‘Facts of Life’ Star Mindy Cohn Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

Mindy Cohn, best known for her role as Natalie in the 1980s sitcom The Facts of Life, revealed Sunday that she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time. On Instagram, the actress posted a photo of her lying in a hospital bed with the caption: “have been off social media for awhile ‘ cuz i had to go kick cancer’s ass.” In the photo, Cohn is smiling and giving a thumbs-up. In her post, she thanked the staff of Providence Saint John’s Hospital, located in Santa Monica, and her “phenomenal” oncology surgeon, Dr. Anton Bilchik. She also thanked close friends including The Morning Show actress Tara Karsian and The Rookie star Gregory Zarian, along with his husband, John Stewart. They “have been my advocates and always on the ready to help me when it’s ‘my turn’. recouping for another couple of weeks and then ready for my next adventure. onwards! For the first time, the 55-year-old board certified dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon shared what led up to her stroke. In her first year of medical school, Diana Cejas discovered a lump in her neck. She went to the student medical center to have it evaluated and was told that it was likely benign. But the lump kept growing, and she returned to her doctors, who reassured her that it was just a large lymph node. One night, following a 36-hour shift in her residency, the lump hurt so much she couldn’t sleep. The next day, after she begged for help, a doctor finally ordered a CT scan. She looked up her results on the hospital computer system. There, on the screen, was a large mass in her neck. It turned out to be cancerous. Even as she had been learning how to correctly diagnose others, she had not been able to get an accurate diagnosis herself. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012. I was 27, turning 28 a few weeks later at the time, and engaged to be married the following year. One minute I was an excited, expectant bride obsessing over mermaid vs. princess-cut gowns, and the next I was strapped to an IV with steroids pumping through my body to calm the inflammation in my optic nerve. After that, the changes happened almost overnight.  My eye, a victim of optic neuritis, went dark and blind. My body, strong from the steroids but weak once they wore off, became a stranger to me. I’ll never forget that first attack. I was a 16-year-old bookworm planning a healthcare career, with no concept yet of the lifetime’s worth of medical lessons I would learn firsthand — not as a nurse or doctor as I aspired to be, but as a patient. Three days into 11th grade, I stayed home from school. I couldn’t stop vomiting. My mom was worried enough to take me to the emergency room, where I was admitted with possible appendicitis. The medical staff ran a battery of tests that left them mystified.  My mom suggested that I be tested for a rare genetic disease called porphyria, which had taken the life of my grandmother back in the ‘60s.  The doctor asked if my mom had ever been tested for it, and she hadn’t. Therefore, we were told, it was not possible that I had it.  Despite my mom’s insistence, the doctor refused to test for the condition because porphyria is so rare. He was 68. The rapper and DJ died at a hospital in Pennsylvania from complications due to cancer at around 3 a.m. Thursday, sources told TMZ. Bambaataa was known for his impact on the electro genre as well as helping to found the hip-hop collective Universal Zulu Nation. Later in his life, he was accused of sexual abuse and trafficking. Born in 1957 to Jamaican and Barbadian parents, Bambaataa — whose legal name was Lance Taylor — rose to fame in the New York City rap scene and regularly hosted block parties at his home in the Bronx neighborhood.
