Saturn’s rings may have formed after a huge collision with Titan

Saturn’s rings may have formed after a huge collision with Titan

Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, with the giant planet behind it in a view from the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft ZUMA Press, Inc./Alamy The story of Saturn, its rings and moons, may have started with its largest moon, Titan. A collision between an early proto-Titan and a smaller object about 400 million years ago could have set into motion the series of events that formed Saturn’s iconic rings and altered both the planet’s wobble and the orbits of its moons. The Saturn system is awash in mysteries. Its rings seem to be younger than expected, the planet’s wobble isn’t tied to the motion of Neptune as simulations have suggested it ought to be, and its small moon Iapetus has a strangely tilted orbit. Titan itself has strangely few craters and an oval, or eccentric, orbit. A huge collision that created the Titan we see today could explain all of these elements. “This is sort of a grand unified theory that covers all of the major problems,” says Matija Ćuk at the SETI Institute in California, who led the …

Russian captain Vladimir Motin jailed for six years after deadly tanker collision | UK News

A Russian ship’s captain has been jailed for six years after his container vessel crashed into a US oil tanker in the North Sea last March, killing one crew member. Vladimir Motin, 59, was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence at the Old Bailey on Monday. The court heard his vessel, the Solong, struck the Stena Immaculate near the Humber Estuary. Both vessels were laden with flammable goods and were engulfed in the resulting blaze. Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, who was working on the Solong’s bow, died instantly in the fire, although his body was never recovered. Prosecution: ‘Exceptionally bad negligence’ During his trial, Motin told jurors he made a “mistake” and pressed the wrong button when he tried to take his ship out of autopilot. He claimed that efforts to restart the steering gear had no effect. But the prosecution said Mr Pernia’s death was the result of “truly, exceptionally bad negligence” and that Motin had lied about what happened, failed to summon help, slow down, sound the alarm or instigate a crash …

“100% Preventable”: FAA Accepts Its Failures Led To Fatal Midair Collision Near Reagan National Airport

Authored by Tom Ozimek via The Epoch Times, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Bryan Bedford said on Feb. 1 that the agency accepts the findings of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) that a series of systemic failures by the FAA led to a January 2025 midair collision, the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster in more than two decades. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an aviation conference in Singapore, Bedford said the FAA did not dispute the NTSB’s conclusions on the collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which killed all 67 people aboard both aircraft. “We don’t disagree with anything that the NTSB has concluded from their investigations,” Bedford said. “Many of the recommendations have already been put into action. Those that haven’t, we’re going to evaluate.” The NTSB revealed the probable cause of the crash on Jan. 27, citing the FAA’s decision to allow a helicopter route to operate close to a runway approach path at Reagan National, along …
