Are designers the new SWEs? Figma Make’s new two-way GitHub integration turns designs into live, production code — with built-in governance

Cloud design software company Figma is officially transforming its AI design assistant, Figma Make, from a prototyping sandbox into a live, visual software editor that connects natively to production codebases. Announced today, the update allows product managers, designers, and non-technical builders to import an existing Git repository directly into the Figma desktop app, visually edit the application’s underlying code via the canvas, and push those changes back to engineering through standard GitHub pull requests. Engineering Governance & Licensing Crucially for enterprise deployments, this integration does not bypass established engineering guardrails. Figma Make operates entirely within a standard version control workflow. The platform acts as a local development environment where design changes accumulate as local commits. When a designer is ready to ship, they generate a branch and open a pull request (PR) directly from Figma Make. From an enterprise governance perspective, this means visual AI edits are subject to the exact same continuous integration pipelines, security checks, and code reviews as any traditional engineering commit. Figma Make remains a proprietary commercial service available to Full …

Topo Designs Rover Trail Pack Is the Best Backpack I’ve Ever Used

Topo Designs Rover Trail Pack Is the Best Backpack I’ve Ever Used

As we get out of the house, the gear-obsessed WIRED Reviews team is writing about our favorite bags and EDCs. Today, reviewer Martin Cizmar raves about his Topo Designs backpack. You can also check out other Bag Check stories where WIRED writers share their carryall of choice. Topo Designs may just make the best bags in the world. The Denver-based gorpcore brand sells gear that looks cool, lasts forever, and has every feature a sensible person desires in a bag without making the product feel overbuilt. If I ever win the lottery, I won’t tell anyone, but there will be signs—like me hauling groceries from Trader Joe’s in two Mountain Gear bags. (I currently use blue polypropylene Ikea bags and shop at Aldi.) In March, I took a spring break trip to Ireland and Scotland with a carry-on-sized roller bag and the Topo Designs Rover Trail pack as my personal item. I am frequently testing new bags, and I didn’t think much about the decision to commit to the Rover for a week. I quickly …

‘Floats above the landscape’: the architect whose designs touch the earth lightly | Architecture

‘Floats above the landscape’: the architect whose designs touch the earth lightly | Architecture

The house teaches you things, Lynne Eastaway says. Today, a choir of cicadas fill the scrub with a rhythm that rises and falls. On other days, there may be visits from birds, goannas, echidnas, wombats, wallabies and kangaroos. “The bush ends, and the house begins,” she says. “You’re not the centre; you’re just part of it. That’s the thing you learn. “Western life has forgotten that we’re not above nature. It can affect us and we can affect it too. Living here has been a wake-up call to living life.” This is the kind of thing that happens when you live in a house designed by the pioneering architect Glenn Murcutt. Eastaway’s house – known usually as the Ball-Eastaway House – on the 10-hectare block of dry sclerophyll forest north-west of Sydney, was built in 1983 at the request of Eastaway and her former partner, the artist Sydney Ball, in the early days of Murcutt’s career. Iris van Herpen’s High-Tech Designs Are On View at the Brooklyn Museum

Iris van Herpen’s High-Tech Designs Are On View at the Brooklyn Museum

In 2010, Iris van Herpen, only three years after establishing her eponymous couture brand, sent the first 3D-printed garment down the runway as part of her “Crystallization” collection. A top evoking the skeletal structure of a snake with its ivory-colored coils of 3D-printed polyamide, the piece was a collaboration with British architect Daniel Widrig. “It was a big moment,” says van Herpen, 41, as she contemplates the look on a form in the Brooklyn Museum galleries. “And it was definitely a starting point for me to collaborate with architects on new techniques.” At the time, 3D printing was mostly the purview of architecture and engineers. Van Herpen was the first designer to utilize the technology for a wearable garment. More than 15 years later, she has continued to push the boundaries of material and technique, collaborating with architects, sculptors, chemists, multidisciplinary artists, bioengineers and astrophysicists. That evolution — and her many inspirations — is the subject of the mid-career retrospective, “Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses,” opening Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum. The show originated in …

