Everybody’s looking down at their phones, or they’re on their phones. The crosswalk changes, and everybody just starts rushing each way. Nobody’s paying attention except to whatever is in their hand at that moment.” She recalled, “I just had this feeling come over me of feeling like I had just been to Africa, and the problems there felt …

‘I was getting down with a guy and he decided to put on One Love. It was creepy’: Duncan James from Blue’s honest playlist

The song I inexplicably know all the lyrics toCan’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis – the song I sent off on tape as my audition to Blue. The song I do at karaokeI had my 30th birthday party in a karaoke bar above a Chinese restaurant. My mum was doing It’s Raining Men by Geri Halliwell, just as Geri herself walked in, so she grabbed her, brought her on stage, and went: “Sing. It’s your song.” I thought: “Mum. She’s just arrived. Chill out!” The first single I bought I spent a lot of time with my grandparents because my mum was a nurse. My gran said pop music hurt her ears, so I asked my friend Tracy to buy me something from Woolworths that my gran would approve of. She bought Sadeness (Part I) by Enigma, which has Gregorian chanting and a sexual bit where a woman sounds as if she’s having an orgasm. The first song I fell in love with I remember jumping on the sofa, doing twizzles in the air, going mad to …

The State That Decided to Topple a Political Giant

To national audiences, the news that a North Carolina state senator had apparently lost a Republican primary race by two—yes, two—votes seemed like one of those quirky election stories that come around every year, such as when the mayor of Boca Raton, Florida, recently won by five votes. But in North Carolina, where I live, it was an earthquake. State Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger has been the most powerful person in the state for years, through both Republican and Democratic governors. Like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he is the kind of politician whom opponents detest yet begrudgingly recognize for their effectiveness. But Berger appears to have been ousted by Sam Page, the sheriff of Rockingham County, which makes up most of the contested district. With provisional ballots counted, Page’s lead grew to 23 votes out of …

How the Cruz Family Decided to Self-Deport

The Cruz family was exhausted. It was two days before Christmas 2024, and Rachel was coughing from bronchitis, her body once again crashing into the holiday break as she finished her 17th year teaching public high school in New York City. Irvi, her husband, was sleeping after his day shift at an upscale bistro on the Upper West Side, which had followed an overnight shift at a Latin dance club farther uptown, in Inwood. Between the two jobs, he’d dropped their daughters—Sara, 12, and Ana, 10—at their schools for gifted students, then rushed home to the Bronx to cook and do laundry. View More For years, Rachel and Irvi had been hustling to make this routine work, hoping that American immigration policy would evolve and allow Irvi, who had spent half his life in the United States, to become a citizen. Raising two children in New York City was expensive. Each day felt like a marathon they …

OpenAI Flagged a Mass Shooter’s Troubling Conversations With ChatGPT Before the Incident, Decided Not to Warn Police

OpenAI Flagged a Mass Shooter’s Troubling Conversations With ChatGPT Before the Incident, Decided Not to Warn Police

Paige Taylor White / AFP via Getty Images) A grim scoop from the Wall Street Journal: an automated review system at OpenAI flagged disturbing conversations that a future mass shooter was having with the company’s flagship AI ChatGPT — but, despite being urged by employees at the company to warn law enforcement, OpenAI leadership opted not to. The 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar ultimately killed eight people including herself and injured 25 more in British Columbia earlier this month, in a tragedy that shook Canada and the world. What we didn’t know until today is that employees at OpenAI had already been aware of Van Rootselaar for months, and had debated alerting authorities because of the alarming nature of her conversations with ChatGPT. In the conversations with OpenAI’s chatbot, according to sources at the company who spoke to the WSJ, Van Rootselaar “described scenarios involving gun violence.” The sources say they recommended that the company warn authorities local authorities, but that leadership at the company decided against it. An OpenAI spokesperson didn’t dispute those claims, telling …

Is southern Yemen’s next phase being decided on the ground? | Politics

Listen to this article | 5 mins info It is no longer possible to interpret the Yemeni landscape solely through the lens of politics. The developments witnessed in the southern Yemeni governorates under government control in recent months clearly indicate that security and military affairs have become the decisive factor in determining the course of power on the ground. Any governmental or political arrangements will be unsustainable unless the issue of security control and the unification of military command are resolved. Nor can the escalating Saudi–Emirati rift between two allies who have militarily, politically and economically shaped southern Yemen in recent years be overlooked, given its direct impact on the balance of power and stability. Over the past years, a complex security structure has taken shape across the southern governorates, comprising official units and others that emerged during the war. Some of these units are linked to state institutions, while others were established with Emirati support, such as the Southern Transitional Council’s forces, which number in the tens of thousands, or through local arrangements shaped by the …

Ms Pelicot’s newly released memoir, A Hymn to Life, details the harrowing ordeal she suffered after discovering her then-husband drugged then raped her while unconscious, along with dozens of men he had recruited online. In the book, written with journalist Judith Perrignon, the now 73-year-old recalls the moment her “brain shut down” as police told her what Dominique Pelicot and 51 other attackers had done. She also speaks of the intense media coverage surrounding her case, highlighting how she was often described as “dignified” and an “icon”, words she appears to feel ambivalent about – although she feels strongly about offering “my experience as an example and my name as …
