Worship attendance at churches up for the first time in decades, according to new report

ATLANTA (RNS) — The past 25 years have been rough for American churches and other houses of worship. The median worship attendance dropped by more than half. Church closures and the rise of the nones — those who claim no religion — have grabbed all the headlines. And faith in institutions like organized religion has plummeted. Yet a new report from the Hartford Institute for Religion Research shows signs of a shift — for the first time in two decades, attendance is up. More people are volunteering, and there also seems to be a renewed sense of optimism among pastors and other clergy. “The headline finding is cautious optimism,” Alison Norton, co-director of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, told reporters at the annual conference of the Religion News Association, meeting in Atlanta. She added that the data showed a story of resilience and recalibration. “Across a range of indicators, there are signs of recovery and, in some cases, renewal,” the study’s authors wrote in a report released Friday (April 24), which surveyed a representative …

The Cal Neva Resort & Casino first opened in 1926 along the northern shore of Lake Tahoe, straddling the border between California and Nevada. Over the decades, it became one of the most iconic destinations in the American West, particularly during its mid-century heyday when it attracted a mix of Hollywood elites and political figures. During the 1960s, the resort thrived under Sinatra’s ownership, hosting stars like Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., along with future president John F. Kennedy. Despite its early relevance, the Cal Neva’s fortunes declined in later years. The resort closed in …

Mandelson was ‘in Russian intelligence crosshairs for decades’ | Politics | News

Mandelson was targeted by Russian states intelligence over a period of decades (Image: Getty) Lord Mandelson spent decades in the crosshairs of Russian state intelligence, The Express understands, with security services allegedly fully aware of his status long before Sir Keir Starmer handed him Britain’s most prized diplomatic posting. Moscow’s interest in Mandelson intensified after he took up the role of European Commissioner for Trade in 2004, sources said, and had been a known concern within the intelligence community for years before his Washington appointment. Despite that, and despite a due diligence process that surfaced his connections to both Russia and China, he was still installed in the role — one that brings its occupant into daily proximity with the most powerful administration on earth. Epstein under the microscope Russian intelligence services are also understood to have kept a close watch on Mandelson’s association with Jeffrey Epstein — the American financier and serial child sex offender who died in a New York jail cell in 2019 awaiting trial on trafficking charges. That relationship ultimately proved …

Christian satellite TV has broadcast evangelical faith – and end-times prophecies – into Iran for decades

Christian satellite TV has broadcast evangelical faith – and end-times prophecies – into Iran for decades

(The Conversation) — When the United States and Israel began striking Iran on Feb. 28, 2026, images of smoke billowing over Iranian cities began to dominate the news. But another feature of those skylines has remained constant: the thousands of satellite dishes that dot Tehran’s rooftops, picking up signals that originate far beyond Iran’s borders – despite attempts to confiscate them. For two decades, Christian television channels produced in the United States and Europe have made their way into Iranian homes. Some of this programming echoes apocalyptic ideas from American figures promoting the war, drawing on scriptural interpretations long present in evangelical teachings. Writer Hal Lindsey popularized such ideas in the 1970s with “The Late Great Planet Earth,” a best-selling book that cast Persia as the foretold antagonist in an imminent end-times conflict that would usher in Jesus’ second coming. In my 2025 book, “Satellite Ministries: The Rise of Christian Television in the Middle East,” I show how these broadcasts became tools for spreading such messages to Christians and potential converts – positioning the region …

Longitudinal study finds procrastination declines with age but still shapes major life outcomes over nearly two decades

Longitudinal study finds procrastination declines with age but still shapes major life outcomes over nearly two decades

An 18-year-long study published in Journal of Personality & Social Psychology finds that people tend to procrastinate less as they move through young adulthood. Research on procrastination has mostly focused on short-term behavior, largely in academic settings and over relatively brief periods. These studies have been useful for identifying what leads people to delay tasks and the immediate consequences for performance and well-being, but they don’t say much about whether procrastination changes across longer stretches of life, or whether it stays fairly constant as people grow older. It is unclear, then, whether procrastination should be understood primarily as a context-dependent behavior or as a more enduring individual difference. Lisa Bäulke and colleagues addressed this gap by examining procrastination across the transition from late adolescence into adulthood. They sought to determine whether procrastination shows both stability and change over time, and how it develops alongside broader personality traits. The study was also motivated by the possibility that major life transitions, particularly the shift from education to the workforce, may shape patterns of procrastination. By following individuals …

The Levi’s 501 Gets Its Biggest Makeover in Decades

The Levi’s 501 Gets Its Biggest Makeover in Decades

Enter the 501 Loose, a genuinely novel riff on the most important silhouette in denim history. What, exactly, makes it different from its predecessors? It’s all in the name—a roomier, looser cut through the seat, thigh, and leg opening. As you might expect, the 501 Loose was heavily inspired by Levi’s own archive, though its substantial 14 oz. denim nods to the brand’s contemporary Japanese-made offerings as well. And though the 501 Loose iterates on the OG 501—and newer silhouettes like the 501 Relaxed—the marketing power Levi’s itself is throwing behind it should tell you just how seriously the company is treating the debut. “The launch of the 501 Loose marks an exceptional moment in the silhouette’s iconic history,” said Janine Chilton-Faust, Global VP of Men’s Design at Levi’s. “We’ve maintained every element that makes a 501 so beloved while offering a more relaxed aesthetic that creates space for a new generation to discover why this jean has remained so culturally relevant.” (As a die-hard baggy denim gal, I, for one, am just as thrilled.) …

People In Their 50s And 60s Who Feel Decades Younger Ignore One Outdated Rule About Aging | Allura Joy

People In Their 50s And 60s Who Feel Decades Younger Ignore One Outdated Rule About Aging | Allura Joy

Maturity can be a good thing, especially when it comes to fine wine, aged cheese, or ripe, delicious fruit. But as a state of mind, maturity can sometimes be prudish and boring. Exactly the reason why Peter Pan never wanted to grow up. To “defy maturity” is to forget about what age you are and how you are supposed to act. Do and say whatever you want (as long as it’s not offensive). Wear stripes and polka-dots together. Laugh out loud in the movie theater, even if you’re the only one. Fly a kite out of your sunroof while driving down the highway. Spend the day at a water park, get wet, dirty, sweaty, and stinky. Have fun. It really doesn’t matter how old you are or what quirky things bring you joy. It is all about the attitude and how you feel when you’re thoroughly enjoying yourself. Science agrees that smiling and laughing are vital for healthy aging, as they give others permission to express joy and share happiness. People in their 50s and …

People are leaving Los Angeles, and it could ‘haunt us for decades’

People are leaving Los Angeles, and it could ‘haunt us for decades’

Long the epicenter of population growth in the United States, Los Angeles is slowly losing its people because of a series of demographic shifts that experts say could have profound implications for the county if trends continue. High housing prices have led a growing number of residents to leave the region for more affordable parts of the country. Immigration — long a pipeline for population growth — has ebbed significantly under a federal crackdown. A rapidly aging population is adding to the concern over how these declines will affect the local economy. “We’ve been depending on immigrants all along to sort of backfill our losses. As people move outward, they’re replaced by newcomers,” said Dowell Myers, a professor of urban planning and demography at USC. “If we had a continued drop in immigration for five years, it would be a major crisis. You can handle one or two years, but as long as the domestic migration is going out, you kind of need to replace those workers with somebody.” New data from the Census Bureau …
