Nissan recalls batch of new LEAF EVs in Japan over battery defect

Nissan recalls batch of new LEAF EVs in Japan over battery defect

The new LEAF EV is a cornerstone of Nissan’s comeback plan, but it’s already facing a recall in Japan due to a battery defect. Nissan recalls new LEAF EVs in Japan Nissan issued a recall in Japan for the new LEAF on March 27 due to a high-voltage battery issue. In a statement, Nissan said the recall was due to improperly manufactured electrode plates used in the battery cells, which could cause fragments to adhere to the modules. If the battery is repeatedly charged, it can short-circuit, triggering a malfunction warning or, in the worst-case scenario, overheating or even catching fire. Only one fire has been reported, involving a B7 LEAF with the 78 kWh battery owned by a Nissan dealer. However, it’s still under investigation whether the battery caused the fire. US Regulator Closes Defect Petition Covering Over 2 Million Tesla Vehicles

US Regulator Closes Defect Petition Covering Over 2 Million Tesla Vehicles

March 20 (Reuters) – The U.S. auto safety regulator on Friday rejected a petition seeking a sweeping recall of about 2.26 million Tesla vehicles, saying it had found no evidence of a safety-related defect. The decision removes the immediate risk of a large-scale ‌recall for Tesla, but regulatory ‌overhang remains as authorities continue to scrutinize its Full Self-Driving driver-assistance system. A petition in March 2023 alleged Tesla vehicles could increase the risk of pedal misapplication, potentially leading to unintended acceleration due to differences in controls such as one-pedal driving. NHTSA said it found no evidence of a defect or safety risk, citing very few relevant incidents and data showing vehicles responded as intended. Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The petition had called for a recall of all Tesla vehicles produced since 2013 and proposed safeguards such as requiring drivers to apply the brake pedal before stopping. NHTSA said Tesla’s use of regenerative braking, or “one-pedal driving,” is common across electric vehicles and not unique to the company. The agency …

Politics Home Article | Lib Dems Fear Frustrated MPs Could Defect To The Greens

4 min read1 hr There is concern within the Liberal Democrats that some of their MPs could defect to the Greens amid restlessness over the direction of the party. A senior Liberal Democrat MP told PoliticsHome that at least two Lib Dem MPs — both representing traditionally Conservative constituencies in southern England captured during the party’s 2024 surge — could be tempted to switch to Zack Polanski’s party. Ed Davey led the Lib Dems to a record 72 seats at the last general election, which made them the third biggest party in the House of Commons. Their gains came largely at the expense of Tories in so-called ‘blue wall’ parts of the country. Since then, however, there has been growing disquiet within the parliamentary party, with Lib Dem MPs privately questioning the strategic direction and complaining that they have failed to capitalise on the success of 2024. This restlessness has been fuelled by Polanski’s Greens overtaking the Lib Dems in recent polls. Polanski, previously a Lib Dem, has been credited with sharpening the Greens’ message and expanding their appeal beyond …

Five Iran Women Soccer Players Defect In Australia, Trump Urges Immediate Asylum

Five Iran Women Soccer Players Defect In Australia, Trump Urges Immediate Asylum

The ongoing Iran war is a rare modern conflict where warring powers can in an unprecedented manner (generally-speaking in terms of the modern age) address each other directly over social media. For example Iranian top official accounts are busy trying to troll Washington in defiance, even as the US bombs fall. “9 days into Operation Epic Mistake, oil prices have doubled while all commodities are skyrocketing. We know the U.S. is plotting against our oil and nuclear sites in hopes of containing huge inflationary shock. Iran is fully prepared. And we, too, have many surprises in store,” Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X Monday. But President Trump on the same day had his own card to play, highlighting the plight of the Iranian National Women’s Soccer team, which appears stuck in increasingly sensitive and possibly dangerous situation after playing in Australia. Trump wrote: “Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed. Don’t do it, …

Air India flight from Heathrow grounded after ‘possible defect’ with fuel control switch | World News

A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operated by Air India, has been grounded after reports of a “possible defect” with a fuel control switch on the same model of aircraft which crashed in Ahmedabad last June. Air India said it was getting “the pilot’s concerns checked on a priority basis” after the incident reported on the flight – AI132 – from Heathrow to Bengaluru on Monday. It added the airline had previously examined the fuel control switches on its entire Boeing 787 fleet and “had found no issues”. In a statement to Sky News, Boeing said: “We are in contact with Air India and are supporting their review of this matter.” Last June, Air India Flight 171 to Gatwick struck a building shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, killing 260 people. Briton Viswashkumar Ramesh was the only passenger who walked away from the wreckage. According to a preliminary report, published by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in July, switches in the cockpit that controlled fuel were moved to a “CUTOFF” position. Paperwork has been seen by Sky …

Politics Home | Gavin Williamson Says It’s “News To Me” About Claim He Could Defect To Reform

3 min read16 min Senior Conservative MP Gavin Williamson has denied that he is planning to defect to Reform UK. The former Tory whip told PoliticsHome it was “news to him” when asked about Michael Gove’s claim that he would be the next Conservative MP to switch. Gove, a former Conservative cabinet minister, is now editor of The Spectator. He made the claim about Williamson on the magazine’s podcast Quite Right! this week. “The number one suspect for defection at the moment is… Gavin Williamson,” the former MP for Surrey Heath said. “Gavin, the former chief whip, has a fingertip feel for power, and he has a taste for the intriuge, obviously, but an aptitude for putting himself at the heart of events.  “And I think that the temptation to be at the heart of what Reform are doing will prove very great.” He added: “And Gavin, if you’re listening and this is absolutely not true, I can only apologise.” Asked specifically about Gove’s claim, Williamson, who has been the Conservative MP for Stone, Great Wyrley and …

Politics Home | Tory Councillors Say They Are Being Offered Jobs And Seats To Defect To Reform

Nigel Farage has set a May 7 deadline for MPs and councillors to defect to Reform UK (Alamy) 4 min read33 min Conservative councillors nationwide have told PoliticsHome they are being offered senior roles and parliamentary selection to defect to Reform UK in the coming months. Reform leader Nigel Farage recently said that the 7 May local elections would be the deadline for current Tories to switch to his party. Last week, former shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick became the most high-profile politician to defect from the Conservatives to Reform. He joins a list of former senior Tories who are now in Reform, which includes former chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who also defected last week, and former cabinet ministers Nadine Dorries and Jake Berry. Sitting MPs Danny Kruger and Andrew Rosindell have also made the switch. Several others, including Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, have reportedly turned down offers from Farage, according to the Financial Times.  Reform, which won control of 12 councils at last year’s local elections and continues to lead the national …