15 innovative, wacky airplane seat designs

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Travel season is approaching, which means families and solo adventurers scrounging together funds for a summer getaway. If they plan on flying to their destination, they have a record number of options to choose from. Though the overall basic economy seat price hit its lowest points in history (and at its smallest ever size), airlines have also realized passengers will spend incrementally more to upgrade their experience with added niceties like extra legroom or faster boarding. Those fortunate enough to fly business class are also being served up some of the snazziest new seats on the market.  Regardless of where a passenger sits on a plane, though, maximizing space and comfort is always a major concern. Particularly on longer flights, and airlines and designers have gotten more creative about outside-the-box ways to let more passengers stretch out their legs or travel comfortably-ish with larger parties. Here are a few designs pushing the idea of creating and saving space forwards …

Best Travel Tote Bags for Every Kind of Excursion (2026): Away, Le Pliage, Topo Designs

Best Travel Tote Bags for Every Kind of Excursion (2026): Away, Le Pliage, Topo Designs

Compare Top 6 Travel Totes More Travel Totes I Recommend Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote for $180: This bestseller is the equivalent of a classic white tee: timeless, versatile, and built to be passed down for generations. Inspired by origami, Le Pliage folds down small when you need to pack it, but it’s also roomy enough to double as your personal item. I can fit all the essentials in here—laptop, Kindle, my airport toiletries, snacks, and then some. With its minimalist design and zipper closure for valuables, it’s also the ideal work bag for business trips. My one gripe with this travel tote bag is the lack of internal compartments (besides two impractical flat pockets), but if you’re someone who has little pouches and tech organizers for your gear, you might not miss it. Cincha the Vegan Leather Go-Tote for $130: This vegan leather bag is deceptively huge. The base is 7.5 inches deep, so while it doesn’t look that big in pictures, it holds an astonishing amount of stuff. I’ve packed enough clothes in …

Apple reportedly testing four designs for upcoming smart glasses

Apple reportedly testing four designs for upcoming smart glasses

Apple plans to sell its first smart glasses in 2027, with a possible unveiling at the end of this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman has been reporting steadily on the evolution of the company’s smart glasses strategy, but now he has more details about how they’ll look — he said Apple is testing four designs, and could ultimately launch with some or all of them. Those designs reportedly include a large rectangular frame, a slimmer rectangular frame (similar to the glasses worn by CEO Tim Cook), a larger oval or circular frame, and a smaller oval or circular frame. Apple is also considering different colors including black, ocean blue, and light brown. In some ways, these glasses are a step back from an ambitious plan that once called for Apple to launch a variety of mixed and augmented reality devices — a plan that already stumbled with product delays and the lackluster reception of the Vision Pro. These glasses, meanwhile, sound closer to the Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses. They won’t have any displays, but …

Italian Winemaker Ornellaia Reveals Marina Abramović’s Designs

Italian Winemaker Ornellaia Reveals Marina Abramović’s Designs

Ornellaia, the maker of Super Tuscan wines near the medieval town of Bolgheri, has revealed the designs it has commissioned performance artist Marina Abramović to make for its 2023 vintages. Part of the vintner’s Vendemmia d’Artista project, Abramović has created designs for the standard 750ml bottle, as well as its larger 3L, 6L, and 9L bottles. While the 750 ml have a much larger production, Ornellaia only makes 100 bottles in the 3L size, 10 in the 6L, and one in the 9L. Several of these limited-edition bottles with be auctioned in June at Bonhams, with proceeds benefitting the Guggenheim Museum’s upcoming exhibition “Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now,” opening in June. Related Articles Each size has a different work, with the 750ml and the 3L bottles having self-portrait drawings and the 6L a self-portrait photograph. The 9L bottle, however, provides a more conceptual approach, with the label reading: “Marina Abramović Instructions: Slowly drink wine with eyes closed and listen to the music.” In a video about the collaboration, Abramović, who is currently the subject of …
