How to Fix the Medical Diagnosis Crisis

How to Fix the Medical Diagnosis Crisis

In her first year of medical school, Diana Cejas discovered a lump in her neck. She went to the student medical center to have it evaluated and was told that it was likely benign. But the lump kept growing, and she returned to her doctors, who reassured her that it was just a large lymph node. One night, following a 36-hour shift in her residency, the lump hurt so much she couldn’t sleep. The next day, after she begged for help, a doctor finally ordered a CT scan. She looked up her results on the hospital computer system. There, on the screen, was a large mass in her neck. It turned out to be cancerous. Even as she had been learning how to correctly diagnose others, she had not been able to get an accurate diagnosis herself. Cejas was a victim of what Alexandra Sifferlin, in her new book The Elusive Body: Patients, Doctors, and the Diagnosis Crisis, calls “multiple kinds of diagnostic error—both incorrect and delayed.” These types of errors are surprisingly common; an …

The One Thing My Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis At Age 27 Taught Me About Conflict That Completely Changed My Marriage

The One Thing My Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis At Age 27 Taught Me About Conflict That Completely Changed My Marriage

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012. I was 27, turning 28 a few weeks later at the time, and engaged to be married the following year. One minute I was an excited, expectant bride obsessing over mermaid vs. princess-cut gowns, and the next I was strapped to an IV with steroids pumping through my body to calm the inflammation in my optic nerve. After that, the changes happened almost overnight.  My eye, a victim of optic neuritis, went dark and blind. My body, strong from the steroids but weak once they wore off, became a stranger to me. I suddenly noticed the tremors in my hand and the way my leg would suddenly become numb in the morning.  What my multiple sclerosis diagnosis taught me about conflict completely changed my marriage Rapha Wilde / Unsplash My MS diagnosis meant one thing: I would have to take better care of myself if I wanted to survive. And I did. I started going to yoga to improve my balance. I started taking vitamins (hello, Vitamin D!) …

I Was A Victim Of Medical Gaslighting And The Words ‘You Don’t Look Sick’ Almost Kept Me From The Diagnosis I Needed

I Was A Victim Of Medical Gaslighting And The Words ‘You Don’t Look Sick’ Almost Kept Me From The Diagnosis I Needed

I’ll never forget that first attack. I was a 16-year-old bookworm planning a healthcare career, with no concept yet of the lifetime’s worth of medical lessons I would learn firsthand — not as a nurse or doctor as I aspired to be, but as a patient. Three days into 11th grade, I stayed home from school. I couldn’t stop vomiting. My mom was worried enough to take me to the emergency room, where I was admitted with possible appendicitis. The medical staff ran a battery of tests that left them mystified.  My mom suggested that I be tested for a rare genetic disease called porphyria, which had taken the life of my grandmother back in the ‘60s.  The doctor asked if my mom had ever been tested for it, and she hadn’t. Therefore, we were told, it was not possible that I had it.  Despite my mom’s insistence, the doctor refused to test for the condition because porphyria is so rare. I was a victim of medical gaslighting, and the words ‘you don’t look sick’ …
