Sheep Detectives Writer Craig Mazin Talks Babe, The Last of Us

Craig Mazin says he knows what you’re thinking: “The Chernobyl and The Last of Us guy wrote a broad comedy mystery about talking farm animals? OK.” Well, Mazin’s comedy roots run deep. Also, we contain multitudes. The Sheep Detectives, Mazin’s adaptation of Leonie Swann’s Three Bags Full, has been a passion project of his for the better part of two decades. And now that results are finally out in theaters — the feature includes an impressive cast on-camera (Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Hong Chau) and voicing sheep (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brett Goldstein, Regina Hall) — he seems a little nostalgic. “I feel like this is the one where I finally figured it out,” he says. During a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter podcast I’m Having an Episode (Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple), Mazin spoke about taking inspiration from Babe, script doctoring, his love of competence porn and why he believes the upcoming third season of The Last of Us will have its viewers reexamining their previous takes on the show.   You wrote the original The Sheep …

Mysteries like THE SHEEP DETECTIVES

When I first saw the film poster for The Sheep Detectives, I was filled with immense joy. I had read Leonie Swan’s Three Bags Full, which is the book the film is based on. But when I mentioned it elsewhere, folks were surprised that such a film (much less a book with a sequel) existed. It made me realize that the premise was a bit…unusual, maybe even bananas for a herd of sheep to solve their shepherd’s murder.  I decided I wanted to find other books involving animals that are a bit screwy…in a good way. Sometimes the premise at the beginning of the book may seem over the top, or the plot goes to truly unexpected places. It may mean an animal narrator who has to solve the case and/or protect their owner. Here’s a list of eight over-the-top books in honor of the movie The Sheep Detectives, out in theaters now. Pony Confidential by Christina Lynch The Sheep Detectives has sheep, so Pony Confidential has a pony, called Pony, as the sleuth. It’s …

‘The Sheep Detectives’ Is the Starry, Family-Friendly Whodunit You Didn’t Know You Needed

‘The Sheep Detectives’ Is the Starry, Family-Friendly Whodunit You Didn’t Know You Needed

Talking animal movies do not, on the whole, have the best reputation. Yes, there is “Babe,” but “Babe” is the exception. Most are pretty bad, whether it’s the uncanny effects, the shoddy storytelling or some horrifying combination of the two. Audiences have earned the right to be skeptical when something like “The Sheep Detectives” comes along — everyone involved was too. And yet this family-friendly “Knives Out” with a murder mystery at the center, a starry ensemble including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson and Nicholas Braun, as well as the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall and Patrick Stewart as yes, talking sheep, has caught more than a few off guard for its quirky humor, its sincerity and its unexpected depth. Chris O’Dowd, who voices Mopple, “the most patient sheep,” noted: “You don’t get a lot of projects that are from the director of ‘Minions’ and the writer of ‘Chernobyl.’ It’s an unusual combination.” In the film, in theaters Friday, Jackman plays George, a kind, but isolated shepherd in the English countryside who reads …

The Sheep Detectives review – This ‘talking sheep solve Hugh Jackman’s murder’ movie is oddly charming

The Sheep Detectives review – This ‘talking sheep solve Hugh Jackman’s murder’ movie is oddly charming

Mazin, it should be pointed out, first got his start in the Scary Movie and Hangover franchises, and is here paired with Minions director Kyle Balda. Yet the Mazin who coaxed sombre performances out of Pedro Pascal and Jared Harris ends up at the wheel far more than you’d expect for a film, well, about detectives who are sheep. There’s an entire meditation on the nature of morality and memory being bleated out by CGI creatures …
