5 things to watch out for at EU’s crisis summit – POLITICO

5 things to watch out for at EU’s crisis summit – POLITICO

“The longer things go on, the less bold any changes to the budget will be,” said an EU diplomat, granted anonymity to speak frankly. “The clock is ticking.” If a leaders reach a deal on that timetable, it would be unusually fast by EU standards. Any breakthrough will depend on how much governments are willing to compromise. Talks on the budget are always tortuous, with wealthier governments in Northern Europe reluctant to pay more into the budget and skeptical about handing the European Commission more powers to impose taxes. Countries in Southern and Eastern Europe, by contrast, tend to back a bigger budget and broadly oppose cuts to farm subsidies and regional funding, traditionally the two biggest sections of the cash pot. To complicate matters further, the EU is due to start repaying €25 billion a year from 2028 on the joint debt it issued to cushion the economic fallout from the Covid pandemic. And there’s increasing pressure to connect the budget to geopolitics, with the Iran war potentially limiting how much the bloc will have …

Sexual violence in the West Bank emerges as tool to intimidate Palestinians | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Ramallah, occupied West Bank – Qusay Abu al-Kabash, 29, continues to suffer physically and psychologically from a sexual assault allegedly perpetrated by a group of settlers who attacked the Bedouin community where he lives in the occupied West Bank’s Jordan Valley. German government slashes growth forecast amid Iran war fallout – POLITICO

Inflation to rebound Rising energy prices will likely push inflation back toward 3 percent this year and next, the government said — prompting financial markets to expect two European Central Bank rate hikes this year. ECB officials say they won’t overreact to what may be a short-lived blip, but have warned that they will raise rates if they see any signs of inflation taking root again, only four years after the last such shock. German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche — whose past employment at energy giant E.ON has made her a target for criticism from the left and environmentalists — was quick to blame factors beyond her control for the latest downgrade. “The recovery that we expected this year will once again be derailed by external geopolitical shocks,” Reiche told a press conference. “The war in Iran is driving energy and commodity prices through the roof. That is hurting households and raising costs for the German economy.” However, German business and independent economists have both accused the government of failing to do what is in …

Psychologist Says The Biggest Relationship Lie On Social Media Is Ruining How Couples Handle Conflict

Psychologist Says The Biggest Relationship Lie On Social Media Is Ruining How Couples Handle Conflict

In a TikTok post discussing insecure attachment theory, Dr. Sarah Hensley introduced herself as a “specialized social psychologist, which is the study of social interaction.” “I have spent my entire adult life studying relationship science,” she explained. “I’ve seen thousands of clients, helping them transform their relationships.” She clarified that the clients she sees are usually on the verge of divorce, or involved in “what they feel is a hopeless situation.” A psychologist says the biggest relationship lie on social media is ruining how couples handle conflict She defined what she sees as ‘the biggest lie in relationship psychology’ According to Dr. Hensley, the ‘If they wanted to, they would,’” phrasing that’s all over social media is “generic pop psychology.” She then went on to clarify why the phrase doesn’t hold water. Dr. Hensley believes that the phrase “if they wanted to, they would” is hugely untrue, due to “a large majority of the population [having] dismissive avoidant attachment.”   She stated that people’s attachment styles are formed in childhood, in relation to caregivers. According to Dr. Hensley, …

Palestine weekly wrap: Coordinated attacks and evictions in Gaza, West Bank | Israel-Palestine conflict News

There was a time when various developments from this past week – such as the Israeli government spending hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting ultra-nationalist marches, a sanctioned settler leading army-escorted livestock raids on a Palestinian village, and the Israeli finance minister calling for the full military occupation and settlement of Gaza while speaking at once-dismantled occupied West Bank settlements – would have been met with outcry or debate in some corners of Israeli society. This week, however, they have become routine, as United Nations experts describe Israeli policy as “ethnically cleansing the West Bank through daily attacks resulting in killing, injury, and harassment of women and children, and the widespread destruction of Palestinian homes, farmland and livelihoods”. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Against that backdrop, this past week brought intense and coordinated settler attacks on villages near Ramallah, continued Israeli strikes on civilians in Gaza, new evictions and demolitions in occupied East Jerusalem, and US-Hamas diplomatic talks in Cairo that showed some glimmers of progress – while falling well short of …

Questions loom over EU commissioner’s romantic relationship with French presidential hopeful – POLITICO

Questions loom over EU commissioner’s romantic relationship with French presidential hopeful – POLITICO

Asked whether the pair got back together after Macron called a snap election in 2024, Attal said: “Yes, we never really lost track of one another … we carried on talking as if we didn’t want the break-up to be total and become a reality. I feel extremely lucky,” he added. But the renewal of their romantic relationship could turn into a potential conflict of interest, given Attal’s national ambitions in France. The former PM, who is a lawmaker and leader of Macron’s Renaissance Party, made no secret of his intention to run in the next presidential election. Attal is kicking off a tour of France and will hold a campaign rally in Paris at the end of May. In an interview with the weekly Le Point, he said he knows “how to preside [over] France” and is working on proposals on health, constitutional reform and labor relations. As a European commissioner, Séjourné swore an oath upon taking office to prioritize the bloc’s interests and be independent of national matters. His term runs beyond 2027 …

War Memes Are Turning Conflict Into Content

War Memes Are Turning Conflict Into Content

As ceasefire announcements between the US and Iran—and separately between Israel and Lebanon—dominated headlines over the past two weeks, they also prompted a look back at how war spread online: through memes. There were jokes about conscription. Captions about getting drafted, but at least with a Bluetooth device. The song “Bazooka” went viral, with users lip-syncing to: “Rest in peace my granny, she got hit by a bazooka.” Military filters followed. So did posts about Americans wanting to be sent to Dubai “to save all the IG models.” Across the Gulf, the tone was different but the instinct was the same. Memes joked that Iran was replying to Israel faster than the person you’re thinking about. Delivery drivers were shown “dodging missiles.” “Eid fits” became hazmat suits and tactical vests. Dark humor is one of the oldest responses to fear, a way of reclaiming control, however briefly, over events that offer none. Variations of that idea appear across psychology and philosophy, including Freud’s relief theory, which frames humor as a release of tension. But social …
