Astrophysicists know it takes more time than is mathematically possible for one of them to reach its incomprehensible proportions via standard gas accretion. Despite this, they are clearly observable at the center of nearly every large galaxy. So how do they get so big? The likeliest explanation is that supermassive black holes attain their size when two smaller black holes smack into one another during a galactic collision. For years, this theory has remained simply that—a theory. However, evidence from a team at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy now offers the first clear look at a pair of supermassive black holes at the heart of a distant galaxy. As they explain in a study published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the duo is racing towards a head-on collision. SINGAPORE: Tower Transit Singapore has paid tribute to its employee, whose body was found on Mar 30 after a collision between a pleasure craft and a supply vessel near the Southern Islands. The man, identified as Chua Muhammad Syafidi, was reported missing after the Mar 27 incident. In a Facebook post on Sunday (Apr 5), Tower Transit said about 100 staff members gathered to bid farewell to Syafidi. Syafidi had worked at the company for 10 years. “Through dedication and hard work, he rose from vehicle technician to engineering supervisor,” Tower Transit said. “He was a talented and creative engineer who loved to learn and grow.” The bus operator added that Syafidi had just completed a part-time diploma in operations and engineering management, and was looking forward to his graduation ceremony on May 5. Two more people – including a 17-year-old boy – have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died following a collision in Barnsley. Police were called by the ambulance service after a report of a collision between a Volkswagen Touareg and a pedestrian on Rose Tree Avenue in the Cudworth area of the Yorkshire town around 4.55pm on Friday. The pedestrian, a 45-year-old man, died at the scene, South Yorkshire Police said in a statement. His family have been informed and are being supported by officers, the force said. The truck collided with the horse-drawn carriage while travelling in the same direction on the A228 Boyle Way in East Peckham at 6.25pm on Wednesday. A 29-year-old man from Kent who was driving a DAF tipper truck has been arrested and held by police in connection with the incident.
