Horror as pet killed by another dog while protecting owner – ‘back legs had gone’ | UK | News

A pet owner has recalled the horror moment her beloved dog was killed by another animal while trying to defend her. Herbie, a three-year-old Cavapoo, tragically died in Padstown, Cornwall last week after a dog escaped out of a garden and killed him. Speaking of her heartbreak owner Kayla Colwill, who sustained bite marks to her hands, called the fatal incident “one of the most traumatic things”. She told CornwallLive that the other dog was “shaking” her “dog round” when he suddenly “dropped” Herbie before launching an atttack on her. It was at this moment she saw Herbie’s “back legs had gone”. She said: “And he came for me and bit me on the hand. And then my dog was like, ‘no way’ and bit the dog on the butt to say ‘no, you’re not going for her’. And yeah, that was just the end of my dog. “He went down fighting for his mum. It was one of the most traumatic things.” The bite marks on Kayla’s hands have now bruised and scabbed, serving …

‘It has been traumatic’: the Cornwall landmark left battered by Storm Goretti | Cornwall

Three months after Storm Goretti battered St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, the signs of the storm’s power are still evident in the scars left by uprooted trees, piles of logs and the shaking of heads from islanders who have lived there for decades and never seen the like. “It really was something,” said Jack Beesley, a senior gardener. “We were shocked the morning after when we saw what had happened. We had been caring for these trees for years and to see so many of them down was very sad. We’ve worked hard to get the place ready for the Easter visitors but it will still be a month or more until we’re back straight.” Once they are sorted, the gardening team will pause to work out what to do next after losing 80% of the Cornish tidal island’s tree cover to the 100mph winds. Replanting trees such as Monterey pines, which had grown to the height of a four-storey building, may not be wise given the threat of more frequent storms because of the …

‘I have the island to myself’: how to be a castaway in Cornwall | Cornwall holidays

It is just after dawn and from a viewpoint on Looe Island, Cornwall, I watch two seals on the beach below. The pair entwine in the surf, her freckled, creamy belly against his, flippers wrapped around each other, eyes closed in blissful bonding. I feel like a peeping Tom, watching from behind a bush. It feels too intimate a moment to be spying upon, but the emerald-eyed cormorants guarding the beach seem unbothered. I had arrived on Looe Island, also known as St George’s Island, off the south coast of Cornwall, the previous morning via the romantically named Night Riviera sleeper train from London, changing early in the morning in Liskeard, then 15 minutes across the waves in a small fishing boat. The island is managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and can only be accessed on organised visits, and while most people come on day trips, I’m staying for a little longer. I have come loaded down with all the food and bedding I will need for my three-night visit, but also with the …

Urgent search for missing elderly skipper after boat washes up in UK seaside town | UK | News

Serious concerns are mounting for the wellbeing of a skipper who has gone missing after debris from his vessel appeared on a Cornish beach. Devon and Cornwall Police have launched a public appeal following the disappearance of David Fretwell. The 75-year-old was reported missing after his vessel, Green Goddess, was discovered washed ashore in the Hayle area on March 6. Three coastguard craft, two RNLI lifeboats and a helicopter were deployed to Mexico Towans beach following the discovery of David’s destroyed vessel with its contents scattered across the shoreline. Local residents started finding fragments of the hull, lifejackets, paint coating tins, gas canisters, personal items and even a seat, positioned upright in the sand. The majority of the wreckage was distributed around the Mexico Towans section of the beach, near the Beachside Holiday Park. At the time, an HM Coastguard spokesperson stated: “A sailing vessel was reported to HM Coastguard at about 8.05am on Friday, March 6, to have broken up on the shoreline at Hayle beach, with no sign of any person on board. …

The Prince of Wales answers the phone to a customer (Image: PA) The Prince of Wales mistakenly called a woman “juicy” as he helped take orders at a local farm shop in Cornwall this afternoon. William, who is also known as the Duke of Cornwall, helped serve customers at Gear Farm Pasty Company, near Helston, and even took an order over the phone. While chatting with the woman and seeking answers to her questions from staff, the prince placed an order for five fresh and 10 frozen pasties. However, he appeared confused by the response she gave when he asked for her name. “Juicy?” he asked, prompting laughter from those gathered inside the shop. Smiling, he said: “Oh, Josie! Sorry Josie, I thought you said juicy, my apologies.” The customer, who wasn’t aware she was speaking to the future king, then attempted to calm his nerves, as William repeated back to her: “The pasties will be juicy, you’re right.” Read more: Princess Kate beams in gorgeous cream outfit as she carries out solo visit Read …
