Manhunt for Suspect in Fatal Shooting Leads to Delay in Opening Gates at Players Championship

Manhunt for Suspect in Fatal Shooting Leads to Delay in Opening Gates at Players Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A man shot and killed two people in a drug store parking lot near the TPC Sawgrass and then escaped by going onto TPC Sawgrass, leading The Players Championship to delay opening gates as a precaution before the third round Saturday morning, authorities said. St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick said the suspect, whom he identified as Christian Barrios, shot two people multiple times at about 10:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Walgreens in what he called a domestic violence situation. The store is located about a mile from the course. Authorities say he was captured at about 8 a.m. Saturday in Nassau County, the far northeastern county in Florida located an hour north of the TPC Sawgrass. The PGA cited “operational considerations” in deciding not to open the gates until 9 a.m. The first round began on schedule at 8:15 a.m. Hospitality areas were delayed opening until 11 a.m. Hardwick said canine units pursued Barrios onto the TPC Sawgrass after the shooting. He said Barrios, who …

Iraq coach calls for delay to World Cup playoff amid travel shutdown

March 9 : Iraq coach Graham Arnold has called for the team’s inter-confederation World Cup playoff in Mexico later this month to be postponed amidst the travel chaos triggered by the conflict in neighbouring Iran. The Iraqis are concerned they might not be able to get their players and staff over to Mexico for their scheduled clash with either Bolivia or Suriname in Monterrey on March 31 because of the travel lockdown in the Middle East. Arnold said putting together a team solely with players based outside Iraq would hinder the country’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. “It wouldn’t be our best team and we need our best team available for the country’s biggest game in 40 years,” the Australian told the Australian Associated Press from his home in the United Arab Emirates. “The Iraqi people are so passionate about the game of football that it is insane. The fact that they haven’t qualified for 40 years is probably the main reason I took this job. “But …

Allison Robbert/AP hide caption toggle caption Allison Robbert/AP WASHINGTON — Visitors to the U.S. Capitol will now have a visible marker of the siege there on Jan. 6, 2021, and a reminder of the officers who fought and were injured that day. Steps from the Capitol’s West Front and where the worst of the fighting occurred, workers quietly have installed a plaque honoring the officers, three years after it was required by law to be erected. The plaque was placed on the Senate side of the hallway because that chamber voted unanimously in January to install it after House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had delayed putting it up. “On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021,” the plaque says. “Their heroism will never be forgotten.” The Washington Post first reported the installation of the plaque, which was witnessed by a …

Filibustering and Delay Strategies That Block Social Justice

Filibustering and Delay Strategies That Block Social Justice

As a clinical psychologist and academic, I have observed many covert attempts to block social justice efforts within the various systems in which I work. I have been asked to write multiple memos or documents in support of a proposal for a diversity-related policy. I have witnessed leadership attempts to table discussion or add additional votes; one example was an organization’s name change to make it more inclusive of diverse gender groups. Committees inserted procedures and processes not normally required. These additions can stretch out the process of implementation of diversity strategic plans or multicultural programs for years. Unsurprisingly, change agents can become battle-fatigued (Smith, 2004) and give up their efforts. They can also become so disheartened that they leave a group or organization altogether. My colleague named this phenomenon filibustering. Hence, we now use the term “organizational filibustering” to refer to strategies that delay and obstruct efforts to pursue social justice in systems (Mizock and White-Eyes, 2026). We borrow the term filibuster from U.S. politics, which holds several applications to this obstructive process in …

EU Antitrust Review May Delay Paramount-Warner Merger

EU Antitrust Review May Delay Paramount-Warner Merger

Washington appears ready to rubber-stamp David Ellison’s proposed $110 billion merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. But while the deal may (despite a brewing challenge from California) sail through the U.S. it could encounter a slower, more complicated review across the Atlantic — one that is more likely to delay the transaction than derail it outright. Anticipating that scrutiny, Ellison went on a European charm offensive in January, meeting with political leaders and key entertainment figures in France, Germany and the U.K. — including French President Emmanuel Macron — to lobby for the deal and win over regulators who could potentially delay or derail the merger. Once U.S. regulators complete their review, European Union and U.K. antitrust authorities will take their turn examining the historic studio tie-up. Brussels has broad authority to investigate the competitive impact of a Paramount-Warner merger across cinema distribution, cable TV and streaming markets in all 27 member states. This is not simply a studio deal. It is a studio-to-studio merger layered on top of networks and competing subscription streaming …

Murakami Shakes off Traffic Delay Ahead of Cactus League Debut With the White Sox

Murakami Shakes off Traffic Delay Ahead of Cactus League Debut With the White Sox

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Munetaka Murakami was a late arrival for his first spring training game with the Chicago White Sox. Once he got to the ballpark, everything went pretty smoothly. Murakami had two hits and two RBIs in his Cactus League debut on Friday. The Japanese slugger is learning his way around the major leagues after reaching a $34 million, two-year contract with the rebuilding White Sox in December. The 26-year-old Murakami was momentarily removed from the starting lineup after he got caught in some traffic on his way to Sloan Park. But he arrived about 20 minutes before the first pitch and bounced to second base in his first at-bat in the first inning of an 8-1 victory over the Cubs. “There was a big, big accident in the highway,” Murakami said through a translator. “I was just concerned the whole time. … To be really, really honest, I wasn’t able to prepare fully, but I made it in time I think.” Murakami was part of a slate of debuts on the first …

Isle of Man’s Assisted Dying Bill Royal Assent delay would cause democratic crisis – Humanists UK

Isle of Man’s Assisted Dying Bill Royal Assent delay would cause democratic crisis – Humanists UK

The Isle of Man’s Assisted Dying Bill may lead to a democratic crisis, the Assisted Dying Coalition has warned, as Royal Assent has not been given 11 months after the Bill passed its final stage in Tynwald. The Assisted Dying Coalition is calling on the Ministry of Justice not to thwart the democratic will of the Isle of Man, and to resolve all issues and grant Royal Assent as soon as possible. The Bill, introduced by Dr Alex Allinson MHK, passed its final stage in Tynwald on 25 March 2025 and was then submitted for Royal Assent. It will allow mentally competent adults who are terminally ill, with a life expectancy of 12 months or fewer and at least five years’ residency on the Island, to request an assisted death under strict safeguards. Chief Minister Alfred Cannan, who voted against the legislation, told the House of Keys, the parliament’s lower chamber, that the delay stems from queries raised by Westminster’s Ministry of Justice regarding the Bill’s implementation and safeguards. In December, a UK Government minister …

Politics Home Article | Government Abandons Plan To Delay 30 Council Elections

2 min read1 hr Keir Starmer has scrapped plans to postpone dozens of local elections. MPs were told on Monday that elections in 30 local authorities will now go ahead after having been delayed until 2027. The government later confirmed the decision in a statement, with a Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Governmentspokesperson saying it was due to legal advice. “Following legal advice, the government has withdrawn its original decision to postpone 30 local elections in May. “Providing certainty to councils about their local elections is now the most crucial thing and all local elections will now go ahead in May 2026,” they said. The government decided to delay some local elections to create space and time for a planned restructuring of local government. However, in a letter seen by PoliticsHome, government lawyers said: “The secretary of state Steve Reed) has decided to withdraw his decision to postpone the council elections of 30 local councils due to take place in May 2026 in the light of recent legal advice.” Nigel Farage’s Reform UK had …
