Who decides what AI tells you? Campbell Brown, once Meta’s news chief, has thoughts

Campbell Brown has spent her career chasing accurate information, first as a renowned TV journalist, then as Facebook’s first, and only, dedicated news chief. Now, watching AI reshape how people consume information, she sees history threatening to repeat itself. This time, she’s not waiting for someone else to fix it. Her company, Forum AI — which she discussed recently with TechCrunch’s Tim Fernholz at a StrictlyVC evening in San Francisco — evaluates how foundation models perform on what she calls “high-stakes topics” — geopolitics, mental health, finance, hiring — subjects where “there are no clear yes-or-no answers, where it’s murky and nuanced and complex.” The idea is to find the world’s foremost experts, have them architect benchmarks, then train AI judges to evaluate models at scale. For Forum AI’s geopolitics work, Brown has recruited Niall Ferguson, Fareed Zakaria, former Secretary of State Tony Blinken, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and Anne Neuberger, who led cybersecurity in the Obama administration. The goal is to get AI judges to roughly 90% consensus with those human experts, a …

Ski Jumping-Normal Hill training takes off, Domen Prevc decides to rest

PREDAZZO, Italy, Feb 5 : Ski jumpers tested the slopes as final preparations got under way at Predazzo on the eve of the Winter Games with the sound of machinery filling the air ahead of Friday’s opening ceremony. Floodlights shone from the twin towers atop the stadium’s hills, with one sporting the iconic Olympic rings on the in-run. Slovenia’s gold-medal contender Domen Prevc sat out the first official Normal Hill training session to conserve energy, along with compatriots Anze Lanisek and Timi Zajc. Austria’s Stefan Kraft landed in the top spot in the first round of jumps after soaring 103 metres, while German Felix Hoffmann won the second round and Norway’s Kristoffer Eriksen Sundal was first in the third and final training round. Japan’s Ren Nikaido and Ryoyu Kobayashi fell short of the top five in all three rounds. “The hills were good,” American Tate Franz said of the conditions following his second-round jump. Slovenia’s Nika Prevc and Austrian Lisa Eder traded first and second-place finishes in the three rounds of the women’s first official …

WhatsApp to face fresh scrutiny as EU decides it’s a big online platform – POLITICO

WhatsApp to face fresh scrutiny as EU decides it’s a big online platform – POLITICO

The verdict also lands as countries such as France are actively discussing restrictions on social media platforms for children. The decision focuses particularly on WhatsApp Channels in which admins can broadcast announcements to groups of people in a feed, making it different from the messaging feature. WhatsApp’s private messaging service is explicitly excluded. WhatsApp was aware that the decision was coming as far back as August, when it reported that Channels had approximately 51.7 million users in the EU. That crossed the EU’s threshold for Very Large Online Platforms with over 45 million users in the EU. Meta now has four months to assess and mitigate systemic risks on its platform. Those risks include the spread of illegal content, as well as threats to civic discourse, elections, fundamental rights and health. “WhatsApp Channels continue to grow in Europe and globally. As this expansion continues, we remain committed to evolving our safety and integrity measures in the region, ensuring they align with relevant regulatory expectations and our ongoing responsibility to users,” WhatsApp spokesperson Joshua Breckman said …

US Making Preparations in Case Trump Decides to Reopen Embassy in Caracas, Official Says

WASHINGTON, Jan 5 (Reuters) – The United States is ‌undergoing preparations in case President ‌Donald Trump decides to reopen the U.S. embassy in Venezuela’s capital Caracas, a senior State Department official said on Monday. “As President ‍Trump said, we are making preparations to allow for a reopening should the President make that decision,” the official told Reuters. Trump on Sunday said that the U.S. was thinking about reopening the embassy in Caracas. Bloomberg first reported that the Trump administration is taking early steps to allow for the reopening of the American embassy ‌in Venezuela. The United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a raid early ‌on Saturday and whisked ‍him to New York to face drug-trafficking charges. Trump has asserted that the U.S. will run Venezuela until such time as a “safe, proper and judicious transition” can be made, and he has made no secret of wanting to share in Venezuela’s oil riches. But it was unclear how the U.S. intends to run the country. The U.S. president’s vow on Saturday to “run” post-Maduro …

Boss Notices Employee Wearing Worn Clothes And Decides To Help

An employee felt immense gratitude after his boss noticed that the clothes he wore to work were not in the best condition and decided to lend a helping hand. Posting about the situation to the subreddit “r/MadeMeSmile,” a boss saw that one of his employees kept showing up in the same worn and faded clothing, along with shoes that weren’t in the best condition. Rather than brushing it aside or not saying anything, he decided to actually pay attention. While plenty of bosses might’ve just turned the other cheek, this boss’s actions showed that treating others with kindness can change their lives in the best ways.  A boss noticed an employee wearing ‘worn’ clothes and decided to help him out. In the employee’s Reddit post, he explained that the company’s owner noticed that his shoes were worn and that his jeans had holes. Rather than making a big fuss about it, the boss decided to take his employee on a bit of a shopping spree. “Yesterday the owner of my company noticed that the shoes …
