing the watchdog of preventing Truecaller from displaying community-reported spam information for calls from the country’s dedicated 1400 and 1600 number series, a restriction he said had enabled abuse of those numbers and eroded trust in legitimate business calls. The dispute stems from a framework introduced in 2024 under which India’s telecom authorities designated the 1400 and 1600 number series for commercial communications, with businesses using the former for telemarketing calls and the latter for service- and transaction-related calls. TRAI later mandated the migration to the dedicated numbering series, saying the move would help consumers identify legitimate business communications and curb spam and scam calls. The framework was rolled out amid growing concerns over spam and scam calls in India, …

Elephant alert! AI warning systems aim to avoid deadly clashes across India

Elephant alert! AI warning systems aim to avoid deadly clashes across India

India is home to about 60% of the world’s wild Asian elephants, and around 80% of the animals’ habitat lies outside protected areas, according to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. That brings people and wildlife into close contact, and clashes can turn lethal: There have been some 3,000 human casualties in the last five years and over 1,000 elephant deaths since 2014. In places where elephants tend to wander, warnings from ground-based patrols can sometimes take hours to reach populated areas like villages and farms, so they have failed to prevent much of the damage. In response, state forest departments, NGOs, and locals are beginning to design, test, and deploy a range of artificially intelligent systems that can cut response and warning times to minutes—or even seconds.  Source link

Clashes as Oxford Union debating society hosts Tommy Robinson | UK | News

Over a hundred protesters gathered in Oxford to protest against the Oxford Union eve (Image: Getty) Protesters against an event featuring far-right activist Tommy Robinson have clashed with counter-protesters in Oxford. The Oxford Union debating society sparked controversy when it announced it would host a debate entitled The West Is Right To Be Suspicious Of Islam, featuring Robinson – whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. Former actor turned activist, Laurence Fox, was also at the event as well as former Conservative MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was pictured arriving with his wife, Helena, to argue against Mr Yaxley-Lennon. Protesters took to New Inn Hall Street and Cornmarket Street on Wednesday (June 17), occupying either side of St Michael Street where the event was taking place. Chanting slogans such as “Oxford Union, shame, shame”, they far outnumbered the handful of counter-protesters carrying Union flags who gathered in Cornmarket Street in support of Mr Yaxley-Lennon. The two groups were separated by a police cordon, with officers present across the area to monitor the protest. Stephen Yaxley-Lennon has been …

‘Your Party Isn’t Serious’: Reform’s Richard Clashes With GB News Reporter Over Defence

Reform’s deputy leader was left squirming by a GB News journalist over the party’s record on defence. Richard Tice clashed with Christopher Hope, the broadcaster’s political editor, after John Healey’s resignation as defence secretary. Hope said the fact that Reform does not even have a designated defence spokesman showed the party “isn’t serious” about the issue. At one point in the live interview, Tice even claimed that Nigel Farage, the party’s leader, was also its defence spokesman. Hope told him: “You don’t take it seriously … you don’t have a defence spokesman. That says everything about your seriousness as a party. “If you think you are a serious party on defence, who is your spokesman?” A clearly-flustered Tice insisted that “what matters” is Reform’s pledge to boost defence spending. “We’ve shown how you do it, that’s what matters,” he said. “That’s why we’re leading in the polls.” But Hope asked him again: “Can you name your defence spokesman? It’s not an MP, is it? It’s someone else. Who is your defence spokesman?” Tice said: “Listen, …

Senate passes immigration enforcement funding after clashes over ballroom, ‘anti-weaponization’ fund

The Senate voted early Friday morning to pass a $69.5 billion budget reconciliation package to fund immigration enforcement operations through 2029, overcoming the concerns of several Republicans who were upset the bill did not include language barring the Trump administration from creating a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund to pay MAGA allies. The legislation passed 52-47,… Source link
