After fighting malware for decades, this cybersecurity veteran is now hacking drones

Mikko Hyppönen is pacing back and forth on the stage, with his trademark dark blonde ponytail resting on an impeccable teal suit. A seasoned speaker, he is trying to make an important point to a room full of fellow hackers and security researchers at one of the industry’s global annual meet-ups. “I often call this ‘cybersecurity Tetris’,” he tells the audience with a serious face, reeling off the rules of the classic video game. When you complete a whole line of bricks, the row vanishes, leaving the rest of the bricks to fall into a new line. “So your successes disappear, while your failures pile up,” he tells the audience during his keynote at Black Hat in Las Vegas in 2025. “The challenge we face as cybersecurity people is that our work is invisible… when you do your job perfectly, the end result is that nothing happens.” Hyppönen’s work, however, has certainly not been invisible. As one of the industry’s longest serving cybersecurity figures, he has spent more than 35 years fighting malware. When he …

Hollywood’s Narrative on UFOs and ETs Reaches Back Many Decades

Hollywood’s Narrative on UFOs and ETs Reaches Back Many Decades

Before zombies shambled about, ghoulishly feasting on the flesh of those too slow to flee, aliens from outer space ruled movie theaters, drive-ins and late Saturday night creature features on television. Even as Hollywood still drives how Americans envision little green men with big eyes and bigger heads, fiction soon could be separated from — or revealed as — fact if government agencies release secret files related to extraterrestrials and UFOs as called for in February by President Donald Trump. The science fiction genre has shaped how people think about intelligent life elsewhere in the universe — “whether it’s invasion narratives or aliens coming to warn us that we’re on the wrong track or aliens just trying to come and make contact and help us with things or just say ‘hi,’” says Duke University professor Priscilla Wald, who teaches a class on science fiction and film. Trump’s announcement on social media followed former President Barack Obama suggesting in a podcast interview that aliens were real. Obama later clarified that he had not seen evidence that …

Why Britain’s most common crime has been poorly investigated for decades | UK News

Fraud has never been a police priority because, as one detective explained, it doesn’t “bang, bleed or shout” like other crimes. It isn’t sexy, is how some cops put it. Fraud is Britain’s most common crime, but it’s been poorly investigated for decades – with only a fraction of cases leading to prosecutions. The government and chief constables are now committed to improving fraud investigation and the service to victims of a crime that continues to rise, with an estimated 4.2 million frauds in the year to September 2025. It’s taken a long time to get here. In 2013, when victim Carolyn Woods was romance scammed out of £850,000 – all her money – and left suicidal by notorious conman Mark Acklom, she was told dismissively to fill in an online form for the official reporting system Action Fraud. Inaction Fraud, she called it. Image: Conman Mark Acklom A subsequent Times undercover investigation of Action Fraud revealed its staff were largely undertrained and uncaring, labelling victims as “morons”. Then, a damning report by Her Majesty’s …

Trump Proposes .5 Trillion In War Spending, ‘Largest In Decades’

Trump Proposes $1.5 Trillion In War Spending, ‘Largest In Decades’

Via The Cradle US President Donald Trump is asking Congress to boost military spending to $1.5 trillion for 2027, the largest such request in decades, while demanding cuts to domestic spending on social programs, AP reported Friday. The White House released details of the desired spending increase on Friday as part of Trump’s 2027 budget proposal. The proposal comes amid the US-Israeli war on Iran, which is costing US taxpayers over $11 billon for each week it continues. US Army/AP image Last month, the Pentagon proposed receiving an additional $200 billion to backfill munitions and supplies used in the war, which has killed 3,527 Iranians, including 1,606 civilians and at least 244 children. While the White House is demanding huge sums for war, Trump’s proposal would reduce non-defense spending by 10 percent, primarily by shifting some responsibility for social programs to state and local governments. “We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care,” Trump said at a private White House event on Wednesday. “It’s not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare – …

