Trump administration releases Minnesota detainee after judge threatens to hold acting ICE director in contempt

A man was released from immigration detention in Minnesota, his attorney said Tuesday, after a federal judge threatened to hold the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in contempt for flouting court orders related to the man’s case. On Monday, Chief U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz ordered acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to appear in court this Friday to answer questions in the case of Juan Tobay Robles, who was arrested by federal immigration agents in Minnesota in early January. Tobay Robles’ attorney, Graham Ojala-Barbour, told NBC News on Tuesday afternoon that he had been informed by the U.S. attorney’s office in Minneapolis that his client was released and is in Texas. Ojala-Barbour said he hadn’t directly heard from Tobay Robles since he was freed. His release would mean Lyons won’t be required to testify in a Minneapolis courtroom on Friday, as Schiltz had ordered. Schiltz had said in his order Monday that he needed Lyons to explain why Tobay Robles was not given a bond hearing or released from detention within seven …

“He said ‘I can’t breathe'”: Medical examiner likely to call ICE detainee death a homicide

A medical examiner in El Paso County, Texas, appears ready to call the death of a 55-year-old Cuban detainee in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody a homicide, according to a phone call reviewed by The Washington Post. An employee for the medical examiner told the daughter of Lunas Campos that the office is likely to classify his death at Camp Montana East on Jan. 3 as a homicide, according to a recording of the call. Campos died following a struggle with detention, per a document obtained by The Post.  The employee said the doctor found “the preliminary cause of death as asphyxia due to neck and chest compression,” meaning enough pressure was applied to stop his breathing.   The doctor is waiting for the results of a toxicology report, but believes “that we’re going to be listing the manner of death as homicide,” according to the employee.  Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, said that Campos attempted “to take his life” and “violently resisted” staff.  “During the ensuing struggle, Campos stopped breathing …

Guantanamo Bay detainee to get ‘substantial’ sum from UK government – as Badenoch criticises use of taxpayers’ money | UK News

A Guantanamo Bay detainee will be paid a “substantial” sum as he settles a legal claim against the UK government, his lawyers have said, as Kemi Badenoch said UK taxpayers’ cash was being handed to a “terror suspect”. Abu Zubaydah, 54, has been detained by US authorities since his capture in Pakistan 2002 in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, and in 2006 was sent to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where he has remained ever since. Mr Zubaydah, a Palestinian born in Saudi Arabia, who was accused at the time of being a high-ranking member of al Qaeda, is said to have been tortured by the CIA, including by being waterboarded 83 times in a month, and facing beatings and extreme sleep deprivation. He brought legal action against the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Home Office, as agencies liable for MI6 and MI5, as well as the attorney general. The High Court previously heard Mr Zubaydah claimed he was “arbitrarily detained” at CIA-run “black site” prisons in Thailand, Poland, Morocco, Lithuania and …
