Russia’s deportation of Ukrainian children a ‘crime against humanity’, says UN inquiry

Russia’s deportation of Ukrainian children a ‘crime against humanity’, says UN inquiry

Moscow’s deportation and forcible transfer of thousands of children from Ukraine to Russia amounts to a crime against humanity, a United Nations team of investigators said Tuesday. The UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine said it had evidence leading it to conclude that “Russian authorities have committed the crimes against humanity of deportation and forcible transfer, as well as of enforced disappearance of children”. The probe was established by the UN Human Rights Council shortly after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The inquiry said Russia had deported or transferred “thousands” of children from occupied areas of Ukraine, of which it had so far confirmed 1,205 cases. Solidarity with Palestinians questioned as Indonesian troops set for Gaza | Gaza News

Indonesia is preparing to send 1,000 soldiers to Gaza within weeks, the first contingent of some 8,000 personnel that Jakarta has pledged to deploy to the Palestinian territory as part of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) under United States President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. Indonesian army spokesperson Brigadier General Donny Pramono told news media the first troops are preparing to reach the enclave by April, and the majority will be on the ground in Gaza by June. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list But as the hasty deployment approaches, some Indonesians are questioning what role their armed forces will play in the mission amid Israel’s genocidal war on the Palestinian territory. Indonesia is a seasoned participant in United Nations-led peacekeeping missions, but critics fear that without oversight by the UN, Indonesian forces could be used as “pawns” by the US – Israel’s foremost ally – to control Palestinians in Gaza and formalise the occupation of the enclave. “We are afraid that Indonesia will be used as the buffer to control the Palestinians,” …

A fragile freedom for Venezuela’s released political prisoners | Human Rights News

A ‘revolving door’ for prisoners? For Armas, the joy of his homecoming has been dulled by the fear of continued persecution. The trouble largely began after he served as an organiser for Venezuela’s opposition during the contested 2024 presidential election. Protesters had denounced the vote as rigged after Maduro’s government failed to provide the official results of the election. The opposition, meanwhile, published evidence suggesting its candidate had won by a considerable margin. That prompted a sweeping government crackdown on dissenters. In December 2024, Armas was arrested. He said he was taken to a house where he was blindfolded, tied to a chair for days and suffocated with a plastic bag. Later, he shared a dingy cell with dozens of other prisoners – and rats. Once he was transferred to El Helicoide, his friends and family had no contact with him for 10 months. His release, however, has not meant freedom. The day he stepped out of prison, he celebrated by joining a motorcycle parade with Juan Pablo Guanipa, a prominent politician who had also …

UN panel says Epstein abuses may constitute ‘crimes against humanity’ | United Nations News

Experts say newly recently released documents show the need for an independent investigation into Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring. Listen to this article | 4 mins info A group of United Nations experts have suggested that abuses carried out by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein could meet the definition of crimes against humanity. On Tuesday, the independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) released a statement in response to the millions of files released by the United States government related to criminal investigations into Epstein. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list They explained that the records tell a story of dehumanisation, racism and corruption. “So grave is the scale, nature, systematic character, and transnational reach of these atrocities against women and girls, that a number of them may reasonably meet the legal threshold of crimes against humanity,” the experts wrote. The UNHRC panel called for an investigation into allegations around Epstein and his associates, who include prominent figures in global politics, business, science and culture. They added that the revelations from the files suggest …

Thousands of Western nationals fought Israel’s war on Gaza: What to know | Explainer News