Singapore gives green light for pork blood products after almost three decades

Singapore gives green light for pork blood products after almost three decades

SINGAPORE: Lovers of pork blood rejoice, as the delicacy will soon hit the shelves in Singapore after a 27-year absence. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced on Wednesday (Apr 1) that it had approved the import of heat-treated pork blood products from an accredited establishment, the Bangkhla Pig Slaughterhouse in Thailand. The agency said the pig blood products from the company will be allowed for import following food safety assessments.  “Each consignment must be accompanied by an official health certificate issued by the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) for Thailand, certifying that the import complies with Singapore’s animal health and food safety requirements,” SFA said. The agency also reminded traders that pork and pork products can only be imported from SFA-approved sources.  Food manufacturer CP Foods said on Wednesday it will bring pork blood curd to Singapore in “another one to two months”.  “CP Foods has been selling packaged pig blood curd in Thailand for many years. The pig’s blood undergoes high-temperature treatment and pasteurisation, and the packaging is similar to the boxed tofu commonly …

Apple Turns 50 Today: Reflecting on Each Decade’s Biggest Moments

Apple Turns 50 Today: Reflecting on Each Decade’s Biggest Moments

Apple was founded on April 1, 1976, meaning the company is officially 50 years old as of today. To honor the occasion, we have reflected on some of Apple’s biggest moments of each decade, from the 1970s through to the 2020s. Apple has an extensive history, so this list is far from comprehensive, but it captures some of the pivotal events over the company’s first 50 years. 1970s While the Apple-1 was released in 1976, it was the Apple II in 1977 that became the company’s first successful, mass-market computer. Unlike the Apple-1, the Apple II came fully assembled in a plastic case with a keyboard, and Apple sold millions of units of the computer over the years. This product gave Apple sustained cash flow, allowing it to become a major company. 1980s In 1984, Steve Jobs introduced the Macintosh, the world’s first successful mass-marketed computer with a graphical user interface (GUI). The original Macintosh popularized the computer mouse, allowing users to control an on-screen pointer. This point-and-click method of computer navigation was still a …

The world economy is experiencing the most severe oil shock in decades. The worst could still be on the way.

The world economy is experiencing the most severe oil shock in decades. The worst could still be on the way.

Yet even those new highs could quickly be eclipsed if the conflict in the Middle East remains unsettled, analysts say. In other words, current prices still do not reflect the extent of shortages a prolonged conflict portends. “It’s clear to me that if this crisis lasts more than three or four months, it becomes a systemic problem for the world,” Patrick Pouyanné, chief executive officer of the oil giant Total, said at a global energy conference in Houston this month, according to Bloomberg News. The most visible choke point for oil supply from the Persian Gulf continues to be the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transited before Feb. 28. Vessel traffic through the strait remains at a trickle as Iran continues to leverage tight control over the passageway to extract concessions from the U.S. From over 100 vessels per day before the conflict, daily traffic through the strait now totals fewer than five ships, according to data from the International Monetary Fund. The rise of ‘Brotox’: men now face the same pressure that’s dogged women for decades

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore News that Barry Keoghan is “hiding away” due to relentless face trolling about his appearance – and it is making him reconsider his future in acting – is just the latest reminder that the playing field when it comes to beauty standards for men and women is levelling out. Some people might think it’s about time that men are held to the same standards as women when it comes to their looks. I consider it more of an empty victory. Following public scrutiny of Keoghan’s changing facial looks – including new plumped-up lips while sitting in the front row of the Burberry show at London Fashion Week in February, and a noticeably new, defined jawline and fuller cheeks on show at the Peaky Blinders premiere and at the Oscars, both a few weeks ago – he is struggling with the public …

Experience: I’ve spent decades collecting over 260 postboxes | Life and style

Back in 1994, I went to north Wales to see the miniature steam trains – I was a fan of railways. On a platform at Rhyl station, I noticed the painted outline of a postbox – it was all that remained of one that had stood there since the late 1800s. It turns out it had been vandalised, set alight and chucked in a skip. I asked the station manager if I could see it and he jokingly said: “Give me 20 quid and you can take it away with you.” I replied, “I’ll give you 20 quid, if you can give me a receipt for it.” That’s how it all started. Now, I’ve got postboxes from all over the place, which I keep in my postal museum on the Isle of Wight. With 260, it’s one of the biggest collections in this country. I’ve got boxes from East Mey in Scotland, Truro in Cornwall, Cork in Ireland and even one from Hong Kong. I’m not allowed to have a favourite, that would be like having a …
