Production at Britain’s biggest undeveloped oil and gasfield could be delayed for months after equipment from a rig was accidentally dropped in the North Sea, the Guardian can reveal. Andy Burnham’s new government is under pressure from the fossil fuel industry to allow oil to be retrieved from the Rosebank site despite opposition from climate campaigners and some Labour MPs. Rosebank, located about 80 miles north-west of Shetland, was believed to be ready to generate oil before the end of the year, pending ministerial approval. Adura, the company responsible for Rosebank, now says it anticipates this will happen at some point in 2027. The field is projected to produce 300m barrels of oil over its 25-year lifespan, according to industry estimates. Some MPs believe enhanced domestic production of oil and gas would help tackle the cost of living, a central focus of the new prime minister, by improving energy security amid global instability, while green campaigners believe the impact on the UK economy of exploiting the fields would be minimal. The prospective merger between entertainment giants Paramount and Warner Bros. has been officially delayed, prolonging the drama over what is proving to be an extremely controversial business decision. The Government has set out plans to legally recognise humanist marriages as it released its long-awaited consultation on marriage reform. Humanists UK welcomes the commitment to legally recognise humanist marriages, but urges that humanist couples should not be made to wait any longer for change that is long overdue, and calls on the Government to use its existing powers to act, even in the interim, as it carries out wider marriage reform.  Humanists UK has campaigned for legal recognition of humanist marriages for many decades. In 2020, it supported six humanist couples to legally challenge the Government. The High Court ruled that the failure to legally recognise humanist marriages gives rise to discrimination. In October last year, the Government announced it would at last legislate to legally recognise humanist marriages, but only as part of wholesale marriage reform, including a consultation and the introduction of legislation ‘when parliamentary time allows’. Over the past 24 hours, Royal Mail’s air and road network has operated to schedule. Royal Mail said: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. “In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors. In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. “We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.
