Mercury has a 10-mile-thick layer of diamonds under its surface

Mercury has a 10-mile-thick layer of diamonds under its surface

Mercury does not look like a world built for extravagance. It is small, battered, sun-scorched and gray. Yet far below that dark surface, the innermost planet may hold one of the stranger planetary treasures in the solar system: a layer of diamond formed under conditions unlike those on Earth. That possibility emerges from a new analysis of Mercury’s interior, built on data from NASA’s MESSENGER mission and laboratory experiments designed to recreate the planet’s deep past. The work suggests that carbon inside Mercury may not be sitting only in the form of graphite, the soft mineral long tied to the planet’s unusually dark crust. Some of it may have ended up as diamond at the boundary between Mercury’s mantle and core. “We calculate that, given the new estimate of the pressure at the mantle-core boundary, and knowing that Mercury is a carbon-rich planet, the carbon-bearing mineral that would form at the interface between mantle and core is diamond and not graphite,” said Olivier Namur, an associate professor at KU Leuven. The proposed layer is not …

Dustin — who was famous for his role as Samuel “Screech” Powers on the beloved nineties sitcom — died at age 44 in 2021, just weeks after he was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer. In the newest episode of Investigation Discovery’s docuseries Hollywood Demons, Mark joined Dustin’s former co-stars on the show to speak about the financial troubles that Dustin publicly faced in the years before his death. After his decade-long run at Screech came to an end after the Saved by the Bell spinoff, The New Class, finished in 2000, Dustin filed for bankruptcy in 2001. His financial struggles became public in 2006, when Dustin tried to raise $250,000 by selling …

Diamonds are surprisingly elastic when you make them tiny

An artist’s impression of nanodiamonds KATERYNA KON/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/Alamy Diamonds are forever, but if you make them ultrasmall, they can get a little squishy. An experiment with some of the smallest diamonds ever studied has now revealed why they become surprisingly elastic when they are ultrasmall. “Bulk diamonds are widely known for extreme stiffness and hardness. At the nanoscale, things can be different,” says Chongxin Shan at Zhengzhou University in China. He and his colleagues studied how diamonds as small as 4 nanometres across – hundreds of times smaller than some viruses – respond to pressure. The researchers clamped each tiny diamond between two cylinders that were diamond-tipped and capable of compressing the nanodiamond. The cylinders were connected to a force sensor that measured how much the diamond resisted and a special microscope that imaged the compressed diamond. Shan says that making reliable measurements at the nanoscale is challenging because all measured effects are very small and any tiny disturbance from the diamond’s environment can add noise to the data. To avoid this problem, the …

Pure hexagonal diamonds are real and harder than natural diamonds

Pure hexagonal diamonds are real and harder than natural diamonds

Diamonds are famous for their strength, but scientists have long suspected that another form of diamond might be even harder. Evidence of this was gathered over the past sixty years in meteorite fragments, where the mineral lonsdaleite appeared. Lonsdaleite was theorized to have formed due to immense impact pressures on carbon-rich rocks from cosmic impacts. However, the evidence supporting this theory has generally been inconclusive due to its small size and contamination with other carbon forms. Additionally, there has been some skepticism about whether hexagonal diamond exists as an actual mineral. Recent experimental results indicate that lonsdaleite is real and can be manufactured in a pure form. Shoulong Lai and his research team from Henan Key Laboratory of Diamond Materials and Devices created lonsdaleite in the laboratory using extreme temperatures and pressures, allowing them to create a sample large enough to perform chemical and physical characterization. Piano used by John Lennon to write Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds breaks Beatles auction record | Ents & Arts News

The piano John Lennon used to compose some of his most notable songs for The Beatles has set the record for the most expensive piece of memorabilia sold from the band. Lennon used the Broadwood upright piano to write songs such as Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, A Day In The Life, and Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!, which featured on The Beatles’ eighth studio album, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The piano sold for nearly $3.3m (£2.5m) at Christie’s New York auction house after being estimated it would fetch between $400,000 and $600,000, setting the record as the most expensive object from The Beatles to be sold. The Beatles helped transform pop music in the 1960s, with Lennon, who died aged 40 in 1980, Sir Ringo, Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison, …

The Story Behind Queen Máxima’s Most Dazzling Tiara, With 33 Sapphires and Over 600 Diamonds

The Story Behind Queen Máxima’s Most Dazzling Tiara, With 33 Sapphires and Over 600 Diamonds

The tiara is composed of 33 sapphires from Ceylon (today Sri Lanka), of an intense blue, accompanied by more than 600 diamonds and presided over by a large central stone: a sapphire of more than forty carats, which would have been part of a previous jewel of the royal family. The result was a tiara of great height and presence, with floral motifs and mobile elements that allow the stones to vibrate slightly with movement, multiplying their brilliance. It was not a comfortable or discreet piece of jewelry, but neither was it intended to be. Like many royal jewels of the period, the ensemble was conceived to have versatility: some pieces could be disassembled and reused, adapting to different contexts and the needs of each queen. Throughout the 20th century, the tiara underwent a key technical modification. In 1928, it was revised by Van Kempen & Vos. It is believed that the original gold mount was replaced by platinum, a change that made it possible to lighten the weight of the piece without altering its …

Undoubtedly a natural evolution from the boho-chic styles that have been dominating the runways – desert diamonds are inspired by the natural colour palette of sand, honey, khaki and mocha – a sharp departure from the icy brights of perfectly cut jewels. These tones add warmth and are more subtle than the blinding mirror-like clarity of normal diamantes. Marisa Hordern, founder and creative director of Missoma, sees the appeal as part of a broader cultural shift. “Rather than chasing perfection, these stones embrace character,” she explains, “their warmth, inclusions and softer, …
